Now, I have a computer running XP. I want to upgrade to Vista but I want to completely reformat the computer before I do. If I buy the Vista upgrade, do I have to have XP installed before I can install Vista? Am I going to have to constantly keep my XP cd with me at all times?
So I can buy the upgrade, install it on my fresh computer, and just put the XP cd when it asks so that it knows I have XP?
No this does not work with Vista. Install Vista don't put in the CD-Key. You will get a 30 day trial. Boot into Vista launch the Vista installer in the just installed Vista, enter the CD-Key. It will re-install Vista. Delete the old Vista install usually called windows.old or something like that.
You may end up regretting the decision to change over to Vista, so I have two words for you:
Dual boot.
Ehhh, I'm using Vista on my laptop right now. I dunno, I really like it. I especially like how I can install a piece of hardware into my laptop and it just works.
Plus I'm finishing school in a couple of weeks. I can get vista upgrade for cheap.

How about this. Say I reformat my computer. There is nothing on there. I put in the Vista upgrade cd. What happens then?
If it works like the old windows upgrade CDs (95, 98, XP), it will ask you to put in your XP disc to verify you own it.
