Over the pass couple of days I've been thinking of starting a blog. What do you guys recommend for a blogging site and software to get started. I don't want it to be fancy, just have customizable themes and easy to use interface.

I use wordpress and am hosted by globat. They had wordpress as an auto install option which is why I picked it. Seems nice so far. I really have not gone far in to see how hard its going to be to edit it. I do like how easy it is to stick pictures in though. It just has a little upload thing at the bottom of the post window where you can upload the pictures you want to use in it and then it sets up all the links for you.

Well if you want a customizable website and without many restrictions, you could always just make your own website. This is what I did personally since I didn't really like the options available to me from various sites that were already mentioned and also: myspace, xanga, livejournal... etc. Now you might be saying to yourself "oh but I don't know how to code... or even where to get started." Well, neither did I when I started out, it really isn't that hard if you know how to google around a bit.

    How to get started:

    1) How are you going to code this? - Well some of my friends code with notepad; some people like me use applications. Personally I use Microsoft Frontpage (and I know some of you cringed when you read it). And if you google around you'll be able to find a lot of examples and tutorials on how to code. (or you could just go to a site you like the layout of and then go to "view -> view source code" if you are lazy and like ripping off code :P

    2) Finding a good web server - I used google and I found http://www.110mb.com/ , they are pretty good, tons of storage and bandwidth.

    3) Getting a domain - you can always buy your own domain like "www.fofamitiscool.com" or something or you can get a URL redirect for free. I personally use .co.cc for mine since it is ad free. A lot of people use .TK though.

    4) K.I.S.S. - Keep it simple, I personally hate websites cluttered with junk all over the place. I am sure others will appreciate it too.

5)Tips - to save on your bandwidth and allow your page to load fast don't clutter your file server with all of your images and so forth. I personally upload most of my photos imageshack.us and just place them on my page. You can do this for videos and basically most of your content. (youtube is also good).

I don't mean to generate traffic for my site or anything, I would just like to show my own personal blog as an example:

    www.joekimonline.co.cc

It isn't anything flashy and I am still working on it but yeah.
