Netflix to invade xbox live: huge announcement or huger rumor?

There's been plenty of speculation that netflix would be partnering with microsoft to integrate their instant download movie functionality right into xbox live. For those of you who don't know, netflix offers about 7,000 movies and tv shows for instant viewing from their website, and have been talking sometime about set top boxes.

It seems, however, that this shit may actually be going down, and may be revealed at the GDC:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23214808/

last week netflix apparently sent a survey to current customers that flat out asked how often they would use the netflix service via xbox live.

To top it off when reporters ask microsoft about the rumor, the answer is 'stay tuned!"

This seems like a complete reality, and personally, this is going to send xbox live through the stratosphere if it comes about. I'm not a netflix user, but if this comes out I can assure you day 1 I'll be on board.

What about you? would this convince you to get a 360 or xbox live? Could this potentially smash apple tv?

My only problem is the fact that the HDD size is small enough to create a problem, unless you stream the movie from the Dashboard. Even then, a 700+ MB stream will take forever to cache up (and how would that work for the Arcade boxes?)

Since the announcement of Netflix dropping HD-DVDs. I've been planning to cancel my service because the only reason I signed up for those guys was because they were offering HD-DVD. Oh well.

I agree with the above poster about the HD being a problem in terms of streaming the vid off the net.
But from what I read before netflix was going to charge a lot (like $799 in partnership with the LG player for the set-top box. A bigger hard drive for the 360 is cheaper than that. It seems like it would be the straw that made me upgrade my HD or get an Elite.

Netflix would require a lot more contemporary movie titles to get my attention though. The current download/streaming movies are really lacking.

The only way I would be interested in this is if I could rent movies without having to use god damned MS Points.

    Seriously, fuck those things.

Netflix streaming is extremely fast. I'm running mine on a P3 733 mhz (weaker than the oxbox P3), with 284megs of ram and a 64 meg ati radeon 7500 series card.

I pulled a movie down on it the other day in no time at all (maybe two minutes preloader) and I'm outputting to standard composite video to my teevee.

With the 360 I'm sure it will be plenty fast enough.

As long as I don't get charged more for something I already own, and lease (in the case of netflix) then I'm looking forward to this.

Netflix already offers streaming video service that adjusts quality to match connection speed on several series' and movies.

Really all this would require is a plugin for the 360s media thingy

That's actually the point, that with your netflix subscription you'd be able to stream the movies from their digital catalog no differently than you do to your PC at the moment.

so yeah, potentially a really good thing. But the catalogue needs to get bigger and more new titles on it.

    Also, Fuck MS points.

It's been getting better lately. It's still not great, but they've at least been adding recent movies that people might actually want to watch.

Hmm, with all the partnerships that MS has been working to get/partnerships they have gotten over the past year or so for their own movie service, I'm not quite sure why they would do this. I mean as a consumer, if I already have Netflix, schweet for me, but I'm going to be less likely to rent their movies/shows since there's a, well, moderately mediocre chance that I would be able to stream it for "free" because of my Netflix account. In the end, it seems like this would hurt their own video store, and from the numbers that have been given, it seems like that business has been pretty successful for them. I'm just not quite sure how this makes sense. For the PS3, definitely, but for the 360? Not so much.

Edit: One thought that could be neat is if Sony could integrate this with Home somehow. They've mentioned group streaming of video and music in the past. Being able to stream a Netflix movie to your theater or whatever to watch with friends in your "Home" could be a rather compelling feature for the service, especially if only the host need have a Netflix account.

I just finished watching Planet Terror and Death Proof. Eh, it's something.

I did catch all the Dirty Harry movies, Network, and Soylent Green, so there's good stuff from thirty years ago ... think of it like the Gametap of movies.

You could look at it the other way, in the sense that those partnerships could also help netflix get content that's more recent onto their digital distro system.

It's not hard to envision a hybrid; brand new movies you can rent, and as time goes on those movies get relegated to the unlimited viewing plan. MS could use the netflix backbone for far speedier service.

And considering that the CEO of netflix is on the MS board, it's pretty doubtful this would ever go to a sony platform. Sony would either need to partner with someone else or create their own system. And if you notice, they've stayed away from digital distro of movies, most likely because they want to push blu ray.

    Recently I've watched or queued:
    Vertigo
    Last of the Mohicans
    Inland Empire
Once Upon a Time in America
    Letters from Iwo Jima
    Fido
    Paris, je T'aime
    30 Rock
    Little Deiter Needs to Fly
An Evening With Kevin Smith 2
    Descent
    This American Life Season 1
    Dexter Season 1
    Pan's Labyrinth

They aren't brand new blockbuster flicks, but there's still a good selection there. And it saves me a slot in my queue every time I can watch something online instead of waiting for the disc.

They have a lot of good movies on the streaming service. Then again, most people don't bother watching documentaries or classic movies, even though they are usually a lot more worthwhile than most blockbuster films.

Who needs Professor X? Give me Jimmy Stewart in a wheelchair a la Rear Window.

As for the real thread topic... I've been a Netflix subscriber for a while now but haven't really messed with the streaming video option. (Not for lack of the proper tech mind you, I have a DVR PC that outputs 1920x1080 to my LCD TV). I just never really dealt with it cause I'd have to use a keyboard+mouse interface. If Netflix started serving up videos on Xbox Live I'd definitely use that.

Whether MS, Sony or both sign deals with NetFlix, the telcos and cable company's are going to have the last say in it. If NetFlix streaming were to take off, that's a whole lot data coming over telco's lines and it's going head to head against cable company's *cough* evil ass comcast *cough* own pay per view / on demand revenue streams.

Man, Jimmy Stewart was a badass. He could take down Silver Surfer any day. He had an invisible rabbit friend, for fuck's sake!

As for the topic at hand, if this turns into a "you already have Netflix, here's some benefits if you have Gold (or PSN) or whatever," I'm down with it. I've never paid for video downloads off of the Marketplace because I HAVE Netflix. You know, I'd even go as far as to pay like 2-4 bucks more a month for "free" video downloads off of the Marketplace (or, again, PSN if need be) tied in with netflix, because it's easy to justify dropping down from 3 out at a time to 2 or even 1 if you get a lot just right at home. But that makes too much sense and is too rewarding for me, as the consumer so it will never happen.
