So for my final project in my Stage Makeup class (shut up), I need to dye my hair dark green. The caveat being that it can't be a permanent thing (I don't want to walk around with green hair for the rest of the semester). I was wondering anyone out here might have some advice when it comes to dying hair; methods; dye brands; do(s) and do not(s); etc.

If it helps, this is the subject of my final (we get to choose our own thing to do, so long as it combines two or more of the styles we've learned thus far):

    Man, stage makeup is awesome.

What color is your normal hair color? Are you willing to bleach it?

Yes, normal hair colour's somewhat important as it usually determines whether you require bleach or not. I get my hair dyed dark blue every few months at a local hairdresser, and it's non-permanent as it will fade, though this usually takes (if you take care of it, which you indicated you don't want to) 2-3 months. You might be able to ask them to get some even shorter lasting dye or see whether they could do it without bleach so the colour doesn't attach as strongly, but I'm not sure whether that would affect how well the initial dye job turns out.

Is your hair normally as long as the picture or are you growing it out for the project as well? You could always dye it regularly then go back to a hairdresser in a month-two and cut it short thus taking off most of the dye.

I would go to Hot Topic. They usually have a nice darker green and it will wash out in 2-3 weeks and is only about $10. Since your blond it will show up great.

I had girl friends in high school that would dye their hair with kool-aid for shit like plays and pep rallies. They'd mix it up (not like dunking their heads in a pitcher of kool-aid, more like making it into a paste or something) until they got the color they wanted, and it'd wash out within a week....shorter if they shampoo'd the hell out of it.

Yea I've seen the kool-aid trick done countless times before. It works okay, but the color tends to be a bit weaker than professional dyes.

Kool-Aid will not give you the effect you want.
Do you have any friends who might be able to help? Ask your female friends, you might be surprised who has experience. Even if no one has done it before, get an extra set of hands.
Let the dye sit in your hair for like, an hour, more if you can. It will still wash out, but it will hopefully last longer and be more vibrant. When you wash out the excess dye, use very little shampoo, you don't want to strip the color out too soon. Also, don't use very hot water.
    Condition, definitly condition.

Manic Panic is a reputable semi-permanant brand.

It looks like you don't need to bleach, which is nice.

So... what techniques are you incorperating? My final was James Dean.

Manic Panic works well, but it will fade and make your hair almost a grey color after about a month. I ended up shaving my head to start fresh.

From my girlfriend who is a makeup artist and stylist...

Manic Panic Electric Green (she thinks thats it's name). Make sure it's all in. Leave in for an hour and a half, then blow dry. Wash it out with cool water and a LITTLE bit of conditioner, NO shampoo. Repeat if needed.

Normally I'd advise against manic panic, but since it's short term it's okay. It washes out quicker than most of the dyes, but you will most likely have to re-dye your hair at some point if you want it to go back to it's normal color.

When you put in the color in your hair in streaks, put tinfoil around it to help the color set in, and if you feel like it run a blow dryer over it. Also, when you wash out the dye completely, use a deep conditioner packet (they're usually like $1-$2 at Sally's) to help protect your hair.

As far as extremely temporary... don't they make some sort of spray on coloring that will wash out the next time you take a shower? Back in my high school days I know some people had a purple colored one that they could spray on and it would be gone the next day. I have no clue what exactly the product was called though. :(

That stuff isn't very good. Your hair gets all crusty and crappy looking, but in color!

That could be a good thing depending on what character this is for though, right?
