Situation is this. These days I'm mainly console gamer, but I really do have soft spot for PC-gaming too. Unfortunately, I'm pretty much out of the loop, and I have missed many great titles during last seven years. I have decided to go for shopping spree, and purchase so many good PC-games as possible. My current budget is 300 euros, and I'm going to do most of my purchases from Play.com*, as they have real low prices especially when it comes to compilations.
And now, I'm asking help from you, dear Penny-Arcaders. Could you give pointers on what I should buy? I like all kinds of games, and, and basically everything goes from platformers to superheavy flight sims. However, I'm really, really picky when it comes to FPS games and I except Deus Ex like quality** from these.
* Of course, if you know better places, just suggest, but remember that I live in Finland ** read: superfuckingfantastic quality that make Earth explode

Definitely get Freespace 1 & 2. Best space sims ever made (and yes, I mean better than TIE Fighter). The developer released the source code to the public when they were bought by THQ (while Interplay still had the license), so you should just be able to download it. I won't post any links though (still not sure what the mods think of the open source projects with FS2, as far as legality goes). Gogo Google.

I think FS2 is actually posted in the indie game thread (or at least was).
OP:
Everyone and their brother will suggest it, but: Orange Box. Even without playing HL1, HL2 is an awesome experience, and I cannot even begin to describe how awesome Portal is. The only real drawback to OB is that HL2, EP1, EP2, and Portal are not the longest games ever. There's a quite a bit of replay value though, especially if you like the series to begin with.
The Total War series also has some gems. Rome is a fun game, and I've heard great things about Medieval II, assuming you can get the game running.
Finally: Oblivion. I have it for the 360 because I don't have a good enough PC for it, but in my heart I wish I had it for PC just for the modding.
Anyone notice how some things (mattresses and the copy machines in Highrise) are totally impenetrable? A steel wall, yeah that makes sense, but bullets should obliterate copy machines.
I don't know about you, but I always buy a bullet proof printer. Its a lot more expensive, but I think the advantages are apparent.
I have played Deus Ex. But is Total War: Eras worth of your money*? I can get one for 20 euros, but I'm not so sure how well the older games have aged.
* It has first three games (Shogun, Rome and Medieval) together with their respective expansions.
Orange Box, yes. Oblivion and its expansions, yes. If you like puzzle games and RPGs, then you need to play Puzzle Quest.
From your second Play link, the 3 for 10 deal... many of those are darn old. But depending on whether you like the genres, consider: Dungeon Siege (Diablo-like), MechWarrior 4 (2 different items listed there), Homeworld, Sacred Gold if you really like old-school Diablo, Thief 1 and 2 are classics, Total Annihilation pack perhaps.
I see Play has a special on the Hitman series, those are pretty good too. If you like D&D RPGs, go for the NWN series, and the old-school Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dales, too. And Planescape: Torment.

Empire at War is coming out soon, and I'd say with a machine like that you'd be better off with Medieval Total War 2. The new DoW expansion is similarly almost out which might be a better bet than playing the older campaigns. Either of the new Tomb Raider games are worth picking up if you want some platforming action and I found World in Conflict to be a really impressive new take on RTS.
As for Deus Ex quality FPS games, Stalker is probably the closeest you're going to get and it's only $19.99 on steam.
for jokes you should try Crysis, but heck if it does somehow barely work like it did on mine. you have a fantastic FPS to play.

I'll have to draw your attention to number 75, Masq. It's a freeware, interactive story that's really amazing. I made a thread about it a while back and it seemed to be a big hit around here, but search is down so I can't link it.

I'd say the older games have aged pretty well. They are uglier, but it doesn't really matter in this kind of game. Medieval is fantastic, Rome is decent and Shogun was pretty nice except that my version was broken and crashed on me.

