So it should have been released yesterday. Anyone pick it up? I know it STILL hasn't changed much but the games are still strangly fun and addictive for a few of us.
Here's some wiki details:
This installment varies greatly from past games in the series. The player is able to make their character swim, climb, control rowboats, destroy walls, and pull off "unlimited combos" with the use of the new "renbu" system.[6] Dynasty Warriors 6 is for 1 to 2 players.
Dueling from Dynasty Warriors 4 returns, but this go-around will be quite different from the earlier installment. Duels will take place on the battlefield and the nearby soldiers will circle around the two fighters, instead of the duel taking place on a suddenly appearing plain. The A.I. is also enhanced: enemies are able to adapt to the players actions, i.e. if the player continually attacks enemies from behind, they will adapt to this and attempt to avoid the player's attacks. Wild animals such as wolves and tigers are also in the game, and can attack the character or on some occasions, become allies. Sneak attacks and ambushes are implemented, as well as the increased importance of strongholds. The Renbu system allows players to gain different attacks to the move set. As the renbu gauge goes up, the rank increases. The gauge goes up by continuously fighting the enemy. It will go down if you are hit. Depending how much damage you take, will depend how far the meter will go down. There are also many new attack types such as Grapple. There is also a Skill tree which you can level up by gaining skill points, and leveling up your character.
I can't find a list of playable characters but there's supposed to be 41 playable this time with Jiang Wei, Xing Cai, Pang De, Da Qiao, Zuo Ci, Meng Huo and Zhu Rong having been removed.
I would cry bitter tears for losing Zuo Ci but cutting Meng Huo and his wife? And one of the Qiao sisters? That screams expansion disk to me.
And there doesn't seem to be bodyguards anymore. That's certainly odd.

Haven't played this since 3 or 4, so I might have to rent this one.
Edit: Holy shit, I thought you'd said Pang Tong was removed at first. Whew

3 was good, 4 was crap. You could prlly find 5 for 20$ or less and it's darn good too.
And are those rods called tonfas? I think?
Because he's crazy like that, I guess.
Edit: Ha, I'm retarded. TAISHI CI is who I'm thinking of, not Tao. It's been a while okay!?

Or should I get 6 for $50...
Guan Yu
Mainly because he is one of my relatives.
Now Bladestorm, that's a good game by KOEI, believe it or not.
I've never playes an Empires game so I can't say. I've heard good things about them tho.
Which system are you playing it on?
I really grooved on Bladestorm. I just didn't like trying to find specific types of units units or even ANY units and it got repetitive even faster then DW.
Empires was really a bunch of fun. I stink at those kind of RPG games so I think I had to dumb down the AI on the conquest part but the fighting was still great. As repetitive as the game is, there is something so wonderful about maxing out a group of generals and bodyguards, then proceeding to kill every single soldier on the battlefield. mmmm....I feel the need for a fix coming on but I'll save my load until I can find part 6 on the cheap.
Oh yeah, FUCK Lu Bu!!! I make him run in fear!
It's not that's it's popular it's that stores get very very few copies in anymore.
Yeah, I had a blast playing the old ones. I think I'll just go for 5:E and save myself the money. The graphics don't matter for this game.
What kind of RPG games? Empires is good if you like the idea of adding some sophistocation to your battles. You basically select a character, and then lead your forces to conquer the usual RotK map. Its very RotK-lite.
After selecting your officer, you then start off with an army of lvl 16 generals stationed on your territories. At lvl 16, they can have a maximum of 2000 soldiers backing them up. These are basically the foot soldiers you see runnign around. I don't think its a 1:1 count of those represented on the field, because that would be a lot of mans. You then attack (or defend or do nothing) your neighbors to try and capture their generals and conquer their land. The battles are typical DW5 fare, but with no items except for those gained from killing enemies. All the crates are empty.
Between battles, depending on the size of your force/territory, you can take a number of turns doing strategic tasks, such as increasing your forces for specific or all generals, try to persuade other generals, increase defenses in your territories, etc. You can also accumulate skills and items that can be used in battle. You can take into battle 2 skills and as many items as you have. If you dont use your skills, they are retained, but items are lost after battle. Also, certain officers will make available to you special skills and tasks. Once you use these once, they are retained in your list of available tasks even if the officer is lost.
Your generals level up based on points gained in battle. This applies to your general and the others you bring with you, though your general will typically gain more points. Points level you up, and leveling up gains you access to improved weapons and stats, and a larger force. You increase from lvl 16 up to lvl 1.
Its fun, but as you get to the end of the map with almost all territories under your control, the enemy will gain a serious advantage and become incredibly hard to defeat. There are different scenarios you progress though, so after one run through, there is still plenty of replay.
edit: additions:
-You can shift officers around your territories between battles and that does not take a turn.
-When you attack, you have 30 minutes to defeat the enemy in order to take the territory.
-When you defend, I think its 15 minutes to hold off the enemy.
-You can toggle whether officers can be killed, which I think adds an execution option when you capture an enemy officer. Doing so would prevent you from being able to recruit everyone, though, if you're a completionist.
-You can toggle whether to retain levels when starting a new campaign. This can work against you as allies may now be enemies, after you leveled them up to 1.

