Sounds like the transmission. How many miles are on it?

Like 170k. The transmission is relatively new though. We just put a new one in a few years ago. That would suck.

Did it sound like a bunch of rocks in a coffee can? Or like a loud ticking?

More of a loud ticking. But not like...in intervals or anything. The sound was totally random, and I'd say pretty fast. Like something rattling around inside something else. Wasn't really a metallic sound.

If the engine was revving up but not moving you anywhere, I'd say transmission also.

It only did that for literally a couple seconds before the engine just cut out. I don't know.

Timing belt? My escort did something similar when it lost it.

Otherwise I'd say the clutch just went, but usually it wouldn't kill the engine like that.

Unfortunately if it's the timing belt the engine might be fucked. >.>

Pfft. You still playing LOTRO? I quit that shit. Anywho, thanks for the advice. Doesn't seem like anyone has the answer, so I'll just wait to see what my dad has to say. He's been a mechanic for like 35 years and if anyone can figure the shit out, he can.
