I'm pretty sure I know the answer but I want to double-check before I throw 300 bucks away. I apologize for the letter format, I'm reposting this from...somewhere else:
Hi all,
I'm a longtime Xbox 360 owner. I sent my system in for repair once and they sent a replacement. It has just started to DRE up the wazoo in Lost Odyssey and Oblivion has been chugging. Also, when I turn the 360 on, it spins the disc with a very loud grind once and then stops. Anyway, I know the signs...this means that my Xbox is on its way to death.
I'm out of the 1 year "non-RROD" warranty, so to get my Xbox 360 repaired would cost 107 bucks and take 6+ weeks. I might do this anyway but I don't want to wait.
Anyway, on to my questions: I previously had a premium system (with a 20 gig HDD) and I bought a LOT of DLC on my primary gamertag. However I am the only one that uses my Xbox 360.
So assuming I buy an Arcade system for $279.99, I should be able to use my existing 20 gig HDD and access all the content while signed into to XBL (either Gold or Silver, right?). I'm permanently connected to the internet as it stands so I really don't mind that I have to be connected to use the content. I'm just trying to make sure this is true. It comes with the standard network port as well, right?
Also, aside from the HDD and included peripherals, the Arcade systems are identical to the premium and elite systems, right? It should all have HDMI ports and the latest chips/hardware revisions, right? I mean, the actual system itself is identical...correct?
1. I have not done it personally but from the research I've done you can use your hard drive on a different system as long as you are logged into the XBL account (gold or silver) that originally purchased the content.
2. I cannot answer for sure on the arcade system question, I'm pretty sure I remember reading somebody buying one that didn't have HDMI, but I cannot say for sure.
Yes, the Arcade is identical. It doesn't come with a hard drive, an ethernet cable (big whoop), a headset, or component cables (only composite), but other than that the hardware is the same. It definitely has HDMI (or at least mine does).

HDMI is still a bit of a crapshoot, from what i've read; the newer ones do have it, but there are some that don't
It's only the original Xenen model 360s that do not have HDMI. After the Elite was released MS switched to putting HDMI 1.2 into all 360 models. So only really old used 360's don't have HDMI.
If you're buying an Arcade to replace a broken 360 yes you can use your hard drive on the new one. But you will have to be logged into live if you want to use any of your downloaded content. And I do mean any of it do to MS's DRM.
I was under the impression that all 360s now had a 3 year warranty.
for the red ring of death issue ONLY
Ah. Well, it sounds like it's getting there pretty quickly. Is there a way to speed it up without blatantly voiding the warranty or abusing the system? Maybe leave it on for a week or so?
