So I bought a DS Lite...

...along with The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Not only that, but they had a DS in my favorite color (cobalt)!

I was pretty much at the point where I have every 360 game I want to play, or have them already paid for (Lost, GTAIV, NG2), and while contemplating a PS3 purchase, I instead opted to go for the handheld. So now I need your advice on what should be my next few purchases. I have a few questions about certain titles, and I'm open to recommendation for others.

Super Mario 64 DS
Assuming I don't have that little finger-glove thing I heard about when the game was released, how does this game control? Is it worth it for $30?

The Ace Attorney games
I've never played these before, and so I have to ask: How long do they last? Is there much replay value in any of them?

Professor Layton and the Curious Village
How long does this one last as well? The idea of a Brain Age-type game with a story piques my interest.

Are there any Fire Emblem games for the DS yet? Any planned?

Why the fuck is it so hard to find Castlevania games?

Did you ever play Super Mario 64? If not, then buy it. Even without the finger thing, it's a good game. if you've played it before than I'd probably skip it. Pick up the New Super Mario Bros game instead.

The Ace Attorney are about 3-6 hours (depending if you use a guide or not) a piece it seems. I've only played two of them, but that is probably about the average.

Castlevania games are probably my best purchase on the DS so far. I'd go out and look for them if you can. :P

I played SM64 on the N64, but only for a few hours. Really couldn't stand that controller. If I ever get a Wii, I was gonna pick it up for that.

Then yeah, just pick up the New Super Mario Bros, you'll enjoy that MUCH more.

I played most of Super Mario 64 DS without the thumb stylus that came with the original DS. It's not needed for most of the stars, but with some of them you need a lot of precision to make certain directional jumps and using the touch screen makes it easier.

Ace Attorney is fantastic. Start with the first, and work your way through. If the story didn't catch you the first time around, don't bother getting the others, because it's more of the same. If you did like it, you now have three games which play exactly the same and continue the story. It's really love/hate with these games.

The Castlevania games are fun, if you can find them.

Can't really comment on any of the others.

The Tony Hawk games for the DS are actually really good, and great for short bursts of play.

The Phoenix Wright games are tremendous. I'd call them 6-8 hours each, but it's 6-8 hours of some of the best logic puzzles/adventure gameplay you've ever had. Zero replay value, as once you "solve" a case, you know all the answers, and there is no branching/alternate endings. Still EASILY worth the purchase.

OUENDAAAAAN (is better than EBA, is one of my favorite rhythm games ever)

Professor Layton you should pick up. It's the hot new game for the system and is actually really good. Lasts about 12 hours, plus there's a downloadable puzzle every week.

And Hotel Dusk is maybe my favorite game for the system

So far it is. There's another guitar-like game for the DS, but I'm not sure if it was any good or not. You used the stylus as a pick for the guitar.

Or you could import OUENDAN!!!!11!! from play-asia, but that's entirely up to you.

Get Mario 64 DS once you've gone through New Super Mario Bros. That way you can get a hold of the learning curve which is a lot steeper then the N64 version.

As for the Ace Attorney games, one thing to note is you can save at any point in the game where you need to press the "Play" button or "A" to continue by pressing the Start button.

Thirding (or fourthing or whatever) EBA, as well as Contra 4, Castlevania (both), FFIII, NSMB, Metroid Prime: Hunters, Brain Age (the puzzles on 2 are harder than those on 1), and so on.

I'm currently playing FFXII:RW. I have about 4 hours in on it so far, and I'm still not sure if I like it.

Also, a Fire Emblem DS game is in the works; no word on when it'll be out, except not soon enough.

The Ace Attorney games are fun. I'm not sure if you'd be able to find the first or second easily anymore.

I'll heartily recommend the Advance Wars games, too. I think I prefer Dual Strike, but the new one is great.

And I know it's one of those games you either love or hate, but the DS Pokemon games are fantastic. The last one I played was the original Blue, so I'm sure that's why it feels like such a phenomenal leap forward, but I've been loving that game.

    Carnally.

EDIT: Oh God, get Hotel Dusk if you have any love at all for adventure games.

Professor Layton is a must. I didn't find New SMB so great, myself. It felt like a step back in gameplay variety to go back to the SMB roots, but if you're a longtime fan you'll probably enjoy it. 64 felt too much like one of those weird versions of Zelda with items switched around and I wasn't entirely satisfied with any control scheme.

Contra 4, as said, is a nice old-school shooter if you like the series (or it's imitators Alien Hominid or Metal Slug), plus it includes the old NES games as a bonus.

Mario Kart is good, assuming you have people to play with who don't snake.

EBA and Ouendan are great and the Advance Wars titles can make up for the (temporary) lack of a Fire Emblem for the system. The Castlevanias are good, but hard to find.

On the weirder, more experimental side, Animal Crossing and Lost in Blue are games I enjoy. They're NOT for everybody, though.

I second Hotel Dusk. I loved that game. The music was snazzy too. Professor Layton is amazing. The puzzles are fun and sometimes they tear your hair out. Don't get New Super Mario Bros. I was dissapointed with it not to mention it was 5 minutes long.

No Fire Emblem game yet. I'm still waiting, but I think there might be one in devlopment. I dunno.

