Gaming on a Tablet PC

I have a couple of questions related to this one topic so I thought I would keep them together. I recently bought a tablet pc for art but after some convincing from my buddy I decided to see how Warcraft 3 runs on it, and it ran great. But a couple of issues have popped up, and I am wondering if you guys can help. Perhaps this is better in the help/advice forum? But it seems it is pretty game and technology related as well.

First, I would like to find some great hot-seat turn based games so that my buddies and I can pass the tablet around while watching a movie or something. I have Heroes of Might and Magic V which worked after some fenagling, the frame rate is not so hot even on the lowest graphic settings but it works. But other games in the same vein, preferably 2D, though games without particularly intense 3D would also work.

Second, my tablet doesn't have a keyboard. Or it does, but it is infrared and the whole point is to be able to just play the games on the screen. I need an on screen keyboard that will stay on screen when I am running a game, such as Warcraft 3. Is there a trick to keeping something like that on top? Or is there a piece of software that will do it? It is difficult for me to play rts games without my hotkeys. And I found Sins of a Solar Empire works well too so I was hoping I could get that going.

tldr - I need what is in the yellow text.

So upon further research I found the Civilization games are turn based, but can anybody tell me if they can be played via hot-seat (you take your turn, get up, the next guy sits down and plays his turn).

While I can offer no help, that is an interesting setup. I've never heard of using a tablet PC for this kind of gameplay. I doubt there will be many hot seat multi-player games simply because computers are typically thought of stationary devices for a single user (less stationary since the wide adoption of laptops.)

Pretty sure you can do hot-seat with Civ IV.

Civilization is perfect for your needs of hot seat gameplay. Also, alpha centauri if you can find it. I'm almost certain it has hotseat.

I know the Worms games or a variation of Scorched Earth worked like this, we would play like that in college at times.

Also for your keyboard issue, I thought Windows came with an on-screen keyboard that worked the way you are looking for. Have you worked with that one and if so what issues have you had that are making that one not work?

Thanks guys! I am going to buy Civ4 tomorrow and I will also check out Alpha Centauri.

As far as my keyboard issues, windows does indeed come with an on-screen keyboard, and there are several third party options for on screen keyboards as well. The problem is that they do not stay on screen whenever I start up a game so they do no good.

I came in here to mention the Worms games, but I was beat to it. Crayon Physics looks like a great table PC game, but it's single player. Shattered Union is a good modern day turn based strategy game and would work quite well for tablet hotseat, if I remember correctly and it does have hotseat. It's a couple years old, which means that you should have no problem running it if you ran Warcraft 3.

I second Worms, but check to see whether it works on Vista - I've had some problems.

I will check out Shattered Union, and Worms of course. We used to play worms a lot thought I am not sure it will still entertain us as much today. No worries about vista, my tablet is running xp tablet edition.

    I advise against shattered union

I usually give a reason why a game isn't desirable, but really... this one just isn't fun

    It does look hilarious though.

Can anyone tell me if a keyboard is a requirement for Civ4? I started the tutorial but one of the first things it asked was for me to press 'c'. Also, if I do get it is it worthwhile to pickup the expansions as well?

Age of Wonders has hotseat, and I don't think it requires anything other than a mouse.

Battle for Wesnoth has hotseat too, and you can play without a keyboard but you really need to be able to right-click.

That won't work. The unit comes with a keyboard, but it is impossible to use while you are holding the screen. And even if I had a docking station option I would just use my notebook instead of the tablet if I wanted to be stationary. The idea here is to not carry any extra computers for games with me when I travel. And also to feel awesome by playing a game with just the tablet.

Mahnmut - I will check out both of those games, right-click isnt a problem, the pen has a right-click on it. I appreciate the suggestions.
