On IGN's (yes, yes ign sucks) main page, there's a short article showing Unreal Tournament's sold over 1million copies now, there's also a link to a PA comic!
I think this is good news, I really enjoyed UT3, but didn't give it as much time as I should have. And last I heard this game was selling disappointingly, some blamed this on piracy. Whatever the case, it's nice to see the game is finally coming around.
Yeah, it's both platforms. The article that IGN links to says:
# Unreal Tournament 3 for the PC and the PS3, have now shipped over a million units total. While it may seem the PC market is slowing as indicated by NPD sales for this title. That is not the case internationally, where PC sales continues strong in a number of markets."
# "As we expected our European PC sales of Unreal Tournament 3 are outpacing North America and overall the title is turning out to a success."
# "The PC in general as you know performs over-performs relative to US and Europe, and we saw PC titles like Hour of Victory and certainly Unreal Tournament for the PC has performed better percentage wise in Europe than in the US."
# "Later this year, we are scheduled to launch the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3 and expect it to perform equally well. We set a number of goal, I’m sorry we set a goal a number of years back to grow our European sales to be on par with the rest of the publishers in the industry and we have exceeded that in a faster timeframe than we expected."
Big-budget game hits 1 million worldwide mark five months after launch? That's, uh, not particularly good, for the amount of cash they sunk into the thing.
Didn't Gears of War go through a million worldwide in like a month or two?
I can understand why the PS3. There is no other Unreal Tournament on there. On the other hand, PCs already have Unreal Tournament 3; it's called Unreal Tournament 2004.

I think it's good just because people were wondering if it was going to even hit that plateau at all, so it's nice that they did, even if it's 5 months late. And if history is any indication, they'll make back the money spent, and then some, just by licensing the UT3 engine, like they always do.

It's also the only mouse-enabled game currently offered.
I was hoping UTIII would sell like crazy on the PS3 and usher in the mouse as a must-have option. Sadly, that is not the case. At least, not yet.
Say what you will about controller FPSes, but coming from the PC world and moving to the PS3, I just can't get comfortable without mouse aiming. It's like trying to write with my left hand. And I'm not left handed.
But good for Epic. Their franchises tend to have longer legs than most, given how much support they give modders. Even though the core game may be the same old thing warmed over, I'd buy it just for the mods.

ps3 can support mouse input? Why was I not informed?
I'm the same as you though, I can't adjust to controller fps the same way as keyboard+mouse combo...
Wha....what?? I thought everyone had pronounced UT3 a dud, saying it came out at a poor time, yadda, yadda - 1 million is no COD4, but I'm sure they made bank selling 1 million.

It's not too great for a console title, especially one that should have a lot of name recognition behind it. Then you consider the fact that this is combined sales across PC and PS3, and I have to wonder how much it actually sold on each. Less than a million units on the PS3 isn't too great, not necessarily bad, but not too great. And on the PC side? The platform where the game has traditional made its home? I think they were expecting more than this.
I think Epic were expecting it to sell a lot better than it ended up doing. But speaking as someone who actually bought the game on release, I can't say I'm surprised that it didn't do better.
I gotta admit after the greatness of 2K4, 3 didn't really do it for me. It was almost exactly the same except they changed some of the best parts and made them worse. For shame Epic.
Every time we have a lolpc thread another so called dud game announces a million sold... same with Cysis and now this. Keep those retarded threads coming!
MistaCreepy on
PS3: MistaCreepy::Steam: MistaCreepy::360: Dead and I don't feel like paying to fix it.
I bought the game a few days after release and haven't really played it that much (PC)...but the same thing happened with UT2k4 although it did last a little longer. Then I picked it up a few years later and pack on those wonderful mods and it lasted years! Im hoping the same with UT3

To be fair, Unreal Tournament 3 is still a shitty game no matter how much it sold.

The game was cool to me... I was never really an Unreal person myself so it all seemed fairly new to me. But after picking up the anthology for 20 bucks and playing 2k4 I agree that UT3 is pretty much the same game with graphical upgrades.

So how is it that UT3 is pretty good on the PS3 yet everyone is saying the U3 engine has a lot of trouble on the PS3?
Because it took the creators of Unreal Engine 3 themselves to make a passable, bug free, smooth running game using the engine on PS3. And it took them 2 years.

I hated playing FPSes on the PS2 but loved them on the Xbox. I don't know if this was because nothing else was available (olol) on the Xbox or what. I mean part of it is the way the thumbsticks are positioned. Also I like the fact that I'm not getting head shotted from 500 yards away the moment I spawn when I play console FPSes. While I appreciate the increased accuracy of a mouse I hate using the keyboard and I find some benefit to my play experience from not having such finite aim.

It's just because the Playstation controller is (and has always been) so awful. Can't stand the damn thing. Tiny, awkward, cheap piece of plastic.

My zombie survival life simulator They Don't Sleep is out now on Steam if you want to check it out.
It was almost exactly the same except they fixed all of the worst parts and made them not suck anymore.
Fixed.
The Assault gametype would like to have a few words with you.
With his minigun.
I miss the Assault Gametype a LOT.
I was never a huge fan of the assault game type myself. I loved the onslaught, however I much prefer VCTF in UT3 and I don't play the onslaught as much. I think it's because this game feels so much faster then older versions of the game

They probably already have made a bunch off it, given the huge amount of AAA titles released on the engine before UT3 even came out.
So a map pack was released today, with remakes of Facing Worlds and Morbias and one new CTF map called Searchlight. They look pretty keen, but I haven't played 'em much yet.

...Sorry. It had to be said, can't have a thread without it.
Still snazzy that it sold that many. Not quite the flop it's often made out to be, really.

But not really an Epic success, either.

Facing Worlds? Goddamnit, now there's going to be tons of "FACE 24/7" servers. Thanks.
