I currently have a domain registered, and hosting through 1&1.com, but their prices have gotten a bit high for me. I recently learned about Google Apps, and how you can use your own domain name with their hosting services, and I'd like to switch to them, but I'm not sure how. Basically, I want to know how I can transfer ownership of my domain from being through 1&1.com, to some other service like godaddy where I'll only need to pay $10 a year to keep my domain, but host my files and such through google apps.
Godaddy at least will do Domain Name Transfers. Basically, you initiate it through GoDaddy, then have to get authorization from your current registrar to transfer the domain name.
Contact your current host and ask about doing a domain name transfer to another host... or call other potential hosts and ask if they do domain transfers.
Edit: Alternatively, if 1&1 offers domain registration only (without hosting) you could drop your hosting account and change the DNS record on your domain name to point to your Google Apps hosting.

here's a quick PDF from GoDaddy indicating the flow. http://products.secureserver.net/guides/TransferInsider.pdf

You will have to get an auth code from 1&1, which will most likely have to be done over the phone.
Then you make the request from your new godaddy account.
The process takes about 2 days.
Then, to get your domain to work with a particular host, you have to point your domain at the hosts name servers so it can resolve the URL.
I am not sure if googlepages has it's own nameservers set up. It might.
