UT3 news -- Epic's President admits to UI being f*cked
Basically the main problem is the filters for finding a specific server isn't that great, and choose some mutators and other options like that for single player instant matches can be tricky.
Ironically they may have been better served to delay their release, as it came under stiff competition which probably hurt its sales.
Not only that, but by waiting a bit, they may have had some time to build up at least a little bit of hype for the thing.
When UT3 was released like.. nobody even knew it.
Actually, I think this is a sort of a good thing. At this time, the FPS that is actually worth it to many people for the PS3 atm, is in fact UT3. Player made mods for the PS3, one of the best multiplayer experiences ever, as well as a really polished and masterful product. I mean polished product by the actual gameplay, which is much more important than a pretty UI. Certainly I would rather have a game where the gameplay and maps and everything has been play tested the hell out of, rather than a game where they made the UI the first priority.
For the PC, well, it's always more or less been a cult following game. It's too fast to be widely accepted as a staple in the FPS line up, like Halo. And already there are some major mods in the work, even some that are already finished! Though yeah, there was hardly much hype.

Halo was ported to the PC, and has pretty much died out as far as multiplayer following goes. To call the UT series a cult following, are you mad? The original was named Game of the Year by a handful of publications (hence, UT GOTY edition). UT and Q3 were pretty much the staple of online FPS gaming, fast paced fragging. The fact that UT3 came out, and even some avid UT players had no idea, has got be a sign that there is something wrong.

Not everyone appreciates how fast UT3 is, nor how expert the players can be. Unlike Halo, which seemingly everyone and their mother has played, and I called it a cult following title because it has became that way. The mainstream is more focused on Gears 2 than on UT3, for example. What does that say about it's popularity?
I'm tempted to get UT3 on the PS3, however i'm not sure if it will be a game that will have a decent fanbase, or a one month wonder that everyone will buy and then play about 4 weeks then never touch again because GTA4 or something is out.

Yes, but you were referring to how UT has become a cult following on the PC, which is just false.:| UT, Q3, and CS were the holy trinity of PC FPS gaming arguably.

I think it's all explained with the UT3 trailer for 360.

Actually, I am surprised. I played it at a friends house and the controls feel pretty damn good and there were plenty of servers and players.
UT3 is actually a very fun game. The UI is pretty sad though, and it really is just a rehash of the other UT games, but it is fun to play and very pretty to look at.

UT3's release was just an all-around clusterfuck. Pretty much for the reasons that you two just listed. I still wonder when developers/publishers are going to get a clue and realize that releasing 75% of games in the same two months is really bad for business.
I do. The gameplay is really fun and I have a thing for over the top sci fi action. The UI isn't really a showstopper. Although I wish it had the number of options UT2k4 did. And more maps would be awesome.

Well, that's the heart of the problem. When you take into account all the user generated content, UT2k4 is just the better game.

Have they released the UT3 editor yet? (don't know the proper name)

Well, if the community isn't there no one will want to support it. Personally, I'd rather see them release UE2.0 as open source so people can make their own games.

The Quake III engine is open source now, and it's almost as good.

They're not going to do that when they're still charging 500,000 - a million fucking dollars for 2.0

The UI isn't all THAT awful...
But yeah, it isn't the best by far.

What are some games with good, useable UI? The only thing I can think of is Smash Bros and the Wii channel interface.
Actually it was Epic's fault for wanting to do a simultaneous release and sucking at time planning.
Cool, though.

Right, and had there been no console port of UT3 this wouldn't have been an issue.
I'm not saying that whining PC gamers would be rational, just that they would be somewhat vindicated by this.
I win!
I will use this to rag on stupid PC/Console simultaneous development for years.
The issue wasn't the console port
the issue is they wanted the console port and the pc port in time for the holidays
they should have just waited since they apparently spent like 5$ marketing it.

And if your talking about how "fast" and "expert" people can be, why don't you pull up the numbers for Counter-Strike?

"from the studio that brought you Gears of War!"
Man those were the days. Now Unreal sucks and Q III is free.
Actually, I am surprised. I played it at a friends house and the controls feel pretty damn good and there were plenty of servers and players.
just because somethings free doesn't mean it sucks any less ;-)
This is what I'm talking about! Woo hoo!
Honestly there's no point to the prettier graphics, because the people who play competitive on it will turn the graphics all the way down anyways.
I beg to differ, I played the shit out of UT2K4 online from the day it was released, but I haven't been able to enjoy UT3 on nearly the same level.
Yeah, it feels quite different.

I refrained from picking this up not because of a UI, but because of the incredibly similar content compared to older Unreal titles ...