I picked up a Cobalt DS on release day (after looking for 2 weeks for another one). My recommendations in lime. The rest I can't strongly recommend for various reasons.

I found both Castlevania games in the first EBStop I walked into. Also picked up Resident Evil (which, judging from the save files, had been on their shelf since mid-06!. And half the label came off when I tore off the price tag which, WHY did it have a price tag when it's in a bag behind the counter and there's a box on the shelf that's tagged?).

Picked up FF3 from them "new" (complete with an employee's saved games!).

From Best Buy I picked up Pokemon Pearl, Picross, Mario Kart DS, and Marvel Trading Card Game.

So.... 8 games in two weeks. Oh, and Zelda is on it's way from Gamefly - used up my $5 credit before cancelling my sub.

So that pretty much clears out my to-buy list. There's a few others on there but they are either "I'm bored and need a new game to play" or "waiting for price drop". New Super Mario Bros. is at the top of both of those lists.

Picross is awesome by the way. So is Puzzle Quest (which I already have on XBLA)

Personally, I found the DS Nintendo staples (NSMB, Zelda PH, Metroid Prime Hunters, Pokemon, etc) to be extremely stale and samey, but I love the rebirth of the adventure genre on the system. Phoenix Wright, Professor Layton, Hotel Dusk, Trace Memory....I love them all to death. I'd also recommend Trauma Center and keeping an eye on the upcoming Ninja Gaiden DS game.

The new Advance Wars is super nice. The 1st DS one was a little too convoluted for me being new to the series. The 2 COs & the Dual Strike shit just overcomplicated it for me. Maybe I'm just kind of dumb. But Days of Ruin is sweet. The plot shit is also way more bearable.

Also my highest recommendation for Picross DS. It should be $20.

Elite Beat Agents is pretty damned good. Even if you hate the songs it's wacky enough to still be entertaining.

Also, Clubhouse games has been indispensable. Only if having card games, checkers, dominoes and shit on the go excites you. I don't actually know how the AI is I almost always play with someone else.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin definitely gets a thumbs up. And shit, Pokemon too.

Those six games could last you an eternity. PoR is actually a little half-assed in parts but is still quite excellent and I prefer it to the 1st DS Castlevania.

NSMB, MK: DS, M&L Partners in Time are all ok. Polished, fun but not super remarkable. There's other stuff that's kind of YMMV... I loved what I played of Etrian Odyssey for instance but it's definitely not for everyone. Trauma Center.

I kind of hated Phoenix Wright. The characters and scenarios were cute but... ugh, some really broken 'puzzles'. I like puzzles. Getting through some of the later PW shit is less 'doh, now I get it' than 'wtf that's fucking absurd' or 'oh, they fucked up wording the script in a manner that would make this solvable'. I'd try the first I guess but don't, like, buy a bunch right off the bat lest you fall into the 'hate' camp.

& I'll be picking up Layton on payday for sure.

If you like puzzle games, you should try and hunt down Meteos. It might be hard to find though. It's a falling block game, but you use the stylus to line up 3 in a row and then they launch back into the stratosphere, taking any blocks above them with it. It's a lot of fun. And it works in a story about this evil planet launching blocks at others, blah blah blah. It's fun! And it's made by the same guy who developed Smash Bros.

Phoenix Wright just isn't getting enough love in this thread. I found the 2nd game cheap locally and decided to give the series a try. After playing through the 1st case I was hooked so I put it down and hunted down the 1st and 3rd game so I could play through them in order. Working my way through them in small chunks (save anywhere FTW) now before I pick up the 4th game.

Another strange title that I can't recomend enough is actually Star Wars Episode III. Very solid and fun sidescrolling beat em up. Star Wars meets Streets of Rage. IMO probably one of the better Star Wars games.

Also if you can find it Tetris DS is awesome. Lots of different gameplay modes, online play, and some really cool nintendo themed levels and modes.

I just got a DS as well, so this thread has been very useful for me. I've only got a couple of games right now. Pokemon Diamond, which is great if you like Pokemon. And the first Phoenix Wright, which is great if you like murder mysteries and don't mind occasionally wonky puzzles for the sake of the story. I don't think it's really a game so much as a series of stories told through an interactive medium. And I just ordered Professor Layton, I've heard that I can't go wrong with it.

A "game" I'm interested in which no-one has mentioned yet is Electroplankton. Has anyone got an opinion on that? I am aware that it's not technically a game, as such, but it looks like a hugely fun toy.

I liked Electroplankton a ton. It even sold my GF and Sister on buying DS'.

But it doesn't have a lot of content, and buying the US version is super, super expensive now I think. Worth $30? Maybe. Worth $50+? Ehhhhh.

It's not really great as an instrument or song creation thing, more just a short series of cute, sound-generating toys.

Still I loved it. The sounds are kind of slick and sometimes new-agey, not really to my taste, but yeah, still loved it.

EBA and Ouendan are the same game, except you can understand the language in one of them and you can't in the other. J-pop is just American music with (mostly) Japanese lyrics. I imported Ouendan 2 and the only improvement I noticed over EBA was that the beat patterns were a little more interesting. And the final song sucked.

Don't get me wrong, do the import, but buy EBA first.
