The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
NIS America announced today that a new edition of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness will be released for the Nintendo DS. In order to fully utilize Nintendo DS's capabilities several key improvements will be made to the user interface and game system. Disgaea for the Nintendo DS will arrive in North America in the summer of 2008.
Disgaea's game system is simple yet addictive. It has the same basic concept as other strategy RPGs, but uses many unique features and enhancements that make this game unprecedented. The following are some of the special features of Disgaea DS:
* Geo Panels – A group of stat altering elemental properties that are placed upon certain parts of the battlefield. When there are one or more colored panels on the battle grid,it means an element can affect that area. The effect can boost or reduce your unit's
stats.
* Geo Cubes – A new addition to the PSP version, Geo Cubes are magic items that add
more depth to multiplayer battles. You can use the various Geo Cubes to enhance
your abilities, summon monsters, or even attack your enemies with them.
* Demon Gadgets – Randomly generated items that appear on the battlefield. By acquiring these gadgets, you can power‐up your units. Some demon gadgets can level
your unit up by 30 levels at once.
* Transmigration – A form of reincarnation that allows you to start over from level 1, but your unit will grow stronger than before.
While this is good news for DS-only owners ... that upper map is heinous and the main screen looks cluttered as hell. I was looking forward to a glut of SRPGs and tactical games on the DS, but I think a lot of developers would struggle with how to actually fit all of the data on the screens.
That said, with Disgaea and Etrian Odyssey now on the same system, I dub the Nintendo DS "The Grindstone."

I too was hoping for a ton of SRPGs on the DS, only to find a wide variety of "weird" games that don't easily fit a genre. They're fun, too, but I'm still looking for those SRPGs...
I played Phantom Hourglass on my DS most recently, but it's mostly been collecting dust.
The GBA was a fucking fantastic platform for sRPGs, and its been disappointing as to the huge amount of sRPG love the PSP has gotten compared to the DS.
This is a step in the right direction. :^:

I think a lot of it is due to trying to figure out how to display info and stats. I felt like Advance Wars: Dual Strike did an excellent job with keeping info readable and handy while also letting you move units easily with the stylus, although it was still too easy to accidentally mess up and move a unit in the wrong place or accept something you were trying to cancel out of. And you could also switch between stylus control and button control at will, which was great; other DS SRPGs, like Luminous Arc, locked you into one or the other and it was a hassle to flip.
But I think the DS's lower-res screens work against it with games like this: You either have to have plain-looking units to fit a lot on one screen (like in AW: DS), or more detailed units with a very zoomed-in camera angle (like the Disgaea screens above). With this I'd be moving the camera around like a fiend trying to see everything, and it still looks like everything's crammed on the bottom screen while the top has this amazingly sparse map.
honestly i kind of wish they made top and bottom screens switchable, so to move you bring up the map screen with the characters, and if you look at stats or choose to attack it swaps the map screen to the top and presents you with any info you need on the bottom screen...
Pretty sure they are. The originals wouldn't work if they were downscaled far enough to fit on the DS screen. These were probably redrawn for the DS, though obviously they're of poorer quality.
Because if the question is "Will you buy this for a third time?" the answer is no.
Yeah, Disgaea is neat and all but I bought it like 5 years ago. How about some new games?
I agree once was good. Twice was stretching it but alright. But three times? No you know what.. just no im not gonna get this again and go through it again.
I've said this every time this topic has come up in other forums: It's about time!
Now, I'm giddy mostly because I want Disgaea portable and I don't have a PSP. Plus, the DS is perfect for these type of games (though the use of the dual screen could have been better). It would be nice to see remakes of some of their older/newer stuff on the DS.
What I really want to see is some NIS games for the Wii.
I have to agree with the "bluh, port? nothx" sentiment. And I find the upper map screen to be ugly. I probably wont even so much as try it if they don't do something useful with it, like I don't know, moving some clutter up there? Its a small screen, you can't cram everything onto one. I mean afterall, that's why you have two, right?
Aww...who am I kidding, I'll probably pick it up cause I don't have the PSP version, and a portable Disgaea would keep me occupied for ages.

Agree. It's tough enough to see just what's going on in the PSP version, but that ugly-ass map screen seems like it'd be pretty handy. I love this game; I'll buy it once, I'll buy it twice, but I'm out on the third time.

Heh, that's exactly my sentiment as well. "Just a port", but then again it does have some new things, and I never played the PSP version, and I want to support NIS, and I just finished up the latest Advance Wars and need something new ... oh hell, I'll get it and love it.
Yeah, I'm not buying Disgaea for a 3rd time. Screw that. Rhapsody is cool. They better make sure the voices are clear though. I didn't think companies could really screw up voice volume and quality but Capcom sure proved me wrong with ZX Advent. The quality was just terrible. It was all tinny and low volume.
you know i'm thinking NI isn't really porting this for people who own the psp version, simple people like myself who only own a ds need disgaea portable love too

This is exactly why I said "Second time" and not "Third time". I need me some portable Disgaea.

They're also porting Rhapsody and one of N-1's weird puzzle games.
This is great news, Although I suspect it will be bad news for my other DS games as I doubt Disgaea will ever leave my DS
Where Madness and the Fantasical Come to Play

Uh, no.
Bout time NI started putting stuff out on a handheld/console that I actually own again.

if that makes sense
If so, I'll buy.

猿も木から落ちる
then i will not buy it again.

Awwww, lucky you. I want a new Disgaea experience.
*Golf claps*
Bring on the D2 port to the PSP you bastards!

I never asked for this!

I thought it had been announced it was a new game with a dif. title though? Must have misread it or been a rumor.

And there's no way this'll have all the polish and voice work of the PSP version.
Us PSP owners will still have something to claim, right?
This is the actual good news, people.
Then a second purchase should do me.
