What Is That? Twitter!

First a video of how to use twitter and the benefits of twitter versus myspace, facebook and blogging: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYHUOESHpVk

And the twitter wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter

Twitter in general (straight from wiki):
Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send "updates" (or "tweets"; text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) to the Twitter website, via short message service (e.g. on a cell phone), instant messaging, or a third-party application such as Twitterrific or Facebook.

Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and instantly delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. The sender can restrict delivery to those in his or her circle of friends (delivery to everyone is the default). Users can receive updates via the Twitter website, instant messaging, SMS, RSS, email or through an application. For SMS, four gateway numbers are currently available: short codes for the USA, Canada, and India, as well as a UK number for international use. Several third parties offer posting and receiving updates via email.

Penny arcade and twitter:
Before I get started - let me say that I’m still new to it as a medium. I’m in a phase of experimenting and finding my voice. But I do think it's a very cool way to keep in touch. I have a feeling not to many people here are using twitter and the people who are on it and are experienced with it would enjoy having other members from the penny arcade forum on twitter with them. I was thinking we could all learn it together and help each other out.

So lets use this thread to talk about or experiences getting on twitter, to exchange home pages and accounts and to help each other out!

(I have been with penny arcade for a very long time and this is my new thread postif i have done anything wrong please just let me know. But I searched for and could not find a thread so i thought it would make a good first thread for me, thanks!

So hit me up on twitter! http://twitter.com/thenewjamesbond

Dude even if you are just a user and wanted to talk about it, you realise you wrote this out in the most shill way possible

Also you've been here a pretty short time, at least with that username.

Anyways uh, I dislike social networking sites because people won't even communicate using IMs anymore. It's facebook walls and messages or nothing... maybe text messages.

Nah, this is the guy who posted that utterly amazing Nintendo-themed basement a little while back.

I'm of a like mind; I don't see the need for any form of "social networking" as we know it in the form of Facebook and the like. IMs and email are the pinnacle in my book.

I just started using Twitter a few weeks ago actually. I kind of like it, mostly because I have trouble mustering the energy to write an entire blog post about anything.

    140 characters I can handle.

To bring this topic back to the front, I too started using Twitter recently.

At first, I struggled to see why this could possibly be useful. But then I saw others using it, and I sorta warmed up to it. Posting little thoughts as tweets is alright. I guess, it really depends on how interesting your own life is. I actually don't have any followers, so I'm just using it as a repository for thoughts I get. I'm just hoping someone will stumble onto it and read.

I've been using one since the writer's strike(someone was covering the events, so I just grabbed an account and followed them to get my news on such things), myself. Mine's really boring so far, but it's still neat to tinker with.

I think that this is an interesting case of using marketing to create a need for this technology. People that wouldn't ever think of writing a thought journal are using this for that exact purpose.

It's odd. I'm too good for Myspace, but Twitter? I'm all up in it. Despite it being the one with the bloody character limit.

However, I'm not against the CONCEPT of Myspace and web 2.0 and such, I just think the goddamned normies muck it up.

I've been using Twitter for almost a year. It is pretty awesome within a circle of friends. Some 'celebrities' use it pretty frequently, too. Major Nelson uses it regularly; my phone exploded with live twittering from him during GDC.

I started tinkering with twitter a few days ago and it's pretty interesting. I gave up on Live Journal a few months ago as I just couldn't be arsed to sit and write long blog posts. With twitter, though, I can take a minute or so just to type up what I'm doing and have done with it. Alos just reading random tweets on the public timeline is strangely fascinating

I use Twitter as an "aside" to my longer form blog posts. It sits in my buddy list in pidgin and I message it from time to time.

It's a glorified "AWAY STATUS" message. That's all the creators said it was for on NPR.

I made myself one too, also for the whole "I want to share my thoughts, but I don't have enough thoughts for a whole LJ/Blog post" thing. It seems to have potential for sure, but I really wish that the main list was a bit longer, or you can select to follow only certain people's replies.

Perhaps, but it is a fun little diversion to tool around with. It's not meant to replace blogs or anything, but rather just to simply accent them.
