X-Files - The Truth is coming back

The untitled X-Files sequel is the second feature film based on the TV series The X-Files, following the 1998 film of the same name. The sequel is directed by the TV series creator Chris Carter and written by Carter and Frank Spotnitz. The film was first anticipated in November 2001 to follow the conclusion of the ninth season of the TV series, but it remained in development hell for six years before entering production in December 2007 in Vancouver. The stars of the TV series, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, return to reprise their roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. The premise of the film is not yet publicly known, but many of those involved, including Carter, Duchovny, and 20th Century Fox, have spoken of the film as one that would stand alone and be apart from the mythology of the TV series. The film is slated for a July 25, 2008 release.
What say you denizens of Penny Arcade? Are you still intrigued by the mythos of X-Files enough to see a standalone movie?
What does standalone mean in this context? If it has Mulder and Scully, how is this going to be apart from the TV series?
From what I understand, it will not be a part of the "mythos" of X-files. Standalone in this context merely means something similar to the old "monster of the week" episodes. You know, the ones that didn't necessarily fit into the overarching plot of x-files.
honestly i thought that the "mythology" episodes ended up being the weakest part of the show. i watched the x-files to see what kind of crazy thing mulder and scully would come across this week, not to follow a lame storyline about aliens and old dudes and a virus that ultimately went nowhere.
if they had wrapped the main mythology part up in the first few seasons and then moved on to another Big Deal, i think the show would've been better off. as it stands, i can think of maybe one or two awesome mythology episodes versus several dozen awesome monster of the week episodes.

Agree. My favorite episodes have nothing to do with the "mythos" side of things. I really wish they could have wrapped up the original storyline within the first two seasons and moved on to something that didn't involve boring old men doing boring old things to keep boring old secrets...secret.
Thank God it's not going to be in the myhtology. I don't remember any of that crap any more. Random Mulder/Scully adventure? I'll watch, as long as they leave the AlienMiracleSuperBaby or whatever it ended up being at home.

Perhaps they will be investigating the mystery of why the last two seasons sucked like a black hole?

I would argue the last 4 seasons weren't very good. Season 5 was great, but once they left Vancouver, it just lost the special vibe. I loved how every place M&S went was cloudy, wet, dreary, and had tons of pine trees.
I was more excited for this in shitty size-of-a-postage-stamp quality, than the Indy 4 teaser in HD.
Once T-1000 and the psychic chick entered the show it started to suck
as a fan i like to pretend that the entirety of of season 9 does not exist. oh and i can never say it enough fuck carter for killing the lone gunmen for the stupiest reason. wow now they can be a vison to mulder in the finale. thanks asshole.
i think people always forget that when it wanted to be, the x-flies in its prime was one of the funniest shows on tv
That second clip is actually from one of my favorite episodes. It's the one where Luke Wilson plays the small town hick sheriff, and the fat kid from Sandlot plays a creepy vampire weirdo.
And the episode is told from Mulder's side and Scully's side of how things happened, with both of them making the other sound ridiculous.
This episode is, without a doubt, one of the more disturbing things I've seen--TV or movies. One of the only TV episodes to get a MA rating.
The show's mythology kept my interest up until around season 6 or 7 and was at the top of its form around the time "Anasazi" aired--the end of season 2 up through probably season 4. I'm up for another movie.

She was under the bed! On a fucking dolly!
Part of me is sad Chris Carter is attached to this; I feel like in many ways he has no idea what the hell he is doing. Certainly he had no idea to write long-term story arcs for a TV show. The canonical arc was awesome when
Deep Throat was around getting killed
and stuff, and I loved Krycek but then it started sucking hard.

I actually think X-Files is one of the marvels of television FOR it's over-arching storyline. There are examples of shows to do that in the past, but a primetime, major network television show wasn't doing that kind of thing (at least that I can remember) when X-Files came around. More shows came along to copy that, and I think it has inspired others that have done it even better. To say he had no idea I think is hyperbole. The problem with the show is that main alien thread is spread out over SO MUCH, that it's hard to keep it straight. I'd watched the show from about halfway through the 1st season, and stopped around season 8. After they came out on DVD, tried introducing it to my girlfriend, and she was so completely lost.
The show's biggest strength has always been its two lead actors, both of which overshadow all the other stuff in it. If anything, it's stars were too big for the hokey alien storyline, especially after the movie came out. It just got so silly, and the actors seemed to have lost interest in it.

Then it's a good thing this isn't a long-term story arc!

i know, my favorite part of the episode is probably where mulder and luke wilson try and fail to shoot out the tires of a camper that's stuck going around in circles

A bigger mystery is how gillian anderson got even hotter after so many years and children and everything.

I only really watched the first coupla seasons regularly. I saw the odd one after that and watched the film. The film pretty much killed any interest I had left. Not that it was bad, but I was tired of really nothing ever being resolved and just got bored I suppose.
Anyway, my favorite episode of the X-Files is also some of my favorite television ever: The episode Darkness Falls with the glowing insects in the forest.
If this movie has nothing to do with aliens and abductions, then I am all kinds of interested.
Oh, God, I need to rewatch the series. I've always been a huge fan, but I've actually never seen beyond Season 5, even though I own all the seasons.
In season 5 there's an episode dedicated to Millennium, and I was like "whoa hey, I gotta watch Millennium first!", after which I just sorta stopped after the first season. Not that I don't like Millennium, it's an excellent show, but going off on another tangent that made me lose track of X-Files. I should watch it again, but season 1 has some really bad episodes, like Gender Bender.

That's one of my favorites as well.

I recently buy the complete collection dvd because I had discount card for christmas it was not my first choice but I buy it anyway so after reseeing it all( before that I only saw the stand alone episodes, the movie and season 7 to 9)
I would agree that the mythology arc didn't go anywhere but I still like the stand alone episodes especially the funnier one like the frankestein one, the vampire town and also the one with Charles Nelson Reilly, Jose Chung's From Outer Space.
the movie can be interessing but storywise how can they make a stand alone movie if mulder and scully are not in the FBI and also because the coming alien invasion?

B-grade alien conspiracy theory shows/films FTW!
(Too bad there's not, apparently, going to be one)
Also: Anyone for a Lone Gunmen appearance?
We're the heathens?
Perhaps they will be investigating the mystery of why the last two seasons sucked like a black hole?
Since it's a standalone movie, perhaps it's set back when the were in the FBI?
Time Machine? Flashback? Alien time machine in a flashback?

or the one where the highschool kids find that cave which lets them move at super speed.
or the cops one.
i havent seen half of the episodes.
the movie was great though.
seriously, dvd sales of xfiles must be insane. why not make the next movie, cash in, start up the series again. im sure all involved would want to.
I support this idea as long as Duchovny can still do some more Californication.
She's a Cougar. She'll be hot until she's like 70 and even then she'll probably be bangable.
