A few friends and I are heading to Chicago in a few weeks for a weekend trip. The only problem is that none of us have been to Chicago in about six or seven years. I know there are a few forumers out of there, so I just wanted to ask a few questions:
1) Where's a good hotel that won't gore my wallet for too much a night, but is still in a safe part of town? We're planning on attending a few Cubs games, so something that can get us close to Wrigley and shopping would be nice.
2) Are there any good anime stores in Chicago? I'm looking for a place that handles both American stuff and imports, mostly because I'll finally have some cash to pick up some new stuff.
3) There are two options we have for getting there- hop on the Amtrak train and go by train, or pile into a car and drive there. Is it really wise to drive to Chicago? I've heard the traffic can be seizure-inducing.
Travel depends on how long you're staying and what you're going to be doing there. I'm not a fan of Amtrak, so when we go to Chicago we drive. The problem that presents is of course parking. Ultimately it just comes down to money. Look at how much an Amtrak ticket is going to cost, and compare that with what you'll be paying for parking/gas for the same trip. If there are a bunch of you it might make sense to drive (I just checked and a round trip from Ann Arbor to Chicago is almost $80/person). Of course we also have friends in the suburbs, so it helps to have a car when we visit.
We were there in February and got a good price on the Holiday Inn downtown (at Merchandise Mart) from Priceline's name your own price. Really depends on what you consider a good price I guess, but it was around $70/night and we were right by public transit.
Edit: Depending on where you live you could look into taking the Megabus. If you're near Detroit and/or Ann Arbor at least I know it stops. Since you have a couple of weeks still tickets should be cheap. And in my experience Amtrak really isn't that much better than a bus.
You're going to pay an arm and a leg for parking downtown. You are probably better of getting a decent deal on a hotel and hopping a cab from the train station.
If not, there is pretty decent public transportation, and hotels in the suburbs are cheap, so you can always get a hotel outside of the city and hop a train downtown every day.

You can find parking downtown for less than $30/day (most likely at your hotel). Depending on how many people are going and would otherwise need to buy $70-80 Amtrak tickets this could end up being cheaper.
If Amtrack is too expensive for you, and you don't want to bother with the traffic/parking, I might suggesting driving to a suburb and taking the Metra into downtown. Depending on where you park it could be very inexpensive, and metra tickets are about $5.50 (or $4.50, I forget) one way, or $5.00 for a weekend pass. Here's the Metra website if you're interested in that. http://metrarail.com/
