*two-year delurk*
Oi - just got BootCamp installed on my MBP and secured a copy of BioShock. I am enjoying it immensely. However, having XP installed on my computer means that, for the first time in years, I once again have a computer that will run sweet, sweet gam3zorz.
Despite playing a shitton of PC games during the 90s, I am now completely out-of-touch. Besides WoW (which I finally quit last year), I think that the last PC game I played was Diablo II. Or maybe Hitman. Like, I haven't even played Half-Life 2 yet (Orange Box is next on my "to purchase" list).
I'm basically ready for anything great - I used to play anything from Starcraft to Giants to Freespace to Serious Sam to Diablo II, and so on. What am I dumb to have been missing all these years?
PS. I just quit WoW last season, one point five levels away from 70. No MMORPGs please - my work ethic has suffered enough!

Seconded. Come play TF2 with us, IMO.
COME FORTH, AMATERASU! - Switch Friend Code SW-5465-2458-5696 - Twitch
Anyway:
- The Orange Box: All of the HL2 series so far (not HL1 or those respective addons), Portal and TF2. And even once you're done with them there are a lot of really good mods to try.
- Dawn of War / Company of Heroes: Depending on how powerful your system is and where your preferences lie, Dawn of War is a pretty awesome RTS rendition of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and it's still going with another addon pack due soon.
Company of heroes on the other hand came out later, is more hardware intensive, but is a pretty awesome WWII strategy game, bucketloads of atmosphere. WWII maybe be an over-done topic in gaming, but they've executed it quite well here.
-The Witcher: Fairly in-depth singleplayer PC RPG. You can find out more information on it in the thread. Generally a lot darker than the standard Tolkienesque fantasy games you see. The devs are actually doing a pretty hefty re-vamp of the game to fix some of the major complaints, when they're done they'll be releasing it to retail, but regular users will be able to download the patch and upgrade for free. The demo takes you through the first act.
-Sins of a Solar Empire: Like a hybrid RTS and 4X game. Depending on the universe size games can last anywhere from a couple of hours to literally weeks. Pretty epic in scale. No singleplayer campaign as such though. It's mainly designed as a multiplayer game, but I find playing against the AI plenty of fun as it is, I haven't touched the multiplayer yet.
-Audiosurf: Takes a music track that you give it and turns it into a road that you race down, it's a sort of music puzzle game, reminiscent of games like Rez in terms of visual stylings. It's pretty awesome, you can try the demo on Steam.
-Freespace Source Code Project: I realise you've already played it, but since you've been out of the loop for a while, you may not know that it's now free and being updated in what's called the Freespace Source Code Project (SCP for short). Updated visuals and effects with the same awesome gameplay.
Tonnes more but I can't think of them at the moment. I'd suggest Crysis but I suspect that your machine might have problems running it.
yeeeeeesss.
Well, I've played a lot of FPS, a little RTS, and a whole helluva lot of Diablo. I'm mostly a console gamer - REZ and JSRF and Castlevania are my bread and butter. That said, I cannot resist a quality PC shooter. I'm super-down with this Freespace thing I'm hearing, and will be tracking down a copy of Serious Sam as soon as I can find one.
Also, I consider Star Control II the best PC game ever made.
Really, I'm hoping that this thread will be the place for obvious games I'm forgetting to play (Doom 3!), as well as a place where I can find those underground smash hits that went under my radar while I was busy with WoW. Like I got a little excited in that special way when I heard "Freespace Source Project."

This link is for the installer. Basically you download and run this, and it'll download and install all the relevant components that you choose at the beginning. Requires downloading a few GB's of data since you're essentially downloading all of FS1 / 2 with updated visuals, plus whatever other campaigns you want to include.
To hear a cool little addition they made, go to the in-game tech room.

This. This is why man made the internet.
Seriously buy it. What can be more fun then leading an army of medieval soldiers? How bout when your in the head of the charge. Nothing, nothing, is more satisfying then hearing the *squish* sound when you cut open a mans chest!
go get it
The zone welcomes you into the fold.
You never dissapoint when one of these threads roll around do you?
No, and, in fact, I usually pick up another game or two that I somehow forgot to add. In this thread, it's Mount&Blade, which is what you get when you focus on the combat aspect of medieval Europe instead of the "what if there were elves and orcs and magic" aspect of medieval Europe.
I dunno a uncategorized giant list with nothing but names doesn't really help someone find some good games.
I never asked for this!
For Diablo II Style clickfest, check out Titan Quest, and it's expansion Immortal Throne.
Just those two together can be had for under fifty bucks and monopolize your time for years.
Except that they're all good games.
Every time you post your godly list I always find a game that I have to go out and buy.
No joke, I'm heading out the door right now.
Seriously man, don't say this. I played WoW for damn near 3 years, and the game is just as much of a grind at 70 as it is before 70. Hell, I think a lot of people would say that it's more of a grind at 70. So yeah, I suppose the game changes for the worst.
WoW is great if you're OK with being a monogamous guy with a girlfriend that treats you like shit. You will not touch another video game while you play WoW.
To actually contribute to the thread, if you're into First-Person RPGs, and can look past bugs, I'd very much recommend STALKER and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. The latter of which I just started playing, and am already loving it. Both games can be had off of Steam for $20 each.
Also, agreeing with people who have said Company of Heroes. It's a very cool, very fun RTS with a WWII setting.
Boarmonkey. I see what you did there!
Currently playing: GW2 and TSW
If you aren't pleased with the original game you can download the Onin no Ran mod if you want to play as a samurai. The last days if you want to play as a soldier in the lord of the rings, or as a pirate in the Pirates! mod.
Its community is a very good example of why i like pc games more then console games, it adds so much to the game with its mods.
I'll also second staying the fuck away from WoW. You'll either a hit a point you can't advance past, and be stuck doing the same boring shit everyday or you'll finish everything and be stuck doing the same boring shit everyday.
Tachyon: The Fringe was a pretty good space game too if you like them.
I'd definitely further recommend the Freespace 2 Source Project - it's seriously fantastic and they even made a port of Freespace 1 for it which quite frankly is awesome. If you happen to like Battlestar Galactica you can even check out Beyond the Red Line, which is a BSG mod for the Freespace Source Project which looks very promising.
If you like tactical RPG's at all, you might also check out Silent Storm, a turn based World War II themed RPG with fully destructible environments 3D environments. The story is nothing special but the gameplay itself is stellar.
