I used to own a PS2, but I gave it to a girl for Christmas. I only regret it for my old PS1 games (Final Fantasy Tactics, old SNES remakes on the PS1) and lately I've had the urge to play them again. The system I gave her was one of the original ones, and it has since broken. Here are my questions.
1) Is it worth it to repair my old system? I have no knowledge of how to repair a PS2.
a.) If so, how do I diagnose the problem?
b.) Where do I get the parts?
c.) Is there a guide on how to repair them?
2) Would it be more worthwhile for me to just buy a used system?
3) Or should I just bite the bullet and get a new one?

To fix your PS2, assuming you ran into the dreaded disk read error, open it up, and adjust the laser focus. (Actually, start by cleaning the optics, but that part's easy.)
I used this article:
http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars
but bear in mind there are a few different models of PS2, so there may be differences in the interior of the case.
That reminds me of a funny picture I saw once...when the PS3 was coming out, someone posted a picture of a PS2 and a PS1 duct taped together and said they had a PS3.
When my friend gets back to me, I'll ask her what went wrong with the system.
anyways. i bet the problem could be anything and best solution would be to just get another ps2. worth a shot though, the problem is its not getting any power anymore. can't get the red light to come on. has any body had this problem before or know any kind of possible solutions.
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
(Stupid answer) You did check the switch in the back, right? Other than that, I'd open it up and check for any blown fuses/exploded parts.
poopoo on you sony.
