I was thinking, thanks to a topic on the forum, about breaking out my sega stuff. I found a copy of my Ps2 version of Grandia 2. Plugging that game in, I forgot how much fun I had in that game. I brought it over to
my buddys house, and I told him I found a copy of Grandia 2. He had no clue what I was reffering to.
Does anyone play Grandia 2 anymore?
I remember that it came out for the Dreamcast at around the same time as Skies of Arcadia, and I only had enough money for one of them, so I bought Skies.
It was pretty good until around halfway through when they neutered the main character and turned him from a sarcastic badass to a lovestruck twit.
Gameplay was good the whole way through, though.
I'd argue that the whole thing went to crap around the 33%-50% point. Once you start getting all the AoE spells, they're all so cheap that every single battle except the bosses is "two characters cast AoE, other two mop up the remaining enemy," and with the HP/MP regen points all over the place, there's absolutely no reason not to.
I would like to add that the game has one of my favorite lines from anything, ever.
Ryuudo, to the "CLEANSE THE EVIL WITH FIRE" priestess: Well, well. Look what the slavish devotion to sanctimonious bloodshed dragged in. So, what brings you here...or did I answer myself?

Sure you could do that. But when you tried to play the game with poison/gravity spells and knowing when to block, battlefield controlling became more entertaining than going demoman on everyone.
It was a little cheap, tough, to know what attacks were the enemies going to use against you. Still it doesn't diminish the fact that the battle system was damn entertaining. Me and my little brother played replayed it a lot. He finished the game with all the skill books and mana eggs in like 30 hours.

The gameplay is amazing, even if you can abuse the AoE spells after a while. The bosses are still fun as shit, anyway.
The story and characters at about halfway turn into total shit. It's like someone takes the generic jrpg angst and pretension nob and turns it up to 11. No cliche' goes unused.

To be fair, at least part of the ending is different.
Just that he ends up with the demonic chick instead of the goody goody white mage.

That's funny...I always thought he got both...or maybe I just unlocked the pimp ending.

I think that's Skies of Arcadia. Which is awesome.
I don't remember him getting any anything at the end of Grandia 2, but I may have blocked it out from the pain.
I played it for the PC, it really is an underrated game. I never took to FFX and later, but Grandia 2 brings back the same fun feelings as the older Final Fantasies did.
The thing I will never forget about Grandia 2 is that FFX lifted its plot almost word for word and no one seemed to notice.

I picked up both Grandia II and Skies of Arcadia for Dreamcast back in the day.
Never got around to beating either, but I got way further in Grandia II, even when I pulled them back out and played them again a few years ago I must have only put an hour into SoA while my Grandia II save got maybe 5-6 hours of actual progress.
SoA's random battles and characters were just way too boring and generic for me, even for how much I was into console RPGs back then.

Hi5 PC players! It's probably the last jRPG I've actually played though, but it was pretty fun. Although there was an annoying crash bug at the end for me, so I had to play through the end fight about 5 times before I just moved to a different computer to see the ending. And yeah, I thought he got both in the end as well.
Having come off a PC RPG kick, when I played through the game on the DC I associated dagger users with rogues and kept wondering why Roan sucked so much at stabbing things. Wasn't until much later that I realized he was supposed to be a mage.
But lots of fun, though it did sometimes get annoying not knowing in advance which of the girls you would be using for a dungeon/boss.
I remember it had some shocking video stuttering though, but it was quite easy to dig out the .avis and cut off the stuttering parts. Kind of silly that they let that through.
I had grandia 2 and skies of arcadia for my beloved Dreamcast. I enjoyed them both, but I don't remember if I beat either of them. I remember getting fed up in Arcadia for the sheer amount of random battles, and the long load times associated with them, and I remember the most fun being ship battles, of which there weren't NEARLY enough of.
I re-bought Grandia for the PS2 some time after, I still have it, but haven't touched it in ages.
The Grandia series is one of my favorite RPG series. I saw Grandia "Extreeem!" or whatever it was called in a game shop not too long but was too broke to get it. It's basically Grandia 2 with different characters, right?

From what I know, Grandia Extreme is a dungeon crawler that basically uses and updated version of Grandia 2's battle system. The story is practically non existant, so if you don't like dungeon crawlers you probably wouldn't like it.
The thing I will never forget about Grandia 2 is that FFX lifted its plot almost word for word and no one seemed to notice.
So... it's about a jock who's transported to a strange new land that's being terrorized by a gigantic whale... thing?
Huh.
I got Grandia 2 for cheap just a few weeks ago. I’ll probably give it a shot in the next couple of weeks, since I hear the combat is awesome.
Actually, its about a jock transported to a stange land thats being attacked by a whale thing while hes trying to hook up with a virgin priestess and carrying a weapon that doesnt look like it can cut.Oh,and he has a low blood sugar,so he fades near the end.Fun game though.
Heh, I was just playing this again and didn't notice this thread until now. I got it originally for the Dreamcast but I wasn't that big a fan of it after I finished it. It was too short and really easy, if you want it to be difficult you actually have to force yourself to play it differently almost. Or at least not collect every item and fight every enemy. I'd have to say the plot isn't really anything spectacular, but the characters are all fairly well-developed, at least the PCs. The main villain, probably not so much. Plus there is a lot of vagueness and nonsensicality about the way things worked. Although right now I've been playing without sound but I think that everything important gets text anyway. Ryudo is definitely my favorite character of any of the Grandia games though, he's such a magnificent bastard most of the way through. Good ending too, now that I'm thinking about it.
Grandia's battle system has always been great, but I'd have to say Grandia 3's is better. Or possibly it's just the game integrating the battle system better with what enemies actually throw at you, considering you have to make use of cancels a lot more in order to survive. The characters aren't nearly as interesting though, but the plot's actually really similar, not specifically but in a more general sense, sort of the same thing with the first one. The first one probably had the best actual plot, though I haven't played that one in a long time. I just skipped Extreme because that looked really stupid.
Another problem with it is that it is really linear, there's only ever one sidequest you can do and it's just one small dungeon with like one new enemy. It also follows a distinct pattern of town>dungeon>other dungeon with boss>town throughout most of the game.
Also, Skies of Arcadia has been mentioned. I bought that too when it came out and didn't really like it that much, mainly because of the too frequent random battles which all took way too long, and then the immensely grueling ship battles. I never did finish that version. But I did pick up the Gamecube version and beat that one much later. As far as I can tell, they fixed up the random battle issues and made the special moves skippable, although they didn't do much for the ship battles. But I'd recommend it for anyone who passed on it or didn't like the Dreamcast version.

The combat engine in the game is more or less perfect, not to mention the upgrade system.

Still like the original more though, but it was a favorite.
So one of those lucky folks that has already played 13 huh? Heh sorry for being an ass.

I really need to stop buying games for the sake of buying games.

Grandia 2 Extreme or whatever was. Grandia 2, the Dreamcast original, was brilliant. Best RPG combat system I know of.

I remember being really impressed by the voice acting. Was it one of the first jrpgs to have it?
Epic Fail on the thread's name, though.

It's also the last Grandia game that came out before Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Coincidence? I think not.
I prefer the faster combat and cheesier plot of Grandia II to Grandia.
Grandia II's plot is like a perfect hot out of the oven slice of plain pizza. It just works.
