The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
It's up to the consumers now to change hearts and minds.
Movie studios seems to have given up. Retailers seems to have given up. And now Toshiba seems to be ready to throw in the towel.
That just leaves us consumers to effect the outcome of the critical HD format war. As firm believers in the HD-DVD format, it is up to us to spread the word and encourage a massive spike in hardware sales to turn the tide. Time is running out. HD-DVD needs our support now more than ever. We need to take proactive steps to ensure HD-DVD does not die like a dog.
I understand where you're coming from, I really do. But it's over.
Seriously, even if consumers were to leverage their buying power by buying HD-DVD players en masse that would just make the retailers happy because they liquidated their stock. It would be like buying the DivX players when they went on clearance.
Your HD-DVD library and player obsolescence are the price of early adoption, casualty of a format war. Maybe you can sell them in a decade or so on Ebay as a collector's item like Betamax. Meanwhile, the rest of us will be enjoying our 480p DVD's and our 1080p Blu-Ray which will have new movies coming out for it.
Something like this has already happened before. About a year ago, a bunch of you HD-DVD guys all went out and spent shit-tons of cash on HD-DVD players and movies in one day, and it made a noticable increase in sales. If it didn't work then, it won't work now.
There's really nothing you can do. I seriously doubt anybody can change Toshiba's mind, they've already lost a lot of money from the format and it's too big a risk to try again.
Why would I want to effect a change one way or the other? Is hddvd superior?
Because for some reason you're emotionally invested in the business dealings of a couple of multinational corporations? Because your self-esteem is based on whether or not the format you bought into becomes the one true format?* Seriously, its over... people need to let this die.
* I have a pile of both disc types on the shelf behind me, so I was guaranteed to win. Ha-HAH!

He just sighed. A long dejected kind of sigh.
Final Fantasy XI -> Carbuncle - Samash
Walmart going blu ray + Toshiba giving up = stick a fork in her
I never asked for this!
