Quake Live - Free online deathmatch

LewiePLewieP Registered User regular
edited March 2008 in Games and Technology
id Software has chosen IGA Worldwide to bring in-game ads to the upcoming free-to-play Quake Live.
ImageIGA Worldwide will be handling all advertising, sponsorship and creative branding for Quake Live, a game that is a free-to-play version of 1999's multiplayer shooter Quake III Arena.
The multiplayer Quake Live will be accessible through quakelive.com, where gamers will have access to friends lists, communication features, sponsored events and tourneys, matchmaking and stat-tracking. The game itself is delivered through the user's web browser.
"This partnership is only the latest testament to the increasing acceptance of in-game as an effective, measurable advertising medium and a strategic revenue opportunity for publishers and developers," said IGA CEO Justin Townsend in a statement.

So, Quake 3. Free. Launches from your browser.

This is exactly how Ad supported gaming should be, and I hope this is a sign of things to come. They are accepting applications to be in the beta on the games official site right now.

Man, I hope "The Longest Yard" is in this, I used to love that level back in the day.
Multikill

Edit: From what we know, this game doesn't run in the browser, it installs on your PC and runs from your browser. I guess it's possible that in the future, they might design it to run from your browser, Phosphor (cheers Centipeed) makes this seem entirely possible at some point.

Just to clarify, this is a PC project, but PSN and Xbox Live versions are planned at some point, wouldn't surprise me if a Wiiware version was on the way too.

I preferred the name 'Quake Zero' rather than Live.

You know what they need, the ability to have a url connect you to a server.

So I can just say 'Hey, fuck you' to someone on forums and he can reply with 'I challenge thee to a duel sir!' as a link, I click it and instantly join his server in a popup.

I actually think that's the idea, but they haven't explicitly stated it. That would be pretty hawt though, and I imagine not that hard. If I am in the beta and that's not in it, I will be giving feedback to suggest it.

Yeah, I've been on board with this since it was announced as Quake Zero.

I love me some Quake 3.

I wish they'd make a handheld version of the game. But whatev. This is pretty cool.

Thanks for the heads-up about the beta, going to submit! I too wish they had kept the old name of Quake Zero, as Live sounds like some kind of Microsoft tie-in or something.

    Hmm.

Actually if this were also on Xbox Live and PSN, that would be really cool.

Now imagine you could play this on the Wii browser. And The_Scarab's idea is indeed fuckawesome, here's hoping they thought of that.

I'll have to say, the concept of being able to just pop into a game of Quake 3 at any time with anyone who has a web browser is a great example of what I think PC gaming should be more about, rather than hardware-raping beasts like Crysis. And I don't just say this because my computer is a piece of shit that can barely run HL2:EP2. :P

Yeah, in fact, iD was a long time supporter of OpenGL, rather than getting hung up on Microsoft's stuff, because OpenGL is something that works and is implemented in Linux and Mac platforms just as much as it is on PC platforms. Unlike DirectX or whatever.

Yeah, no. All of the back-end stuff is implemented through the website, but the game itself is downloaded to the computer and is run as a normal executable. They aren't saying you can run Quake 3 like a flash game, because that would be ridiculous.

Also, The_Scarab: It's already done with things like IRC, where you can have a URL open IRC and go to the specific server, so I don't see why it couldn't happen here very easily.
    Wren wrote: »

Because Quake 2 sucks for deathmatch compared to Quake 3?

It'd be awesome if there was some way to implement CPMA with Quake Live, because Quake 3 is going to feel weird physics wise to me now.

Finally, I go to Tech looking to make a thread about the free Microsoft stuff, and it was already made. I come to Games to make a thread about Quake Live, and it's already made. :(

I've played that. Phosphor is a better proof of concept.

Even so, getting a game like Quake 3 to run solely through a browser is still ridiculous, even if progress is being made towards it. The reason Phosphor and Raptor Safari aren't good examples is that they download a small fraction of what you'd have to download if you were to play Quake 3 in a browser window.

This is why I'm hopeful. If anyone can pull it off it's Carmack. Because honestly, Raptor Safari ran horribly on low-end computers (or least it did on mine, which I'm considering low-end), and that undermines a good percentage of its potential audience.

That really isn't the case. They are building up a second team because they just don't have the man power to make RAGE and another Quake (of which Quake Live is a testbed of features for). Plus he has even admitted saying he likes more simple games and that Quake3 is his favorite game of the ones they have released.

Right, but he's also said that he's tired of digging up his old IP's and wants to do something new. Had he had his way we wouldn't have Doom 3.