Before you buy ANYTHING, check Steam. It often has good deals (and often it doesn't).
Thanks for the list. It is worth noticing that I usually try to avoid download services if game is reasonably easy to acquire as a hardcopy, but I'm more than happy to pay for content that wouldn't otherwise see light of day. One good example could be Napoleon's Ambition for Europa Universalis III. Original game itself is so niche that printing mission disk wasn't commercially viable option.
You limed Jade Empire? I was pretty excited about it, but then it faded into obscurity and I never really heard anything about it. Is it any good?
JE is fun. I enjoyed the combat system(it's horribly unbalanced, like any other Bioware game, but meh) although the story was LOTS cheesy and the good/evil morality choice at the end is basically 'You're a hero doing the right thing,' or 'YOU ARE SO EVIL SO VERY EVIL SO DAMN EVIL IT BLOWS MY MIND,' which is irritating.
I haven't seen Homeworld recommended here. It's the most bestest RTS ever.
FEAR is fantastic singleplayer, as well as having awesome, amazing, solid, FREE multiplayer(FEAR Combat)
Also, you really need to play Chronicles of Riddick (as Tycho pointed out, along with every other good PC game ever made). Not enough people have played that game.
To add, Grim Fandango (yes, Tycho posted it, too) is quite old, but is a favorite game/top 10 for many.
His computer looks very similar in specs to mine (except I have an 8800GTS 512) and mine runs Crysis smoothly on almost entirely Very High.
The boogeyman of "Crysis will melt your computer" is quickly becoming unfounded.
Indeed. I was curious so I downloaded the single player demo. According to FRAPS, framerate stayed constantly at 60 frames per second. Resolution was 1024 x 768, all graphical settings were set to medium, and AA was set off. Overall, I was pretty happy with the performance.
I can't believe I left Homeworld (and Homeworld 2) off the list. Get those also. And yes, Crysis is amazing. I didn't lime it because I didn't know how your computer would handle it, but it's one of my favorite first person shooters in a year containing the Orange Box, Bioshock, and CoD4.

Thanks everyone who has given suggestions. I have now compiled list of various games I'm currently interested on, and lowest price I could find on them. If you would have 300 euros, what games you would pick from this list?

If you're going to buy a HoMM game, go with III instead of V - it's generally considered to be the best in the series. Same is true for MoO2.
And NWN2, I just buyed the game yesterday myself, but I can't get this fucker running on my computer. :x

It is that buggy?
I believe it was really buggy at release, but from what I heard Obsidian did a good job patching the game since then. Still doesn't work for me, though.
Ground Control is free. Far Cry is like Crysis but worse. You'll want No One Lives Forever 2 after finishing the first one, and Mask of the Betrayer for NWN2. I'm not so sure that the first 2 Age of Empires games are worth it. I can't remember which Hitman games are the good ones but it might not be the first 3. Silent Storm is on there twice also. Looks good otherwise. KOTOR2 will be a worthwhile purchase when Team Gizka finishes, btw.

There was a large thread dedicated to the FS2 SCP with a direct link to the downloader a week or two ago.
Well, after browsing various finnish online stores, I found better prices on few games, like Galactic Civilizations 2. After fiddling and pondering for a while, I have decided to pick following titles:
I decided to skip Bioshock, Crysis, Orange Box and World in Conflict, and wait until they come down in price little bit. But how does my list sound now?

If you're going to play NWN2, you really need to get the expansion (Mask of the Betrayer). Just like with NWN1, the expansion (plural for NWN1) add a lot to the base game even on the first run-through.

This is the PCGamer top 100 list (1-50 can be found here and 51-100 can be found here.) I've played the majority of them, and it really is a great list.

The Orange Box - 27 (Total 27)
Thief 1 and 2 - 5 (Total 32)
Call of Duty 4 - 30 (Total 62) I personally don't like it a ton but many people seem to think it's the best game ever. Play the demo.
The Witcher - 18 (Total 80)
Sim City 4 - 15 (Total 95)
Neverwinter Nights 2 - 25 (Total 120)

Have you got a pre-prepared listing of PC games or something that you bring out whenever someone asks a relevant question?

I'd take me too long to go through the whole PC games secetion, so I just took a look at this list:
Thief 1 & 2 Double Pack
Alpha Centauri
MechWarrior 4 Vengeance + Black Knight Expansion
Heroes Of Might & Magic 3
Alien Vs Predator Gold
American McGee's Alice
Homeworld
all well worth the money me thinks, though not the newest bunch.

Any suggestions where I could find it for relatively cheap? Even used copies usually go for 30 euros.

Which is the best way to get it.
Not really; I'm in the US and everything. I don't even know what a euro is. Is it a kind of cracker? It sounds delicious! Especially with cheese.
I decided to skip Bioshock, Crysis, Orange Box and World in Conflict, and wait until they come down in price little bit. But how does my list sound now?

Yes, a hundred times yes. Introversion's other stuff is very cool, but Darwinia is the standout to me.

Good start to the day. Pity it's going to be the worst one of your life. The light is now on.
My local GAME has it it in a 2 for €40 deal, their online shop might have it too.
