I recently came into possession a gift card to Gamestop and was debating on what to get. I own a DS, PS2, Wii, and a PC (That is a couple years old). I really don't want to get something for the PS2 as it being older and I want to spend money on something new (I also don't want to spend more than 20 bucks on an older game). There are, as far as I know, no new, good game for the DS, so that leaves it out. Now I know Brawl comes out next week so I probably will end up getting that.
Now you may be wondering: "Why did he make this thread about FPSs"? I was wondering if there was any good FPS that I may not know about. But not just any type of FPS will do. I want something that is like Area 51 (PS2), F.E.A.R. (PC), or something even in the vain of Silent Hill / Resident Evil (if they were FP and not third). Beggers can't be choosers, so something like Halo will possible do. What I don't want is something war. I think I'm almost to the point that there is enough War FPS.
The game can be older, or it can be newer, that doesn't bother me. Any help you guys can provide will be awesome.
You get 5 phenomenal shooters. For some of the best class based combat around you've got Team Fortress 2 and then for a more story oriented shooter you have Half Life 2/Ep1/Ep2 and then you've got Portal
I have it, but my system can't play it properly =( . I installed, started it up, and the opening scene looked like crapped. I actually had to find a video of the first 5 minutes to see what actually happened. I didn't know I was even in the ocean.
I saw that House of the Dead 2 & 3 were coming out for the Wii but they don't sound all that great.
EDIT: I guess the reason I liked Area 51 so much was the things to find and the paranormal / weird things / cool things to shoot in the game. I guess that's also why Silent Hill / RE elements would be nice too. So stuff along that.
BioShock without a doubt if your computer can take it

Buy Portal. It's totally worth the 60 bucks, and it's the best "shooter" of the year.
Oh, and you get 3 Half-Life games and Team Fortress 2 for free.
Failing that, The Darkness was a damned phenomenal shooter with a terrific story and really fun gameplay. You can find it pretty cheap now, too. C'mon, it's f'ing Starbreeze.
Edit: DOH. I thought The Darkness was ported to the PC. Sorry.

Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust

Ok, sounds like your video card can't handle SM3.0. That'd rule out badly done ports like R6:Vegas. I don't know what the latest patches added/fixed, but S.T.A.L.K.E.R. might be worth considering.

I assume you have the FEAR expansions and Doom 3. Since your PC is less than stellar, and you don't have a 360, options are kind of limited. Either the game is for the Wii or it's fairly old -- old enough that they probably wouldn't sell it at Gamestop. Maybe throwing PS2 back into the mix would yield some results, but there aren't that many atmospheric shooters available for the platform.
I recommend Dementium: The Ward for the DS. The gameplay is really good and the game can be kind of creepy. Also, I recommend Metroid Prime: Hunters for the DS and Metroid Prime 3 for the Wii if you don't have them yet.
I didn't get the F.E.A.R. x-pac, but I've been meaning too, and I can't wait for the 2nd, though I will need a new PC by then. My friend has Doom 3 and I played it, pretty good.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is sounding like the best at the moment, and it sounded pretty good when I first heard about it.
To all those who keep saying OB and Bioshock. I have both. I just can't run Bioshock. Speaking of which, would anyone know what I can do other than getting a new rig to run it? VC is radion x800 (I think it was 800). I know my friend had a problem with it too, his VC is nVidia, and they released a patch just for Bioshock.
There's a lot of good quality shooters avaliable with a subscription to gametap as well, if you're interested in that
I think it's about $60/year for over 1000 games

