Patapon is the best purchase for the PSP - borrow one to play the demo! $19.99?!! :O
Presented in a cartoonish, high-contrast silhouette two-dimensional environment, the player, as an immaterial deity, controls an army of caricature tribal miniature creatures by beating traditional talking drums to create a rhythm, much like a drum could be used to keep a human army marching as a single entity, or to scare an enemy.
I've owned a PSP since 2005. In that time, I've had a lot of fun games -- Lumines, Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow, etc. -- but in my opinion, Patapon is the greatest game this system has ever seen. There's a stunning art style, there's a super-deep equipment customization option for troops, the beats are catchy, there's a trumpet mini-game, the characters are cute, and there's such a tremendous feeling of accomplishment when you march through a level in Fever and wipe the floor with a boss larger than all of your forces combined.
For the past week, I've been coming to work, ranting about this game and watching the clock for when I can go home and play. The Patapons dance in my head and their beat rings in my ears. When I have this game in my hands and am watching the tribe march forward to hurl spears, I am truly happy.
Buy this game.
I totally agree with this dude.
Demo came out yesterday and this game has mad wicked hooks.
Demo also has an exclusive weapon that you can bring to the full game as it lets you save your data after the end and you can continue from that point.
I never got a good chaka defense going against the dragon guy at the end though. do they stop the flames short of hitting anyone?
I think they do a little protection. I noticed some shield going up when I did it and they got hit. But that dragon pretty much wipesd everyone I had except the flag guy and two archers. I just barely got him.
The demo was pretty damn great. I made sure that all my bow/spear/melee guys were either the yellow or the purple kind of eyeball before I made a save.
Well, looks like I'll have to dust off the 'ol PC and download the demo. I can finally chuck the thing for another period of tiem when Sony makes a Mac PSP store.
Oh, wait, nevermind. I'm still waiting for my invisible shield to come in for my PSP because I make even more scratches in the friggin' screen.
Yeah, this game looks really cool. Reviewed well in Edge. I might buy it for my sister so I can play it when she comes back to the UK during the holidays. The psp seems to be quietly building up a really interesting library of alternative and inventive games.

I pre-ordered this game last week and just paid for it outright. $27 Canadabucks.
And I just finished the demo.
This is the greatest game evar.

Garry: I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time I'd rather not spend the rest of the winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!
I downloaded the demo when it first came out but only just got around to playing it last night since DMC4 and Everyday Shooter was taking up all my time. I was expecting it to be awesome, since I've been waiting for it for a while but man, this game kicks ass.
The only thing I'm worried about is forgetting drum beats. My memories pretty horrible so I might have to get a notebook out and make some notes...
My Gamestop was a real sport about me ordering online, and gave me a demo disk anyway. Awesome demo! As it's a game involving keeping a beat and remembering button combos, I figured I would suck at it. However, I was able to pick it up pretty quick and get the little guys to do what I want without much problem. Was I doing something wrong, or is name entry limited to only four letters? I want to be on a first name basis with my worshipers.

I have played the demo around 6 times. It's ridiculously fun. I can Fever with a certain familiarity, and hunting, well, I've committed genocide on Mottis and Kacheeks. My current save has over 30 meats of Cafeteria status, and 12-15 of the Tender status. I have the Tatepons and the Yuripons squads maxed. I have unique Yumipon and Yuripon. I have the steel bow, iron bow, 3 iron spears, 1 steel spear, 1 steel axe, 1 steel sword, and 1 iron sword. 1 Iron hat.
ive been playing through the game and trying to get meat to create new patapons but the damned squeegee elephants keep running away >.<
Do NOT bring Tatepons. They have a low damage output, and they tend to scare animals away. The Yuripons (Spear dudes) are CRAZY awesome at it. The Yumipons are great too if you can get to fever and stay there. They fire 3 arrows per attack in fever mode.

just tried it without them and got some meat finally!
Also i was having trouble maintaining fever mode but noticed that if you look at the edge of the screen it flashes at the proper beat. I used it as my guide and it was a cinch in fever mode! Thanks!
It really looks like an awesome game. Too bad i totally suck at timing based games I'll probably just buy it to have it, and then go back to jeanne D'arc
I can't download it, for some reason it tries to download some .xpd file instead. I've tried three different browsers and it's that same thing which each one. Gah, this pisses me off.

