Since a large portion of this forum seems to go on with (largely unjustified) hate on NeoGAF, I suppose I'll be the one to pull up this news that seems to have escaped notice for a good while.
Yup, Valkyrie Profile: The Accused One, AKA Valkyrie Profile DS has been announced.
Developer: tri-Ace
Genre: RPG
You take control of Wilfred, a young silver-haired protagonist who's pissed off at the Gods for some reason, so he goes on a journey of vengeance. He's given a special feather from Hel which apparently is supposed to help him in his quest. Also, it appears to chronologically take place before VP:L, although given the shitstorm that occurred in VP:S, who knows anymore.
Based on the single scan we've seen, it's an isometric view. However, it was a cutscene, so maybe thnigs change in actual gameplay. Who knows.
You know, I've never actually played any of them, and the only one I have access to is the one on PS2. Is it worth it without having played the others?

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.

The PS2 VP is definitely a "rent before you buy" kinda game. I'm glad we did; both my spouse and I HATED the combat system. Some people love it. I can't speak for the mythology or the story, since we didn't get far enough to see much of it.

Want to find me on a gaming service? I'm SwashbucklerXX everywhere.
I'm surprised it took this long for someone to mention it. I was going to revive the "Japanese" thread but I'd prefer it if one of KA's atrocities died...
Anyway, I'll probably buy it simply because I'll be worried that I won't be able to find it in a few years without a ridiculous price attached to it. But then I'll never actually get around to playing it, kind of like the last two... There are just way too many RPG's sitting on my shelf that I'd prefer to play if I got the time, like Persona 3 and Rogue Galaxy.
I am however interested in how Tri-Ace is managing to develop three games simultaneously. They've got Infinite Undiscovery halfway through development, they've announced Star Ocean IV (which is apparently a PS3 game by the VP2: Silmeria team) and now they've got this. Plus they're overseeing the PSP remakes of Star Ocean I and II, though I'm guessing TOSE is doing most of the work on them. They must've expanded a lot over the last few years.
Wasn't expecting this at all. At least not so soon. I guess it's nice we're not waiting 6.5 years for another game though.
Will have to know how it plays considering it seems to be isometric. I trust tri-Ace to get some good gameplay going so it's not much of a worry.
Storywise, I just hope Lucian is a part of this one with Lenneth. After all that went down in the A ending of VP1 they deserve some time with each other. VP2's ending made me go "What?! But what does this mean to VP1's A ending? What about Lucian? What?!"
Hmm. I'm wondering how they'd utilise the dual-screen, or even the touch-screen (probably not).
...
It's not possible that they misspelled 'accursed', did they?
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. For my money, the single best RPG on the PS2. And that's saying a lot, considering how asstastic the story is.
... oh.
Well, I'm kinda only interested in the story, since I love Norse mythology, and I heard the first one was surprisingly faithful.
If you're interested in and know a thing a two already about Norse Mythology at all, stay as far away from Valkyrie Profile as you possibly can. A friend of mine who actually knows quite a bit about norse mythology(More so than me at any rate) couldn't stop bitching about how much they butchered it when I loaned him my copy of VP for PS1.
You'd think a story about the norse apocalypse would have to end sometime.
I guess that's why they're setting it before VP1, when Ragnarok is actually going down.
Which leads me to wonder what time travelling hijinks they're going to be pulling this time.... oh man.

Actually, the way Norse Mythology works, Ragnarok already happened by the time humans rose to power. The world had been destroyed, all the god and Frost Giants killed, etc etc. It's one of those strange mythologies that doesn't really start until after the world is already reduced to a charred ruin.
That said, yeah, Silmeria... you could have done without introducing time travel paradoxes.

Dude yes. The VP series rules. I am so siked on this game.
Oh, i played VP1 when it came out and liked a few things about it (story, combat, side-scrolling parts), but absolutely hated other things (breakable weapons, the having to give back awesome items system, breakable weapons, time limits, BREAKABLE WEAPONS)
That said, after seeing VP2 in action I'd like to give it a shot eventually. And I might pick this new one up since the DS is depressingly lacking in RPGs.

God, I loved VP2's combat system, but I had to pack it away when we moved house and I never picked it up again. VP1 was great except for the long unskippable story sequences.

Breakable weapons are optional. They are slightly better, but you always have a non-breakable weapon from Materialize Points to use if they all break. I'm usually swimming in breakable weapons.
You don't have to give back any item in the game. Ever. However, a lot of the artifacts aren't too useful. It is a game you might have to use a guide for if you're a completionist.
The turn (time) limit is never important. I usually go to all the dungeons in a chapter, then rest for the remaining 40% of turns. If you want to go back and farm monsters for experience, I suggest you re-evaluate using the Experience Orb for that. Grinding is never required in the game. Just set up your tactics better. You never ever run out of turns to do everything and then some.
I laugh at people who hate these concepts, as it seems like they have little understanding of the game's mechanics.

High five. The only breakables I ever touched were the Slayer items. The rest are useless or only barely more useful when compared to their unbreakable compatriots. The game really isn't that difficult once you understand how things work. Yeah, that 1 hit weapon does twice as much damage as the 3 hit, but... oh yeah, you get 3 hits... and on some people that means even more hits. And Lenneth with a bow effectively does double damage over Lenneth with a sword. Simple stuff like that.

its more likely than you think!
Yeah, well, then VP2 probably isn't for you. But VP1 (available on PSP) is a good choice!

If they could have cleaned up the fighting it would have been much cooler. It's certainly worth a try tho.
HATED the PS1 game. Jesus, TALKTALKTALKTALKTALKTALK.
Still, more VP. Hell yes.
Did you, like, make it past the FIRST cutscene? After that, there's almost no more story until halfway through the game.
Let 'em eat fucking pineapples!
Yes, I did. And no, there's LOTS more story, even in the first mission. That annoying little princess bitch ARGH I CAN STILL HEAR HER

One person I know refers to the villain of VP2 as Dr. Who.
I don't think I can take another time travel paradox from VP. I just got through Shadow Hearts: Covenant and the ending wasn't too satisfying.

Only real complaint about the game is how broken the final boss fight is.
