A Heartwarming Story of Gamers Pulling Together in the face of Violence

Hey guys,

I'm a longtime fan of Penny Arcade and I think what they do for Child's Play is fantastic. Recently a tragedy has truck my own personal gaming forum, and the response has been rather overwhelming, and I felt I would share the story here with you all.

The following is a reproduction of an e-mail I sent to Tycho:

I have another story of a band of gamers pulling together for a good
cause. I am a member of a gaming community at www.the-nextlevel.com ,
a mostly-defunct gaming media site which still has a thriving,
tight-knit community. Recently, tragedy befell one of our members (I
have replaced his real name with his gamertag):

"[ElCapitan] was found early Friday morning by police severely beaten
and left for dead near 8th and 9th Avenue by the railroad tracks in
downtown Nashville. He has several skull fractures and a laceration on
his stomach. He was rushed to hospital and has been there ever since.
Doctors do not know the outcome of the situation because everyone
heals differently from brain damage.
"

El Capitan is probably the biggest fan of Gears of War, arguably one
of the most violent games on the current trio of systems, and led play
sessions nearly every night since the game has been released, and yet,
he couldn't be a nicer young man. He was taken advantage of by a group
of people at a bar on Valentine's Day, who had offered to give him a
ride home. They beat him unconscious and robbed him.

This tragedy has shaken the tight-knit community on our site's forums,
and the response to help has been overwhelming. To date, our small
community has raised $1630.95 towards gifts and/or medical expenses to
aid in his recovery,
and donations are still pouring in. Some members
of our site have also used their industry resources to contact Epic to
see if they will extend some sign of support to El Capitan, as he is
one of their biggest fans.

I just wanted to share this story with you because I feel it is
another great example of the depth of compassion that can be found in
the gaming community, and that we are ready to give year-round, not
just when Child's Play hits. I hope this gets some press somewhere,
not selfishly for TNL or El Capitan but to illustrate how a violent
online video game that is generally portrayed as public enemy #1 can
result in a positive outpouring of support from a large community.

But instead when these fuckers who beat El Capitan are caught we will
read about how they spent the day of the attack preparing by playing
San Andreas.

If you wish to follow up, you can view threads on the ongoing status of ElCapitan here and here.

    By the way, I am

ABSOLUTELY 100% NOT trying to solicit donations from you people, I just wanted to share the story. Just so we are clear.

I have no idea why those sick fucks that mugged him had to beat him to within an inch of his life after they knocked him out. He was already drunk. Those assholes have no goddamn souls.

El Capitan is back from the hospital today.
The good folks at Epic hooked him up with some Gears swag, and Cliffy B. took time out to sign Cap's get well facebook page.

All told we raised about 2,000 dollars for him.

It's great to see the gaming community pull together to help one of their own.

Cap plans on getting right back to his Gears playing tonight.

I'll be one to say something, but I hope that the damage didn't impair his motor skills any. It could be difficult if he can't do something he once loved to do.
