This semester I just started a German class. So far really liking it and I would like to further my familiarity with the language and I have found that music helps.
So, recommend me some German music!
I already have a lot of Rammstein so anything else of any genre would be great.
Roughly along the same lines as Rammstein, I can suggest Oomph!, Eisbrecher and Megaherz. Oomph! has some older stuff I'm not a big fan of (they've been around since '92 or so), but I really like a lot of their newer stuff from the past few albums. Eisbrecher and Megaherz are fairly similar musically too.

Falco is good if you like 80's music. Rock Me Amadeus is crap compared to his other work (Zuviel Hitze, Jeanny to name two). If you want to learn and increase your understanding as you listen, he would be your best bet. The story in the song Jeanny is actually pretty good.
Die Fantastischen Vier is like the German equivalent of the Beastie Boys. Decent for controlled listening spurts, but not something on my regular playlist.
Wizo is decent, but they play in German, French, and English.
Edit: here is the music video for Jeanny, and was actually pretty original for its time until crime dramas like CSI and Law and Order made this commonplace: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRgR6PJXEZw
I am also taking a German class for the first time this spring and found myself asking the same question. As it turns out, one of the bands I already listen to--Gamma Ray--is from Germany. They sing in English, though, so I'm not sure if that's helpful to you. The only bands/singers I know of who sing in German are already mentioned here.

Das Ich has quite a bit of vocals suited to actual language class listening. Though it tends towards metal/industrial so depends on whether you like that kind of music or not.
Die Toten Hosen play sort of a mix of punk and beer-hall music and have a ton of albums; they sing in German and the vocals are pretty clear, might be good for what you are trying to accomplish.
Ich habe viele musik die ich dir zeigen kann. Ich gebe dir mal ein paar Musiker usw. gibst du mir deine lieblingsmusik dann kann ich dir was gute empfehlen.
falls du nicht verstanden hast (ive got some music that i can i show you, ill give you a bit of what i got. if you tell me what you like to listen to, then i can go into greater detail)
Beispiele:
Clueso, Fettes Brot, Die Fantastischen Vier, Wir Sind Helden, Die Aerzte, Modeselektor, Lali Puna, The Notwist, and last but not least, BUSHIDO (do you like the DDR and guns?)
(watch out, a lot of germans dont sing in german. till recently it was seen as strange or weird to sing in german. eventually music scenes from hamburg and berlin started thier own shit and that started to change. though on the whole german rap is kind of funny.)

Dangit, that's my line. May favorites are Seele Tanzt and Destillat, for what it's worth. Well, then, try Oomph!, which is more regular metal than industrial. Laibach is great, too, if you liked Rammstein - Ramm pretty much apes Laibach's more metal sounding stuff, but they do a lot of electronic too.

Megaherz is also pretty good. You can hear them if you Youtube (at work and filter wont let me go there) Naruto - Whispers of the Beast. They are the first song in the video. The track is called 5.marz I believe. Really good video and great song.
Yage! Their last/best album "Anders Leben" actually alternates each song with English and German lyrics, so only half of them are in German.
Louise Cyphre. Really chaotic stuff. Not even sure if the lyrics are intelligible through the screamy vocals, but they're a pretty good punk/hardcore band.
im telling you man, listen to clueso, he might be hard to find but i can send you a song or two over the internet, really smooth rap, with sweet beats and he's not just talking out of his ass
Mey writes both sensitive and humorous songs, with subject matter taken mostly from his everyday life and surroundings. His themes include life on the road, his hobbies (e.g., flying), childhood memories, his family life and surroundings, and occasionally politics. Many of his songs are humorous and demonstrate Mey's extraordinary linguistic versatility. Mey's songs are characterized most by their expressiveness of language and their penetrating melodies.
Just stay the hell away from any Schlager music, it'll make you want to drop your German classes.
How about that song '99 Luftballons' by Nena? There is a German version and an English version that are pretty easy to find.
I was going to suggest that, but as a joke. It does lose a lot in translation, though. The original German was an anti-war song but the translation was just non-sensical.

Die Ärzte are always great. You definitely have to check their music out.
back when I was in German (in high school, so 5+ years ago), I remember really liking a song called MFG by die fantatischen vier... it's rap but it's still pretty awesome
we also listened to a lot of die Prinzen in class... they're ok, generally inoffensive with clear lyrics, hence listening to them in class a fair bit.
also rubber ducky techno german remix, if you can find it. Mostly because it's hilarious

You might also want to listen to Herbert Grönemeyer, although even most Germans don't actually understand what he's singing.
Die Toten Hosen - I'm not their biggest fan, but I really like this song.
Yes, yes and yes.
Do you as an Austrian remember any rap group called "Blumentopf" or something like that? I went to a Bloodhoundgang concert like a million years ago and some Austrian duders were the pre-main act. I thought they were pretty good, but I smoked so much dope that night that I took a nap in the mosh pit.

Wolfsheim - synthpop band http://www.wolfsheim.de/
Falco - You may remember from Rock Me Amadeus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVEY_JpxkXE
Obviously, the more international the band, the more songs they tend to do in english rather than german.

Einstürzende Neubauten for some...uh, whatever it is they do. I haven't listened to them for a long time, but I did like the album Halber Mensch.
My Backloggery
Still a good German band though if you like electronic music.

for the love of god, please do not listen to rammstein.

Electronic composer for hire.
Louise Cyphre. Really chaotic stuff. Not even sure if the lyrics are intelligible through the screamy vocals, but they're a pretty good punk/hardcore band.
Also: Is there such a thing as "mellow" German music? I notice I have a lot of metal and electronic stuff (which is not bad by any means)
Just curious.
Keep 'em coming.
Die Toten Hosen. (punk)
The WiseGuys (hilarious)
Try Reinhard Mey, not sure if I'd call him a folk singer but I can't think of any better word for his music. He's pretty funny, too.
Just stay the hell away from any Schlager music, it'll make you want to drop your German classes.
Wir Sind Helden might be cool still.
What? How can you call Wumpscut trash and then recommend KMFDM?
How about that song '99 Luftballons' by Nena? There is a German version and an English version that are pretty easy to find.
Edit: Oops! Looks like the lyrics are different from German to English: http://www.inthe80s.com/redger3.shtml
I was going to suggest that, but as a joke. It does lose a lot in translation, though. The original German was an anti-war song but the translation was just non-sensical.
Then there's Sportfreunde Stiller - fun, catchy music.
Like already suggested above, Flaco. It's the 10th year anniversary of his death too.
You might also want to listen to Herbert Grönemeyer, although even most Germans don't actually understand what he's singing.
Die Toten Hosen - I'm not their biggest fan, but I really like this song.
Rammstein - well, what can I say, they're hit and miss, but they did some great music too.
we also listened to a lot of die Prinzen in class... they're ok, generally inoffensive with clear lyrics, hence listening to them in class a fair bit.
