Devry Takes 360s From Starving Children's Mouths

Or, you know, something slightly milder. I made mention of this in the D&D chat thread when asked about my new sig, and was told by someone to bring it over here. So I'm going to tell you the same story I told them, with minor alterations for clarity...

mtvcdm, what is up with your sig? How did Devry U fuck you over?

Okay, for the past month I've been in this contest Devry's been hosting, a contest that no longer deserves to be named, and Morgan Webb's been advertising. A game concept-off, if you will. Come up with an idea for a video game, and then defend it from all the other entrants. For the whole month, I and literally EVERYONE ELSE in this contest was under the impression that Morgan would pick one of the ideas, and that person would win an Xbox 360. (Though there were some people who thought it would be based on votes, and there I came in third.) As such, fights occasionally broke out because of accusations of vote tampering (read: turning off the cookies and voting over and over).

So eventually, Morgan picks my idea as her favorite, and I get all excited because I thought I'd won the 360.

Key word 'thought'. Immediately upon my beginning celebration, the admin pops up- the first time he has in the entire contest- and posts:

Hey All, the XBox winning entry will be randomly chosen on or around 3/11. Best of luck!

That's right, I and everyone else went through a month of heated debate over our respective ideas, and then it turns out they buried something in the fine print to where the winner gets chosen out of a damned hat, making this entire thing utterly fucking pointless. I could have posted 'DUR HUR I WAT TOO SHOOT ME SOME ALIENS' and had exactly as good a chance of winning. My idea that I've fleshed out in my head for years has the same chance of winning as the person who used his entry to hit on Morgan, or the person who suggested "take turns designing cookies".

Now, I'm not mad at Morgan here. From what I now know, she's merely an observer to the proceedings and had, ultimately, no control beyond mentioning the contest on WebbAlert and picking out a couple games she liked. I blame Devry here, for running a contest so misleading that not a single entrant was able to correctly discern the method of selecting the winner, and making no effort to correct anyone until after the event everyone had thought was going to select the winner had already come to pass.

Like I said. I am not disputing that the rule is THERE. I am disputing the fact that all indications outside of that mention in the rules were that this was somehow merit-based, and absolutely no effort was made to dissuade any of the contestants from that thought until it was too late.

Obviously you didn't do that. Therefor this is your fault (and the fault of 200 other people who didn't read the rules).

Again. Yes, I should have read them. Someone should have read them, anyone. I did not do that, and that is nobody's fault but mine.

But not enough of an effort was made to let it be known that the method of selection was a random drawing. That's what I'm mad about. Morgan never mentioned it, the admin didn't mention it until Morgan had already picked her favorite, no mention was made on any page where contestants were congregating. Had they been running this properly, there would have been mention of being "entered into a drawing" on the main page, or an admin would have stepped in at any point in the last month to correct someone who was under the impression that it was merit-based.

Who would have corrected the various people debating game ideas btw? Did anyone ask the person directly or is just an assumption that adminstrators/mods on forums actually read and think over everything posted instead of just looking for violations of posting policy.

Because it says absolutely nothing except that your entry is eligible. Promotions like to use 'weasel words'. I got taken in by that, and now you are too. The quote only says you're entered to win. It says nothing about HOW you win. Anything past the fact that you are eligible, you are reading into the phrase yourself.

They do this in commercials all the time. They strongly imply one thing, but at no point actually legally commit to that thing. Once, Ford promoted their LTD with the phrase "700 percent quieter". You could read a lot of things into that- 700% quieter than the previous Ford model, than a Chevy, etc. That's the clear implication.

    What did they actually mean?
The inside of the LTD is 700% quieter than the outside of the LTD.

Generally "automatically entered to win" means that you'll be "automatically entered to win by random drawing". At least in anything like this I've ever seen.

Everyone who entered the contest assumed that it was based on merit. But Devry didn't do anything legally, or morally wrong here. It's not their fault you didn't click on the link labeled "Read more about the sweepstakes here."

Go down to where it says "Prize Drawing:" in nice big bold letters.
Prize Drawing: All Promotion entries meeting the requirements of these Official Rules will be entered into the prize drawing, to be held on or around March 11, 2008, at Sponsor’s offices at 123 Second Street, Sausalito, CA 94965. Seriously, when you buy a car do you not read the fine print? When you get a warranty do you not read the fine print? When you get a job do you not read the fine print? The fine print is there for a reason, to make sure people don't assume things and end up being wrong about it. Sometimes fine print is misleading, but here it's nice, big, and bold. Instead of being bitter. Go invest that energy in XNA or somthing and make your game a reality. Or continue to whine on message boards. It's up to you.

This. Especially since it's a cool as hell idea, and you know some asshole will certainly be willing to rip it off.

If I had any technical skill at all- anything beyond Excel- or had I known the true method of selection- I'd never have entered. I'd have shopped it around to people, or done it myself. I only entered it because I thought I'd at least get a 360 out of it before it entered the public domain. You have to remember that not all of us are technical wizards. Some of us are text jockeys with no experience in even so much as Flash. I have no skill or other method of doing the game myself.

So I put it out there, and now some guy probably WILL rip it off before I even find a programmer. Digipen's not exactly in my backyard, people.

I have a new soccer blog The Minnow Tank. Reading it psychically kicks Sepp Blatter in the bean bag.

You know what would be hilarious, if you actually ended up winning the system after all, after making all these vitriolic posts about what assholes the folks at Devry are and such for their horribly devised contest etc just by shear luck of the draw.

You're preaching to the choir on that point, man. However, you could probably find some way to get it made--hell, a bunch of dudes from this very forum are well on their way to making a total conversion multiplayer mod for HL2 where a bunch of cowboys fight zombies, complete with what appears to be a drivable truck.

But I bet a Barns and Noble is in your backyard and you can get a Programming book. Look, I'm being honest with you right now, you are being a giant douche. Yes, it sucks that you didn't understand the rules, but what you are doing is not constructive at all. If you spend your whole life looking for hand outs and bitching when you don't get one you will fail, hard.

Again, my advise to you in three easy steps:

    Get off your ass.
    Stop bitching.
    Go do something.

If you want to see your game become a reality look for some free mod tools or a simple game making utility. If you just want a 360 get a job or save your xmas money.

I'm not trying to be an asshole. I'm just trying to motivate you and help you realize that your current course of action is no action, and that you are spinning your wheels right now.
