Join the PAX Volunteer Enforcer Staff! [old]

Robert KhooRobert Khoo Registered User, ClubPA staff
edited March 2007 in PAX Archive
As you've probably heard, PAX is getting bigger, meaning the manpower required to pull it off increases as well. Our Enforcer staff, a community in its own right, is looking for some hard working individuals to join their ranks.

Some requirements we ask for are:

- Be 18 or older
- You're able to actually attend PAX
- You actually want to help

What's in it for you? Well besides a super sweet black long sleeve t-shirt, you also get free entrance to the show... cookies... soda...some free stuff... but c'mon, let's be realistic. If you're in it for the material benefits this job probably isn't for you. You'll be running around and helping out for most of the show, no doubt dehydrated and sleep deprived, praying to god someone doesn't try to jump off the 4th floor.

But you know what? It's still super fun. Tired, battered and a bit delirious, the end of the show is one of the most satisfying experiences for those that are part of making it happen, and we crave it, year after year.

If you're interested please email the following app to PRD (klindsay@penny-arcade.com), who is our Enforcer Wrangler Supreme. Thanks!

-robert

You are assigned certian shifts, so you still get pax time to to walk around. unless you are me, and your shift is 5+ days long. But I loves it.

    Okay okay.

Actually, we spend most of our time relaxing in the staff hot tub, sipping peach tea and test-playing pre-release titles. Occasionally the ice cream ladies come by with baskets of treats. Our staff motto is "Idle and Utopia".

    What Enforcers Really Do

(A Statement of Complete Honesty by PRD)

Successful applicants will be directed to our private forum, which is filled with useful information, embarrassing photos, UR MOM jokes and eventually hardcore PAX Staff scheduling. We socialise jovially online until an as-yet unannounced date during the summer, when we hold a Meet and Greet, where local Enforcers socialise jovially in person.

Enforcers let me know their preferred area of employment and possible shifts, and I try to work that in as well as I can to the schedule.

PAX Set-Up begins on Thursday, Aug. 24th. Any Enforcers available to help out will be invited over to the Meydenbauer for an exciting day of pushing carts around, unloading boxes, setting up consoles/computers/tables/signs/etc. The situation is much the same on Friday morning.

On Friday afternoon, the doors open to the public. Chaos ensues. Enforcers perform tasks as directed by their area managers. Most of these tasks are Customer Service in nature. The areas this year are broken down as follows:

    Registration
    Console Tournament
    Console Freeplay
    PC
Table Top (at the Red Lion)
    Large Theatre (Concert Hall)
    Satellite Theatre
    Wireless Lounge
    Omegatechs
    Exhibition Hall
    Prize Redemption
    Security

Enforcers are asked to work at least one 6-hour shift per day (Fri, Sat, Sunday) where possible. They don't all have to be in the same area. Most Enforcers volunteer for two shifts, and sometimes more but we try to avoid grinding them into the ground. I'm not making any Peach Tea jokes here... we work you hard. An underground supply of BAWLS and energy bars keeps many Enforcers fueled for the weekend.

On Monday, when we all wish we were sleeping, we come back to strike the con. This involves a whole lot of boxing things up, rooting through leftover swag bags to keep the cool stuff and having cart races in the Exhibition Room (not that this has ever happened, I swear, Officer).

Enforcers get a free weekend pass to PAX, a swanky black shirt, unmeasurable cred, and the warm fuzzy glow of knowing that PAX wouldn't happen without them, and the PA Crew is forever grateful to have them around.

Enforcers are a real brotherhood. Our forum is active year round, and many of us choose to hang out together on a regular basis. We also draw our Child's Play volunteers from the Enforcers, and occasionally the PA Crew will send us on secret missions.

Does that sell the job to you? If so, swing me an app and see if you have what it takes to put on the Black.

Eighteen or older? Oh, I thought the age was older than that. I was thinking of volunteering before, but I could've sworn that I read something before that said the age was higher.

    Oh well, back to considering.

I'm completely new to this convention thing, so I figure volunteering will be a good way to learn about conventions.

The expo runs from August 25 to 27. When do volunteers need to show up? If I can get there earlier, will there be setup / tear-down work for me to do?

What kinds of work will volunteers be asked to do? Is it all heavy lifting and people moving? I'd hate to show up in business formal attire and be asked to crawl around on my hands and knees; or show up in t-shirt and jeans and be asked to assist a vendor or help move people around.

(I figure the what-not-to-bring list applies to attendees, not volunteers, but common sense still tells me it might not be a good idea to bring business formal type clothing with me. Unless I hear different here, that is.)

Edit: oops, answer was posted while question was still being written.

It's not all heavy lifting, no worries. While we certainly do have our fair share of cumbersome items to shift around, there is also plenty more for people to do that doesn't involve the grunting and hefting of weighty things.

No formal clothing required, we only trot that gear out for Child's Play. :)

    Thanks for the replies.

Who produces those PAX DVDs? Do you guys hire a video production firm, or is that a volunteer task as well? I can bring some portable video production gear and surrender all my footage to PAX staff at the end.

What kind of computer-y help can volunteers provide? While DEFCON this ain't, I'm sure there will be attendees who attempt to abuse the con's Internet connection or other attendees' computers. Does the con already have that handled?

The video production team is a professional contractor, so no need for any volunteer equipment. The PC Room is also contracted out. However, this year we'll be running our own Wireless Lounge, which is a first for us and will likely require quite a few technical brains. :)

Well, I'm thinking about it. How much time do I have to decide? I'll be 18 in May, so that isn't a problem. Plus, I'm local. Edmonds is only about 45 minutes away with average traffic. Do I get any time to get some swag at the Exhibition Hall? The free stuff is one of my favorite parts.

You will have time away from work to check stuff out during the event for sure. As to how long you have to decide, the sooner the better.

A month ago, I was seriously considering being an Enforcer. Now I think I'll be a bit preoccupied during PAX, so it may not be the best idea. Although I won't be up for volunteering, myself and PolaGo will bring you guys cookies if you want ^^ (This includes you too Khoo and PRD)

Besides, at 5'0" in height, what could I enforce aside from the Stoat Check??? :P

I will never say no to cookies. That being said most "Enforcing" is really just glorified customer service, helping vendors, guests and paxgoers find what they need and when. Keeping the various rooms running smoothly so that everyone gets to enjoy their time at PAX. Our one of our main goals is to be as friendly and helpful as possible so we can make PAX as successful as possible.

Yep ^^ I work in customer service, I know how it is :P

That said, PAX will effectively take up half of my meagre summer break, since I have to take a summer semester of school (pediatrics wooo), so I'll really want time to relax and not have to worry about anything.

And that is why we work our asses off, I mean other than the fact that the whole PA group is what I consider cool people. Really it's awesome when the whole thing is over and the haze is still there and you think to yourself, "damn I can't wait till next year!", that is one of the things I work for.

Mostly likely the crew is really busy right now (and for the next month) due to all the cons going on. Give it some time, theres still 6 months to pax.

Safe bet is to pre-reg. If your soul gets sold into enforcer servitude the pre-reg will be refunded at the event.
