PS3 and DVD 5.1[Solved]

Good afternoon. I'm having some PS3 sound issues. When trying to watch a standard movie, the sound isn't in 5.1 or DTS even if I manually select that setting in the DVD menu. I have my PS3 wired via HDMI into an HDMI input on my receiver. I'm pretty sure that BluRay movies are in surround, just not my normals. My audio in the PS3 setup is set to "auto" and HDMI. Can anyone help me get my surround on?

I'm sometimes grumpy and random, feel free to overlook the strange man in the corner.

Are you watching something that has surround? Are there different audio modes to the movie you are watching?

What is your PS3 set to for DVD sound output? (IIRC, there's no automatic for the sound) If it's set to Linear PCM, then your receiver gets already-decoded audio via uncompressed PCM. Most receivers will still display how many channels they're receiving from the source. What does yours say? (For comparison, if I hit "surround display" on my receiver, it tells me I'm getting 7.1 PCM when I have Linear PCM selected)

Alternatively, you can set the output to Bitstream, and the PS3 won't decode the audio, instead sending it to your receiver, which will then display whatever format it's receiving.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

The audio currently is set to automatic over HDMI. The DVD in question is Season 3 of BSG. I've also tried movies that had the option to select Dolby 5.1 or DTS. I've tried both. I'm at a loss at this point.

The options I'm referring to are under BD/DVD settings, not audio settings. Open that up and scroll towards the bottom. Try changing the DVD sound output options.

Thanks for all the help! I finally (just now) found that it was under BD/DVD settings. I set it to bitstream and everything is in Dolby goodness. This one can be closed. =)
