I have an extremely dry mouth.

I've had a very dry mouth for the last day or so - I've been drinking water almost constantly in case it was a dehydration thing but I guess we can rule that out now. Is this symptomatic of anything common? The only other thing that's wrong is that I seem to be sneezing a lot more than usual, but I don't 'feel' ill.

Any help would be appreciated.

Are you on any medication right now?

There's a great deal of prescription medications(SSRIs spring immediately to mind) that'll give you this kind of side effect.

    Absolutely none.

Chances are that it's something trivial and will pass within the week. Try thicker foods like yogurt or smoothies as they'll tend to linger and so provide a longer lasting hydrative effect to the mouth than water would.

I'd suggest not consuming any dairy if your mouth feels dry. Try putting a pinch of salt and sugar in your water and stirring it up, or get a thing of Gatorade/Powerade/whatever. The sports drinks. Cheap ones work the same for this purpose.

It may not be the same as what you're going through, but I know there have been times where I'm really thirsty after doing a lot of physical labor or exercise, and I'll drink a lot of water and then just be thirsty and have to pee a lot. If I drink a thing of Gatorade, my thirst is quenched before the bottle is empty.

I'll grab some Powerade on the way home, I think, see if it does anything.

You mentioned sneezing. Is your nose stuffy or blocked? My first thought would just be a slight cold/stuffy nose, which is causing you to breath through your mouth, leading to the dry mouth.

Chewing gum might help your mouth produce more saliva.

Powerade seems to have done the trick. Not sure if this is a temporary solution or not, but thanks.

It's only the roof of my mouth at the back that's troubling me. I can swallow fine, and I don't have a blocked or stuffy nose.

Powerade worked short-term, but I still have a dryness in my throat. Currently chewing gum, and will yoghurt it up tomorrow lunch. I've a feeling this'll stop me getting to sleep easily tonight.

Thanks for all the help, though.

Lots of sugar in a powerade. At risk for diabetes at all?
peeing more than usual? extra hunger? losing weight?

Otherwise, monitor salt intake, get at least 3 liters a day of water (not soda). After that, see a doctor.

As someone who has the 'beetus, I was going to suggest that. A guy I work with was on some medication for his back the gave him a really dry mouth. He still gets it, but he's been off his meds for four months now so he's getting tested at his next doctor visit. He winced back a little when I showed him my insulin syringe and testing supplies. The fact that I test between 3 and 4 times a day really freaked him out.

Diabetes is actually really likely given my family history, but I have none of the other symptoms that I'd associate with it so I think I'm safe for the minute. I think it's more likely I'm just getting a cold - I woke up this morning and it was phlegm city.

I have this same problem, I find that if I have something that can coat my mouth like pudding or something it makes me produce more saliva and the dryness goes away for a bit. You can also try cleaning your tounge, I know that helps me sometimes as well.
