These Sisters of Battle were descended from the Emperor himself. Taught never to retreat, never to surrender. Taught that death in the battlefield is the greatest glory they could achieve in their life.

Sisters of Battle! The finest soldiers the universe has ever known!

THIS. IS. SOULSTORM!

Lulz What is this?
Soulstorm is the latest stand-alone expansion in the fantastic Dawn of War series. This installment was co-developed by Relic and Iron Lore Entertainment (which has now closed it's doors permanently). Before you get upset, Relic is in charge of patch develo--wait, why are you crying??!

Ahem, in any case, Soulstorm, like the other DoW expansions before it, brings alot of new shit to the table. 2 new races, the Sisters of Battle, womanly Space Marines, and the Dark Eldar, gothic Eldar types. Also, flying vehicles!

Stop laughing. I mean it.

Stop.

Also a new non-linear campaign of which nothing further will be said because that's not why we're here.

Races, Old and New
Tau: A relatively young race, the Tau are centred around the concept of "The Greater Good", a philosophy where personal gain is sacrificed in favour of benefitting the race as a whole. Technologically they are highly advanced, but as a young race they are somewhat naive to the vast dangers present in the universe.

Playstyle: Great ranged abilities, and some good close combat options make them potentially versatile. However they have a split technology system, where you can only specialise in one of those two paths in a game - getting your best ranged units, or getting your best close combat units. Ranged power comes expensive and is fragile, but its strength is second to none.

Summary: Anime style futuristic mecha with beastmen allies.

Necrons: An ancient race tricked into serving the C'tan, the Star Gods. They are bound within living metal bodies, unable to die, and forced to harvest the souls of the living for their masters to feed upon. Having remained dormant for millions of years, they are now being reawakened to a universe full of life - that they may once again exterminate the living.

Playstyle: They use a different economic system to everyone else, relying only on the Power resource. Slow to get going, but once they gather momentum they are very difficult to stop. What they lack in finesse, they make up for in staying power. The Necron Lord is the most powerful hero unit in the game, able to learn 3 powerful spells out of a selection. Most notable is the ability to mass resurrect fallen Necrons, easily turning the tide of a close battle. On top of that, most of their infantry has a set chance of automatically reassembling itself upon death, standing back up and rejoining the fight.

Summary: Undead metallic skeletons with weird ancient technologies. The silent army of the reaper that just won't die.

Imperial Guard: In a universe of advanced alien technology, 10 foot genetically engineered monsters and ruinous daemonic powers, the Imperial Guard are just... men. Carrying a puny lasgun and wearing a flak jacket, the Imperial Guard are forced to rely on numbers, combined arms, tactics and sheer courage to win their battles. The Guard is an organisation of billions of humans spread across the galaxy, the first line of humanity's defense.

Playstyle: Good defensive ability, but offensively weak until later in the game. Combined arms is the way to victory, using their excellent array of vehicles, officers and support weaponry to push the enemy back.

Summary: The average human planet's armed forces, with a good array of vehicles.

Space Marines: Genetically engineered superhumans, few in number but they are humanity's elite. Extremely zealous in their worship of the Emperor, they will hold their faith till death, and beyond.

Playstyle: Marines are very adaptable, with their ability to mix and match heavy weapons loadouts. A good army for a beginner to learn, they are kind of "good at everything". Later on they have the ability to Deepstrike - drop-pod or teleport units directly to a distant spot on the map, which is very powerful when used correctly.

Summary: Holy knights. In space. With guns and chain-swords.

Orks: A strange race of primitive green humanoids, the Orks live and die for one thing - the WAAAGH! Meaning war. But for Orks, the Waaagh is a strange psychic field generated by each Ork. As Orks enjoy themselves in battle, the field grows stronger. Thousands of Orks will gather, drawn to the Waaagh, and they will set off to find an enemy to fight, even if it's other Orks. Orks possess a bizarre junkyard technology, the power of their psychic field allows their weapons and vehicles to function just as well as the best built human weapons. The green tide of Orks lives only for fighting, and if they stopped fighting amongst themselves, they could soon wipe out most other races.

