I just installed ubuntu on my desktop pc, and so far I'm loving it. It's not playing nice with my d-link wireless usb dongle thingy though, so I'm going to get a wireless bridge. I've been hearing about people buying some sort of linksys wireless router and using third party firmware to make it act as a bridge. Can anyone confirm or deny? Details?

Confirmed.
If you choose a Linksys router you'll probably want to go with a WRT54GL. I don't use a Linksys router, but you can use either Tomato or DD-WRT to configure the router was a wireless ethernet bridge. I run Tomato on my router, but I don't use it as a wireless ethernet bridge.
That said, it looks rather straightforward to configure it that way. Here is a screenshot of the page that you use to change it to a bridge.
