HD Video Camera Recommendations and how to acquire one cheaply

I'm thinking about trying to get my hands on an HD video camera for my trip this summer. A couple things I'm hoping for are that it's light, durable, and has good battery life. I'm going to be going across Canada and then across Asia and Europe from urban cities like NY, Toronto, Shanghai and Paris to very rural areas like Northern Canada and the Gobi Desert so it will need to hold up well.
The tough part is that I don't have an inexhaustible amount of cash, so if anyone has any legal ideas on how to get a hold of one cheaply (even if only for the trip), I'm all ears.