Playstyle: All their buildings have guns, making them good defensively when they need to be. Orks get a "mob bonus", the more population's worth of Orks there are in a clump, the stronger they will be (they become immune to morale and get a damage bonus). Apart from one or two notable exceptions, they are highly close-combat oriented.

Summary: Orcs, in space, an unending green tide of destruction. And hilarious voices.

Eldar: An ancient and long-lived race, the Eldar Empire once held the entire galaxy in their hand. Consumed by arrogance and with no need for substantial work or labour, they became decadent and devoted to seeking pleasure. The results of their corruption eventually caused the birth of a Chaos god, Slaanesh. This cataclysmic event killed the vast majority of Eldar, and what remains is essentially a refugee population, the scattered remnants of their former power. Even in such a condition, however, the Eldar are a force to be reckoned with. Their motives are often mysterious, and they will go to any lengths to achieve their goals, no matter the cost to the "lesser" races.

Playstyle: The Eldar rely on speed and stealth, with much of their army able to outrun their enemy. Most of their vehicles can jump over terrain, and they can use Webway Gates to instantly traverse large distances. They are also able to stealth-cloak their buildings, making them hard to pin down.

Summary: Elves in space (notice a pattern?). Fast, sneaky and stealthy, with a good dose of spells and abilities.

Chaos Space Marines: They once served the Emperor, but fell to the whispers and temptations of the dark Chaos Gods during the event known as the Horus Heresy. Their heresy has damned them all, but they have given themselves to it knowing this. They have gained daemonic powers and twisted new abilities, and enjoy nothing more than slaying those who serve the false Emperor.

Playstyle: More close-combat oriented than Space Marines, their most notable difference is the ability to gain stealth for their whole army of Chaos Marines. When used correctly, this can be devastating. They can be difficult to use, but are great fun.

Summary: Fallen knights devoted to EVIL. In spa- yeah, ok. Also big bloody DEMONS.

Dark Eldar: Twisted and corrupt cousins of the Eldar, these terrifying raiders from the furthest reaches of the Webway are feared and hated by all. Their incredible speed and reliance on close quarter combat, stunning and poisoning abilities allows them to quickly strike an enemy and be gone before reinforcements can arrive.

Summary: Some sorta emo-gothic fag race version of Chaos. Yeah so I didn't really play the Soulstorm demo much or at all so I don't have anything to put here until I've played them.

Sisters of Battle: The Chamber Militant of the Emperor ’s Holy Inquisition. Limited in numbers but incredibly powerful, the Sisters of Battle are second only to the Space Marines in terms of sheer fighting prowess. Ranging from the Sisters Repentia with their devastating ceremonial eviscerators to the awe-inspiring Penitent Engine, the Sisters of Battle are truly a power to be feared.

Summary: Pseudo-marines with tits. Space Marines have gotta do something with their downtime whilst not killing shit, right? Also see above.

Note: Credits for all old race descriptions go to Talous and Shujaa via previous DoW game on threads. DE & SoB descriptions from game spiel.

Playing Essentials
Soulstorm is a stand-alone expansion, so you don't need any of the other games to get involved, though you will only have access to the Sisters of Battle or the Dark Eldar in multiplayer modes. Obviously having the other games gives you access to the other races, vanilla DoW for Eldar, Orks, Space Marines, and Chaos, Winter Assault gives you Imperial Guard, and Dark Crusade lets you play with Necrons and Tau. Every game (Soulstorm included) is available via Steam if you're having trouble locating it.

In order to play with us, you'll need a few extras however;

Ventrilo: Not necessary, but strongly recommended. We use this to coordinate games, complain about bad maps, and general tomfoolery/drama. Get it even if you have no mic, because you can still listen in. PA Ventrilo details along with download links can be found here.

