Computer Freezes Momentarily Playing WoW (and other games)

I posted this in the wow tech support forums but they're most likely useless. I'm cross posting here because you guys are smart.

"I just resubbed today, and I'm running into a problem I used to have, but less frequently. As I am playing, I will get periodic minor freezes randomly. They are very strange. The graphics will stop updating, but I can still move my mouse cursor. The sound hangs, then recovers, then hangs again. Once the hang is over, the graphics rush to "catch up". I'll have a bunch of data from SCT(shows your damage as popup numbers) all piled up on screen, for example. Or another player's character will be there at first, then fade as if they had logged out. It never hard locks.

I also noticed this problem on some other games, most notably Far Cry, which was unplayable. I don't even know where to start on this, as I'm not sure what is messed up. I have a new display driver, and I just updated my CPU driver as well as sound. "

What should I even call this? I've been googling for solutions but I am having a hard time with a concise description of the problem. Does anything stick out as a specific piece of hardware that's malfunctioning?

This happens in a lot of my games, but it's noticeably worse in WoW, and it was really terrible when I played Far Cry through Gametap. Far Cry was probably once a minute, WoW is every 5-10, others have only been once an hour or less. It's just really bad on WoW since it's online.

dxdiag in the spoiler.

Interesting problem. There are several things that could be causing this sort of issue. Basically you are experiencing some sort of lag. The question is, where is the lag coming from? Is it hardware lag? Is it network lag? Is it software lag?

There are several things you can do to optimize your system at this point from what I can see from your DXDIAG. First, go into the Device Manager and disable any devices you are not using. If you aren't using your serial port, modem, parallel port, etc, disable them all. Every device takes up system resources, even if you don't have something connected.

Another thing you can do is see what programs you are running besides the game. It almost sounds like you are experiencing a hardware lag caused by the system busying out with something. Are you running any other programs in the background? Does the hard drive activity light come on when you get these lags?

Also check your system for spyware and adware. You could have something in there that is periodically using system resources. You probably don't notice it when the system is not loaded, but when the system is loaded, you get the lag.

Check all the processes that you have running as well. On of those services could be doing something periodically that causes the system to busy out. This can be a tough problem to track down, but the most likely culprit is something on your local system hogging resources periodically.

This I can do, and I haven't ever done.
Another thing you can do is see what programs you are running besides the game. It almost sounds like you are experiencing a hardware lag caused by the system busying out with something. Are you running any other programs in the background? Does the hard drive activity light come on when you get these lags?
I can't really see my HDD light but I don't hear it grinding, which it usually does if there's any kind of load on it.
Also check your system for spyware and adware. You could have something in there that is periodically using system resources. You probably don't notice it when the system is not loaded, but when the system is loaded, you get the lag.
I do AdAware/Spybot every once in a while, so it's not something they can catch. If there's another spyware remover, I can try it.
Check all the processes that you have running as well. On of those services could be doing something periodically that causes the system to busy out. This can be a tough problem to track down, but the most likely culprit is something on your local system hogging resources periodically.
I have a lot of processes running when I CTRL-ALT-DEL, but most of them look small from a memory standpoint. Should I run through Hijackthis or something similar?

I'm at school now, so I can't do any of this immediately. I'll try disabling some devices when I get home.

Alright, I turned off COM and LTP and my floppy disk controller.

I removed a few running programs, nothing major.

I tried running wow with -nosound, no dice.

I'm going to try to force OpenGL mode now.

weatherwatcher can sometimes be spyware (programs call themselves ww.exe). There seems to be a lot of tasks loading on startup that you probably don't need (Quicktime Task, HP Software Update for example). Usually everything under O8 and O9 I just get rid of. There are reports that HPZipm12.exe can sometimes be a process hog.

    But I don't know... I don't even work here. :)

I forced OpenGL on WoW, and that seems to work. I have no idea why.

I know WW is mine, I like it :).

The other stuff, yeah. I think it all goes away when I close out my printer program in the taskbar. I already uninstalled quicktime because it was giving me other problems, and because apparently it comes with itunes and a bunch of other shit I don't need.

I don't see anything particularly suspicious, but without seeing exactly what the activity is when you lag, it is hard to say which process it is.

One that I would suspect is utorrent. Torrent programs can cause spikes periodically. You may try turning it off and see what happens.

I had this problem with an ATI X1300 graphics card. ATI has some sort of recovery feature that kicks in regularly and causes all sorts of odd stutters/hangs/lag. There was a setting in the ATI Control Center that turned off the recovery, which caused the symptoms to change, but not improve. Reducing the graphics settings in the games didn't help. Turning off hardware acceleration identified the problem; the card.

I never could fix it, and ended up swapping out for a cheap nVidia GEForce 7600. The nVidia card resolved the freezes.

I see that you have an nVidia card, but perhaps it's still a graphics driver issue. You could try disabling hardware acceleration on the card to at least eliminate the card as the culprit (or run in VGA mode for a while). It's highly unlikely that you'll find a popup or log file that tells you what the problem is, so you'll have to start eliminating factors. This is where you ensure you have good backups. ;) I personally don't have a problem with rebuilding my OS, so I'd start over with a completely blank OS; install only the chipset and graphics drivers; install one game; and run like that (without audio even) for long enough to reproduce the problem. If the problem does not reproduce, then add the audio driver, and slowly add other stuff. If the problem IS reproducible with only the OS and graphics driver; I'd then start eliminating hardware.

You have to narrow things down to a reproducible event. Once you can reproduce it reliably, document the factors, and then start eliminating the factors.

I personally had this exact same problem when my graphics card was overheating. Instead of artifacting, which is typically what happens with an overheating GPU, I would get stutters, hang-ups, and extreme frame-rate drops with increasing frequency. It confused me for a bit, because task manager would report these as CPU spikes.

It's worth a look, especially if you have your computer in a place where it could potentially get dusty.

Tahnka, I'll keep your advice as a last resort ;-) It sounds a mite bit time-consuming.

I have thought about it being a heat issue before. I clean out my case regularly with canned air and I have it open at the moment. Is there a program that can overlay a GPU/CPU temp while I'm playing? That would be helpful to see if/when it spikes.

Like I said though, forcing OpenGL mode helped immensely. I did get one hangup last night, but that was playing over a couple hours.
