Choosing a wireless provider...also feat. Which phone should I get?

My contract with Cingular wireless recently expired right about the time my Razr (V3, I think.) decides to crap out on me. With that, I'm considering switching to another provider if they have better service, lack of dropped calls, etc. With Cingular, there would be times where I couldn't place a call for about 5 minutes for whatever reason. Also, I would have a day where I would either not get any calls, voicemails, or messages for a 4 hour delay or so, or I wouldn't even get them at all. I'd be ok sticking with them, but before I do, I have two questions that I would like to ask the faithful H/A community.

1.) In your opinion, which provider has the best rate and the best service. I don't care about the prices of anything other than basic minute packages (Maybe 400-500 anytime minutes) and text messaging. Anything else, I would never use.

2.) With whichever provider you favor, which phone would give me the best bang for my buck? My razr has been great for about 3 years, but during that time, if I placed my hand on it a certain way, both whomever I'm talking to and I could hear the same type of buzzing that you could hear if you place your phone next to a speaker. Very annoying. I don't care about a camera, games, or anything other than durability and size; nothing huge at all. No blackberries.

Any help is much appreciated.

Oddly enough, I have never had a problem with a ATT/Nokia. I recently "upgraded" to ATT/LGFlipphone and now both my mom and I get shitty service, but on the blocky nokias, we got perfect reception almost anywhere. I was usually the person with four or five bars, when others were struggling for one. I am planning on getting a non-flip after my current phone can be upgraded. I live in Southern California, so ymmv.

I suspect half the problems you hat with ATT were because you were using a RAZR.

They're the most successful proof of polishing turds ever.

It may help for people to know what part of Texas you're in.

Agreed. Up until the most recent generation, RAZRs were crap phones. AT&T has good coverage so I'd suspect the phone before I'd suspect the service.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

Well I've had one of the new RAZRs too, and I agree with everyone here in saying they are indeed pretty junky.

The only thing I can think of mentioning to you would be getting the Nokia E70, but this is merely based on what is on this website >_>; :

Warning, some pretty crude and anti-iphone content

Ok, so let's say at this point, I'll be sticking with ATT and have no plans of keeping in the Razr family. What phones have worked great for you? Remember, I'm going for durability and a small profile. I don't care if it's flip or otherwise.

    Sony Ericsson W580

Also had a POS Razr for 2.5 years with ATT and upgraded to that. It came "free" with a plan and I have to say that I really like it. Much better audio quality, the menus are much more responsive (and jazzier), battery life is leagues better (I can got for 2-3 days on a single charge), and it has lots of other features that are pretty snazzy, if extraneous. Stuff like a MP3 player/FM radio, pedometer(!!) and fitness tracking apps, lights that can smoothly transition through a whole spectrum of colors (sounds retarded but looks pretty slick).

Only downside is the vibration is somewhat weak. If you have the phone in your pocket and you're briskly walking somewhere, it can be almost unnoticeable.

I'll look into that one. Thanks for the advice.