I assume it's a problem with the shaders -- Bioshock requires 3.0 shaders, which some cards just don't have.
Still, you'd want at least a decent processor and RAM to run it, and unless your PC was super-stellar when it was built I'd say the chances of that are iffy.
Check www.systemrequirementslab.com to see exactly what's wrong with your computer and you'll see how much you need to upgrade.
edit re: gametap
I wouldn't say there's a ton. There's Serious Sam: First Encounter, Serious Sam: Second Encounter and Serious Sam 2, Jericho, Total Overdose, Ranbow Six (which doesn't really count) FarCry (which is good, but you can also get it free, albeit ad-supported, from Ubisoft). I think they're the only non-generic ones, aside from maybe Operation Flashpoint, which is a war game.
Still, aside from that there are some fantastic classics available, if you're into that sort of thing.
STALKER is a great game marred by some of the worst technical issues I've seen in a long time. It's a fucking mess. I've had constant CTDs, critical errors that restart my PC, and even a couple of corrupted saves. All that before even installing mods.
If you can't run Bioshock, I'd be a bit wary of STALKER.
Edit: If you have an nVidia card, you're probably okay. Most of the problems seem to be for non SM 3.0 ATI users like me.

Is that before or after the patches?
Fully patched (1.005 STEAM version) and un-modded.

=( That really sucks. Maybe they should bring out 1.1 =P
EDIT: THQ, you're better than that
Let's say I had a 360, what options would I have there? What about PS3?

Halo 1-3, Bioshock, CoD4, and The Darkness. I highly recommend any of those.
Anyway, supposedly the minimum reqs for COD4 are a 9800 or 6600, so you could try that if you liked the previous ones, but it might be a bit difficult to run
I've played a bit of it, and it was a much needed addition to the franchise, but I really wanted to move away from the war games. I'm not really looking for something for the multi-player or because the graphics are on par with real life. I want that unique story that Area 51 and F.E.A.R. (I know I keep mentioning them, but they were awesome) gave me.

Sounds like you should play Doom 3.
It's no darker than FEAR, it has the unique storyline, and you should be able to run it easily. The game's Multi. isn't much to talk about but the single player if fairly long for a FPS. I recommend you look into the Steam Id bundle. You can get dozens of FPS including Doom 3 for $70. This way, if you turn out to be one of those heathens who hates Doom 3, you have several other great games to try. Quake 4 is in there and it offers many of the same pluses that Doom has except it has less closet monsters and you needent worry about a flashlight mod. Finally the original Doom is always fun. There are plenty of WADs you can try. I'm pretty sure you can use a port for it to update the graphics.
I've had STALKER since release day and yea, plenty of bugs/tech issues then, but I started playing again maybe three weeks ago and nothing has gone wrong so far. I've modded the hell out of it too and nothing has broken.

Ones I have:
Orange Box
Area 51
Prey
F.E.A.R.
Call of Duty 1, UO, 2, 3
Medal of Honor AA, a few others
I've played and didn't much like Halo
I'll add more as I think of them
Could always try Gears of War...but yea it's War.
I saw that House of the Dead 2 & 3 were coming out for the Wii but they don't sound all that great.

it's a lightgun game if you're into that sort of thing
Or try picking up GMOD from steam, provides plenty of hours of pure dicking around.
Oh, and you get 3 Half-Life games and Team Fortress 2 for free.

Dunno if such a game exists, honestly.
Now would you kindly buy Bioshock
He did. It doesn't run.
Also, get some taste.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is sounding like the best at the moment, and it sounded pretty good when I first heard about it.

Anyone who doesn't like the orange box set hates freedom.
And that makes you a terrorist.
Yeah, you. I'm talking to you.
I'm not a big fan of pay to play (in the renting sense). I like owning my games and I don't think Gametap is my thing.
I like how some people post without reading the posts before them =P Very humorous...

It's like no one around here can fucking read.

I was about done with it after that.
Also, uncompleteable quests ftl.
=( That really sucks. Maybe they should bring out 1.1 =P

Hey!
Some of us are color blind Ok?
Halo 1-3, Bioshock, CoD4, and The Darkness. I highly recommend any of those.
All the games on there are really good, it's a good value.
Surprised it doesn't get more love around here.
Irony much? He already said that he has it
Anyway, supposedly the minimum reqs for COD4 are a 9800 or 6600, so you could try that if you liked the previous ones, but it might be a bit difficult to run
This man speaks the truth.
I played the campaign on regular and then on veteran, and put 24 hours into the online, and I'm a long way from done with this one.
There are online game types that I haven't even tried yet.
