NO. NOT THIS. THIS IS NOT WHAT WE ARE HERE ABOUT.
JUST NO.

Gather 'round metalheads! This is a thread about heavy/death/thrash/black/gore/power/speed/prog/technical/melodic/groove/sludge/doom/stoner/wang metal and general heavy music appreciation and discussion. Also worship of the most unholy one and maybe possibly metal guitar chit and/or chat.

We will begin our deliciously evil apocalyptic satan worshipping with a tiny list of awesome albums that I consider essential to the metal-lover of today.
  • At The Gates - Slaughter Of The Soul (1995)

An album considered by many to be the spawn and pinnacle of the melodic death metal genre, and others the greatest metal album ever made. Imagine throwing yourself into a veritable sea of sex-starved perfect 10's, but only for your ears. That's this album. The first track on the CD, Blinded By Fear, has been announced for Rock Band. On that day, millions of drum pedals will simultaneously melt in a fury of double-kick orgasms.

Highlight tracks: Blinded By Fear, Cold, Under A Serpent Sun, Suicide Nation

  • Metallica - Master Of Puppets (1986)

Yeah, these guys are now douche-bags, but when Metallica started thrashing CD players in 1983 with Kill 'Em All nobody would expect them to continue upping the ante and make progressively better albums, but they did. Hard. Though I enjoy ...And Justice For All for it's epic songwriting and complex rhythms, the guitar tone and overall band sound on this album are the best Metallica we've ever heard and ever will (hopefully not). This is the essential mainstream mid-80's thrash album (Slayer is a little less mainstream) and one that you have to hear before you die. At least once.

Highlight tracks: Master Of Puppets, Orion, Battery, Welcome Home (Sanitarium)

  • Sepultura - Chaos A.D. (1993)

Okay. I know this isn't as fast, complex, or straight up heavy as their 2 albums previous (Arise, and Beneath The Remains) but that doesn't mean it doesn't rock. Err.. metal. The really interesting drum beats, consistency, and recording quality are a big lure towards this album as my favorite of theirs. Also, this is the #1 album to groove and headbang slowly to. Catchy and thrashy, this is a fallback album of mine when I can't find anything else to listen to.

Highlight tracks: Nomad, Propaganda, Refuse/Resist, Kaiowas

  • Death - Symbolic (1995)

Chuck Schuldiner is my guitar jesus. Or satan. Or whoever else is really cool these days, like Paris Hilton. He broke the death metal genre out of it's coffin and unleashed it, dripping and shambling, upon the eager metal world where it has now spawned countless spin-off genres, countless really lame noisy bands, and countless t-shirts with really serious zombies on them. Symbolic is classified as progressive death metal these days but that doesn't mean shit. This album is Chuck's magnum opus in my eyes and one of the finest metal releases ever. EVER. I only wish I could make songs as good as these.

Highlight tracks: Crystal Mountain, Misanthrope, Perennial Quest, Symbolic

This concludes my list for now. I might feel like doing more later. Right now I want to ask if anyone loves metal and if anyone can recommend me some sweet death/thrash albums. You know what I like (look up), so suggest accordingly!

Newish release that I enjoyed immensely: Onslaught - Killing Peace (2007) .. harkens back to the thrash days of old (Slayer-esque/Exodus-esque).
Newish release that I'm looking forward to: Testament's next masterpiece due out this year sometime.
