Kind of weird: Civ II help?

No, not help in getting it to run in Vista (working fine, thanks). Just a gameplay question for which I have yet to find a definitive answer -- in the manual, gamefaqs, fansites -- you name it.

Is it possible to switch research projects midstream? The best I can do is check current progress in the Science Advisor screen. I'm playing for the first time in nearly a decade and I could swear this is something I used to be able to do back in the day. I need to abandon Miniaturization for Refrigeration, help!

I could've sworn there is a way, I'll try to install Civ2 again on my pc later and see if i can remember it... but you can't just click on the new one and have it switch, or click on the research bar at the top to cancel the current topic?

There should be a set of screens that give detailed information on your civilization - science/diplomacy/etc (I think you can access them via the toolbar at the top of the screen). Go to the science one and click on the subject you want to research.

I'm saying this completely from memory, though, so no promises I'm not getting it confused with Civ 3 (though Civ 2 is still my favorite - the Wonders videos are the best!).

Yeah, clicking on the subject in the Science Advisor screen as you guys suggest just brings up the standard info screen with prereqs, effects, stats, etc. I don't see any 'switch to this discovery' button or anything. Clicking on the bar at the top where the flasks stack up does nothing. Any other ideas?

It's been a long time since I played it, but I don't remember ever being able to switch mid-stream on science research, not like you can with city projects.

If nothing else (and if you have the cash reserve), maybe just boost your science tax rate up as high as it'll go until the current research is done, then pick the new one and set it back to normal.