Hamachi: Required. Many players experience problems with Gamespy, as is always the case with poorly supported and integrated Gamespy browsers in most games these days, hence, we normally game via hamachi, only occasionally venturing into the black void of the webs to prey on those who are worse players than ourselves. Newer versions of Hamachi are owned by the evil Yahoo and compatibility suffers according to various reports, so stick with version 1.0.1.5, which can be found here. Channel is PADoWSS, password is the usual. If you don't know what the usual is, PM someone who seems to know.

Community Map Packs: Who knows what wondrous new maps Soulstorm will bring, but there are a lot of PA favorites to be found within the community map packs, so these are required for downloading. Find them here, but note, the installer is crap and will insist on installing to the wrong location no matter how you correct it. Track down where it places the files and place them correctly yourself.

Motivators!

I'm playing Dark Eldar for sure. Unless we get a rash of them, then I'll probably stick with IG.

    Dark Eldar Stuff:
    Journal Entry 234245.M33:

Tonight is Devilnacht, the darkest hour of the century when all the moons block the light of our star. As our fathers and our grandfathers have taught us, and their fore-fathers taught them since the colony was founded eighty generations ago, we have shuttered the windows, barred the gates, set guards and prepared our defences.

No-one has yet replied to our plea for help, and there are but scant few hours left before midnight. The soul-eaters will come, of that I am sure. Some scoff and say they are but tales told by drunken old men who wish to seem wise and foolish mothers who want to scare their children into obedience. But I know the truth. I spoke to Jeremiah before he died. He was there the last time they came, and his body still shook with fear in his heart.

I remember his words exactly, etched upon my memory by the rasping of his voice and the intensity of his stare. I know some thought him mad, senile in his antiquity, but they were not there to see him, to feel his hands gripping my arm so tight it went numb.

"Fear the darkness. Believe not the sanctity of light. Nothing stops them, not barred window nor locked door, not gunshot nor sword blow. No portal is closed to them and no mortal man can stand against them and live. Make your peace with the Emperor on Devilnacht's Eve, for you will not see All Saviors' Day.

Leave town… do not return, if you value your life."

I remembered then his harsh, racking laugh which degenerated into a hacking cough. His eyes turned so hard, like stone, and he pulled me close to whisper in my ear with his short-gasped voice.

"They don't just kill you. Some they slay, but others they take. They took Mia and Farah and John and Jeboh, and Garret and Felix and Belsta and all the others. Chains and whips, barbs and talons... Their screams haunt my sleep. Why did they spare me? I did not help them, I swear!"

He became fervent, adamantly denying any collusion with the Devils That Stalk Men. He slept for a while, but awoke just before dusk of Devilnacht's Eve. I was still there, I knew he would not live another night. The fever, the ravaging disease that somehow kept him alive to the grand age of six score years and ten was reaching it's end, devouring his body from the inside. He raved incoherently for a while and I bathed his brow in ewe's mild as Grandmother Fammi had taught me. He quieted and became lucid again.

"Be not here tomorrow eve! Go! Go away, far away! Hide, skulk, crawl on your belly through the dense tangle of forest if you must, but be not here when the Devils That Stalk Men come. Your soul will not see the Great Emperor, they will take it from his light and devour it for themselves. The pain of your soul will mirror the pain of your body. They feast upon fear, they drink your terror, they delight in you impotency to resist them. They will come and all will die or be taken. That is the way of these things. They don't just kill you! They don't just kill you..."

Then he passed away, his last words a mere rattle to show the passing of his soul to the Emperor. Now, it is near starset of Devilnacht and the moons grow large. Now I understand why Jeremiah was spared, when the cold wind grips me and I see the faces peering into the darkness on the point of hysterical terror.

He was truly spared, even given the gift of elongated life so that he might live to this day, and no further. He was a messenger. The Devils That Stalk Men want us to know. They want us to fear them.

And they will come, and they will kill us.

But they don't just kill you...

-Final Entry of Marenza Balthus of the Thangod Colony. Beta-Coplin XX1.
