I used to own a PS2, but I gave it to a girl for Christmas. I only regret it for my old PS1 games (Final Fantasy Tactics, old SNES remakes on the PS1) and lately I've had the urge to play them again. The system I gave her was one of the original ones, and it has since broken. Here are my questions.
1) Is it worth it to repair my old system? I have no knowledge of how to repair a PS2.
a.) If so, how do I diagnose the problem?
b.) Where do I get the parts?
c.) Is there a guide on how to repair them?
2) Would it be more worthwhile for me to just buy a used system?
3) Or should I just bite the bullet and get a new one?

Isn't a new PS2 like $100? Just go to walmart and buy one. Or go to target, don't give wal mart your money.
Pawn shops. I can't recommend them enough. I found a slim PS2 at a shop near my house for $80. I sold my original Xbox to get it, and boy was that worth it. Depending on the store, they might throw in controllers and memory cards along with that.
The frugalist method would be to fix your current PS2. The 2nd-frugalist method would be to get a PS1 off Craigslist or something. (Average price: $15.)
To fix your PS2, assuming you ran into the dreaded disk read error, open it up, and adjust the laser focus. (Actually, start by cleaning the optics, but that part's easy.)
Well, I do like a few games for the PS2 as well, but that 15 dollar ps1 definitely sounds like an option as well. i have no idea what I did with my old one. I think it might have died, or maybe I gave it away too.
That reminds me of a funny picture I saw once...when the PS3 was coming out, someone posted a picture of a PS2 and a PS1 duct taped together and said they had a PS3.
When my friend gets back to me, I'll ask her what went wrong with the system.
related porblem. my ps2 recently broke... again. sonyyy!!
anyways. i bet the problem could be anything and best solution would be to just get another ps2. worth a shot though, the problem is its not getting any power anymore. can't get the red light to come on. has any body had this problem before or know any kind of possible solutions.
Shit man I'll give you my ps1 for free. Only thing is you'll need to drive to central jersey to pick it up. (probably cost you more in gas than its worth)
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

(Stupid answer) You did check the switch in the back, right? Other than that, I'd open it up and check for any blown fuses/exploded parts.

I used this article:
http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars
but bear in mind there are a few different models of PS2, so there may be differences in the interior of the case.
