Triggerheart Exelica now on XBLA - Let's swing some planes!

So Triggerheart Exelica just came out today for XBLA for 800 MS points. Why should you care about yet another shmup on XBLA (well, besides the obvious answer that shmups rock!)...

1 - It's not just about shooting. In fact the main point of the game revolves around using your grappling hook to grab planes, swinging them around you, and then hurling them off in an explosive mess at your other enemies, clearing the screen of enemies and bullets and getting a ton of points. It's almost like a puzzle game with bullets added.

2 - Enhanced visuals over the Dreamcast version. I've never played the Dreamcast version, but the XBLA features clean sharp images. Not quite as good as Omega Five but still pretty nice.

3 - Adjustable boss difficulty. Depending on how well you do (score, items collected, no deaths, no bombs), the bosses will have more stages to them thus opening the way for higher scores. You can see this in the demo - an average run of LV1 might have you only fight 3 stages of the boss, but if you do really well, you'll get like half a dozen stages of the boss plus a second boss (with a little extra story) after it blows up.

So anyone else excited about this game? I'm surprised that I haven't seen anyone talking about it here; usually when a well done XBLA game comes out there's plenty of discussion about it.

I love and am terrible at these kinds of games. Thanks for making this thread or I'd never have noticed.
I am an xbox newb - what other good shmups are there on xbox?

Other good shmups on XBLA include:

Heavy Weapon (especially good in 4 player co-op online)
Omega Five (some of the best graphics of any XBLA game)
The two Mutant Storms (opinions are split on which one is better)
Rez HD (rail shooter, needs to be experienced at least once)
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved (quick frantic fun, only 500 MS points)
Space Giraffe (a love it or hate it game)
Metal Slug 3 (legendary run & gun shooter, but close enough for me to include it)

Also Ikaruga should be coming out soon and that's one of the best fantastic shmup.

I really suck at this. Waaay too much going on onscreen at one time, but I really like the graphical style of the game.

I'm waiting for Ikaruga...I need to at least try it before I die.

Hm...so nobody cares about this game apparently.

I haven't bought the full game yet (I've got some money coming in a week or two that I'm waiting on), but I've played the demo level many times. My best score is around 21 million. The key to the high score is bosses - about 4 million of those points were from the regular enemies and the rest was made during the many different forms of the boss and extra boss. Of course, the regular enemies aren't worthless: the points you get from defeating enemies by tossing them is based on how many of the little chips you've picked up already.

Since I don't see a current "booo, I have Live problems", I figured I might mention it here, see if anyone's had the same situation.
So my subscription expired last month, and while meaning to renew it, MS had been trying to auto-charge (which I don't like, but that's another issue) a card that had expired. Now I could've just used the correct card and paid £40 there and then, but wanted to get a better deal from a pre-paid card. The offer I wanted arrived today, I try to sign in to Live to input the code, and.. my account has been suspended. And I'm told to update my details from the Account Management tab. Except I have to be on Live to access this tab, and I can't sign in to Live because my account is suspended.
Anyone else got stuck in this paradox? I've emailed Live support to see what they can do for me, but if there's anyone with some sympathy or advice, that'd be dandy.

This game kicks the fuck out of my ass and I love it.

I was playing the first level and looking at the achievements thinking, "Oh, this will be some easy shit"

and then I got to level 2

and then I got to 3, and then 4, and then 5 D:

For the True Endings, can you do it on Easy? I could've sworn I cleared through on Easy without a continue and still got the normal one.

Can you not just sign in on the xbox.com website and do it from there?

Edit: Slightly more OT, I'm gonna grab the trial of this game but I am absolutely horrible at these games so I shall see. Also, to add to your list of shmups Rainbow, Aegis Wing is a good sidescroller which just happens to be free.

Yes, but keep in mind that the replay value is through the roof. I must have spent several hours just on the demo alone trying to unlock the hidden boss and get my score higher and higher. On the other hand, if you're the kind of person who doesn't care about score then this game probably isn't for you.

Little let down on this so far. It's too bullet hell-y even with the swing mechanism. Which I've not yet grasped.

Could get better, but I wouldn't recommend it as a "starter" shoot em up. Get the thoroughly brilliant Omega 5 first. It's better in every way imaginable. And a truly excellent game.

You know me: I'm all up ons another XBLA shmup, but due to really cutting back on new games I'm going to have to hold back on buying this for a while. I played through the demo once quickly, though I'm still figuring out the mechanics. Is swinging enemies the key to a higher score, or is it shooting them down and then sucking up the coins?

It's been really tight lately for me too. I still haven't picked up Mutant Storm Empire, though I've had the demo languishing on my hard drive for months, and I still need to scrape up some loose change for whenever Ikaruga drops. I have about $35 in GameStop credit that I've grandfathered in to my no-new-games embargo, but this has to last me for roughly the first half of '08 so I'm holding back on buying MS Points for now.

It's easy to cut out "proper" games but downloads are so easy to get - urgh... very tempting. But yeah, if your tight I would say skip this one.

So, yeah, how about that Level 4 on normal? D:

AKA: "Oh shit the screen's full of bullets nowhere to move... wait, if I swing a enemy the bullets turn into points? What? Okay, that eliminates fifty bullets, there's still FIVE BILLION more..."

    Still fun, though.

Also keep in mind that if you lock onto an enemy that you can't swing, it slows your movement speed. This makes the bullet hell segments substantially easier to get past. The fact that your hit box is tiny & you can use enemies as shields also helps.

The key to a high score is definitely the grapple/swing attack since that not only gives you a bunch of chips to collect but also gives you a point bonus based on how many chips you've already collected. However, don't completely ignore bullet attacks: it's nigh impossible to kill everything using just grapple attacks and it's better to kill something with bullets and get a few points for it than to not kill it at all.

Also, the key to getting the secret boss on Stage 1 seems to be to have at least 3000 chips collected by the end of the first boss. Dying drops your chip total so that's out, but you can use bombs (just keep in mind that you get fewer chips from enemies you kill with them).

And I just got my tax refund: a hefty $2000+ (and that's not including the bonus money that everyone gets later). Yes, being a starving student with 2 kids is fun come tax time. This game, N+, and Lost Odyssey shall be mine tonight! :D

This game gives me the urge to hook it up to my 22inch lcd and set the screen to rotate.

Now I just wish change air blade would come out for XBLA but that won't happen... ever.

Triggerheart Exelica's demo is a surprisingly large chunk of the game (1/5 levels) so you should be able to figure out if you like it based on the demo. Keep replaying LV1 until you manage to get the hidden boss to show up (you'll need a high chip count and need to avoid dying at all).

The latter levels are cooler than LV1 IMO. I especially like LV3 & 4: in LV3, you're in an aerial battle so just about everything can be swung and LV4 has a very cool section where you have to use the swing attack like a madman as the screen fills up with enemies & bullets galore.
