Me and the Girlfriend are moving to Amhurst, we are getting our first place togeather (although have been living on campus and living togeather for some time)

anyway, not the ponit.

I just got a 47in phillips 1080p LCD, which has a pretty nice picture, slightly light blacks, but better than a lot that i looked at, and it was pretty cheap at $1400 with a 2 year warrenty from costco.

with our new place we will have the room for a proper set up (now im in a dorm room sized pod just off campus) so we are looking at speakers. neither of us know much about them, but we do know that we dont want to spend too much money, just enough to get us above using the TV speakers. i know i'll need to get a good reciever, which ive found a pretty nice one. has 2 HDMI inputs and an HDMI output. which if im right, means i can put my PS3 and 360 into the reciever then another HDMI into the TV then put Stereo and cable box cables into the reciver and have everything in my surround sound set up. correct me if im wrong. anyway thats going to cost about $300.

we arnt too picky about sound quality, anything will be better than the TV speakers, we just want that nice atmosphere you get with surround sound, and later in 6 or so years after i have been working a good 5 years in my field i'll get something proper.

anyway at this point i just need suggestions. is there a big difference between 5.1 systems (Which is what we want to get) that come with those DVD players (which we would sell as we dont want/need it) and just getting speakers? is there a good place where i can buy pretty cheap speakers that are fairly decent without the DVD reciever bundled (so we can spend more on the quality of the speakers and not worry about paying for a DVD player we dont want/need)

thanks in advanced, im completely new to this, and tech sites that i have checked out like IGN make it sound like if i dont have a $4000 system its not worth getting one, which is no help to those of us that can afford these kinds of systems but still would like to enjoy better than what we have.

Edit: I fogot to mention that im hoping to spend only $150 on the speakers, so on the low end. at max $200 if it will make a big difference in quality. remember 5.1 speakers.

Have you already purchased your receiver? If not, a home theatre in a box setup, or HTiB, might be up your ally.

You can also get home theater in a box w/o a receiver. Just the speaker setup. That's what I did, and I'm very happy with the speakers. Cnet reviews these as "Surround Speaker Systems," and I ended up with the Onkyo HT 240 set. Find something in your price range and check out the reviews on it. Most smaller systems do not "scale up" well, which means they're ideal for apartments or smaller living rooms, but are less useful if you end up in, say, a 25x50 vaulted ceiling living room in the future. Which probably won't be an issue.

Anyway, prices are cheap on Amazon and other online stores -- much more than in local stores, most likely -- and if you've already got the receiver, and you're just looking for inexpensive surround sound, the systems are the way to go.

Onkyo constantly gets good reviews in the "best bang for your buck" category

ive yet to get a receiver i just had one in mind, most of these "home theaters in a box" that ive seen all come with that DVD player i was talking about, and without a reciever i cant hook up a bunch of stuff. is there a special name for these so i dont have to weed through millions of DVD players that happen to allow surround sound speakers directly connected?

    thanks for the help.

and yes your right it'll be a while before we have an actual home, and when we do we'll upgrade then. thanks again.