Dynasty Warriors 6 is the worst game ever released in the series.
Yeah, I heard a lot of complaining even back when the Japanese version hit. I think I'll rent DW6 and wait for the real next gen sequel in DQ7...
As for the older games, my favourite one would have to be Samurai Warriors 2, though DW5 is easily the best out of the Dynasty series.
The new system is really neat but it's a completely new fighting system. The old DW fighting combos etc? Gone. Totally gone. No more square square square triangle. The Renbu system is totally different. Change is good but this is a series that peole are very comfortable with and I'm not sure the die hard fans will take to it. Had the game been playable, I would have liked to dig further into it.
No more bodyguards. You just have a horse now that levels up. I don't know about anyone else but I only ever use my horse as a glorified taxi and very little else. Thus, it bores me. I want my little coterie of pink ninja archers back.
The Diablo II skill tree system is mega cool. Love it love it love it. The levels, likewise, seemed very neat. The ability to climb and swim add a few more interesting choices and the Tactical Objectives make running around a lot more fun.
The camera. WTF? That's all I can say. We played some 2 player last night and, disgusted, I tried one player. The camera repeatedly RANDOMLY jumped all over the place. It's not the worst camera system I've ever seen but it's damn close.
The AI is the worst I've seen in the series; firstly because the rank and file literally do nothing and secondly because the balance is horribly off. The end level generals, even on Easy, will kill you with 2 hits. Literally. No one else seems to be able to damage you at all.
And, last and worst, pop in. Soldiers and generals appear and disappear around you constantly. There's a ridiculous amount of people onscreen at any time, so much so it's incredibly difficult to even keep track of where YOU are, mainly because the camera doesn't follow you directly anymore. This is made unbearable by the fact they constantly vanish. CONSTANTLY. In two player, despite the fact that there were literally 100+ guys around me at any time, you'll only ever see about 9. And if one is a general, they vanish with all the frequency of the pleebs and when a general DOES re-appear, for some reason it's always directly behind you and he's in the middle of comboing your ass. I haven't seen pop in this bad in the series ever. The game, literally, is broken because of it.
I'm returning 360 DW6 and I wouldn't even pick it up for 20$.

Nailbunny: So does your long post mean that in DW5:E I can't just singlehandedly destroy everything? It's been so long since I played these games, but I don't remember there being much in the way of like troop deployment and strategy in the old ones.
Is this specific to the empires games or am I just remembering them incorrectly?
Good choice. The Empires games are fantastic and 5 was the best of the lot. 6 does not sound any good.
Yeah, he's in it. :P
I'm such a whore for his trident-based spinniness.
OK the first few were great but a new concept would be nice
Agreed if you're talking about the main series, but the Empires spin-off has a bit more going for it if depth is what you're after.
But I accept that, because I have an addiction
An addiction to killing hundreds of guys in ancient asian time periods

There is plenty of single handed destruction, just in smaller increments (I've had DW battles go an hour before, so 15/30 minute limits seems fair.) It also feels like there is a purpose behind your battles, of which you have control. The battles are identical to the DW battles, except the field items are removed.
The tactics stuff is just part of the Empires series, which I think started with DW4:E. It adds more depth to the basic DW game. Its by no means a substitute for RotTK.

I mean, look at it! It's freaking beautiful, and to hell with the whole pop-up issue because DW3 had the same problem. You render hundreds of lookalike baddies and there's going to be a bit of trouble.
Heavenly Sword didn't.
Besides, why don't you rent it if you're unsure? If you like the changes then you can buy it, but if you don't then you just saved yourself some money.
Limed for various sad-but-truths. Rented, returned, sad.

Edit: Huh, Eurogamer gave it an 8/10. Guess I was wrong.
Haha, that almost makes me want it as well. It kinda sounds like he hasn't played a DW game before, though (even if he implies it), as the review could basically be applied to any game in the series - graphics aside.
They also seem to be the only ones in the world to give it a positive review. Major gaming sites aside, I haven't seen anyone really liking the game, even people who usually love DW.
i don't think anyone has to admit that dynasty warriors is horrible. it's actually pretty great, especially when you compare it to other games in the same genre. for example, has anyone played ninety nine nights? what about that capcom gang themed beat em up they made for ps 2. shit i cant even remember the name of it. namco has a shitty gang themed one too. and what about sengoku basara (devil kings)? tolerable but nowhere near great.
the dynasty / samurai warriors games are actually pretty great. it's really the beat / hack / slash em up genre that's become stale i think.
God Hand? Be warned, if you call it crap there's about 20 users on these forums that will abuse the absolute crap out of you.
As for the Dynasty Warriors series itself, the problem is that Koei throws a new one out each year with pretty small changes. Then they release two extra expansions for each game, which includes some stuff which were obviously taken out of the full game (like custom characters in DW5). If they just waited and included the XL and Empires features into the original release, then I think you'd find a lot less people bitching.
Yeah, DW3 had the same problem. Seven years ago. And it's not a "bit". This is worse then DW3 ever got even at it's poorest.
If this was the only DW game available for the 360 I'd be more lenient. But we have too many other darn good options to settle for this trash. This one's a mega-skipper.
You had better mean something that isn't God Hand. For your own sake.
Much less pop-in
More troops
The troops actually fight each other en-masse, instead of little "schools of fish" globbing together
Thats literally ALL I would change
To be honest the last few iterations of the game have so little pop in, if any, that I never even noticed it. In fact, I haven't seen any since DW4 except for a bit in two player Warriors Orochi.
Except, of course, for 6.
And the troop count is pretty crazy high now too, especially in 5 and Gundam. I think it was in 5 the first level has you easily defeating 1000 troops by the end.
But troop interaction would be really really great. I know, they beat the hell out of each other if they aren't on the screen with you but that's not very interesting.

12:57 PM: Get mail. Hey, DW6 showed up from Gamefly.
1:01 PM: Insert DW6 in Xbox360.
1:24 PM: Remove DW6 from 360, replace in mailer, seal mailer.
Ugh. So pretty but so poorly executed I have to question if anybody working on it actually bothers to play it before shipping it out.
