Basically my main question is as follows: would it be feasible for a college student to move to Long Island and be able to afford the cost of living with a full-time job?
Full story:
I'm looking to move to Long Island at the end of this semester. (mid-June) I've visited twice, and I'm completely in love with the area. I know it's painfully expensive.
My lease is up July 1, so I have a lot of planning time, I just have no idea where to start.
Basically, I need:
-A place to sleep
-A job (full or part-time, as long as i can afford it)
If you have any suggestions at all, I'd love to hear any of them. I'm headed off to work for now, and I'll check this thread as soon as I get back. Thanks in advance for all your help!
Hey, sorry I didn't catch this much earlier. Been an LI native my entire life so here's some info.
The cost of living is very much going to depend on the area. You could easily get by in some of the seedier areas of, say, Nassau County, but you'd also be living in some of the seedier areas of Nassau County.
I live in Suffolk, near MacArthur Airport, in a nice one-bedroom apartment and our rent is $1300/month plus utilities. Then you've got to worry about things such as food, car insurance, gas, etc. The closer you get to the really affluent areas of the Island, of course, the more expensive everything tends to get.
Your best bet for cheap living would be to look around the crappier neighborhoods or for apartments near colleges. As far as work, I really don't think there's a shortage of jobs around. Considering you're going to be coming in the summer, they'll be plenty of restaurant-type jobs available as this is when business really takes off.
Let me know if there's anything more specific you'd like to know. I can also provide you with some excellent locations to spend a good-weather afternoon or grab a bite.