Gotta use the Playstation store download tool to use the XPD. Should be a FAQ or help near the download.
Yeah, holy hell is this a fun little game. There's just 2 problems I can see.
1: I hope they're not hiding something like 10 more drum patterns in. They had the right idea making them simple and easy to remember, but there were a few times where I screwed up the attack beat. Keep them short, keep them simple, keep them happy.
2: For what amounts to a rhythm game, it's surprisingly tricky to keep a beat. I would say half the time I hit Fever, I would fuck up because their "Fee-vaaah" yell screws up the beat, making me start all over.
Other than that, holy crap, 20 bucks even in Canadia means it's bought. I'm actually dying to flip through the manual. I need to know what the hell these CNC and KB stats are between the different colour variations you can make.

I won my PSP in a raffle months ago and to date the only game I've bought is Gunpey. Now it looks like I'll have to grab Patapon and even LocoRoco looks like a lot of fun.
So this game is pretty damn fun. Farming and making a stronger army gets really addicting. Although it seems I'm in the minority that I hope the actual game is a little more complicated that the demo. If those are the 3 main drum beats (and assuming a 4th) you use throughout the game, I personally think that's gonna get a little boring/repetitive (yeah I know there's some other stuff later). Two or three more (like an increased charge or increased defense that takes 2 chants to start) would switch things up nicely I think. I also hope some alternate strategies are needed in later boss fights, although what I've seen so far indicates that size and strength of your army is the real deciding factor.
While the $20 price tag makes it an instant buy, it also worries me: the Sony guys were saying it's because they want to get it to a potentially wider audience, but I sense that maybe it's really short or has some other reason a full $40 price tag would have produced some backlash review-wise. Also, censorship makes me a sad panda; in one of the trailers I watched the tree says "Listen to my song God DAMMIT."
Wow that really sucks. Good thing the PSP is region free.
The patapon demo is intoxicating. I played through it once normally but I didn't realize you could make super patapons by sacrificing different ingredients to the tree. I'm addicted now, and this is definitely bought'd.

This looks fantastic, how is it played?
The PSP is looking more and more awesome all the time, I might actually give my DS a black companion if you know what I mean.

You have an army of patapons comprised of 3 squads, each squad containing up to 6 of a certain type (archer, spearman, fighter, etc..)
You issue order to your patapons by "drumming" out certain rhythms, for example, advance is "square square square circle" (or pata pata pata pon), and attack is "circle circle square circle" (pon pon pata pon). Eventually you get drums for all four face buttons and a larger variety of war songs such as defense and retreat, as well as 'miracle' spells that you can bust out. If you don't miss any beats and chain up enough orders eventually your patapons go into a chirping, whirling fever of death where they start singing and whipping out special attacks as the background music ramps up as well. It's quite exciting.
The game is organized into small maps that take a few minutes to advance through, and you pick up money and spoils along the way. After you finish the map you return back to "Pataponia" and you can play minigames to earn more loot, talk to your patapons, create new patapons by sacraficing odds and ends you find, and probably more that isn't in the demo.

Need more exclamation points here.
Both threads are good actually. Maybe a merge can happen, but whichever wins must have lots of bold text and yelling.

Man, I dumb.
I had a lot of trouble with this too. You need to have your PSP hooked up and in USB connection mode when you click on the xpd file as well.

Patapon AU$59.95
I heartily recommend that all AU gamers import a copy (via ebay and such) and avoid getting reamed on something that was supposed to be budget priced.
Last I checked the $AU was dancing around the US90c mark, so at the most this game should have cost AU$30, but instead its double.
