Hey all, this is my first forray out of the
Critical Failures/tabletop forum and into the Art forum. I read the rules, but if this is a no-no please feel free to kill this thread. I'm basically promo-ing an Art Contest with a gaming theme, and we're looking for artists (indie, comic, whatever) in places where Art and Gaming intersect.
Anyway, I help run a yearly tabletop RPG design contest called "
Iron Game Chef", which is basically summed up as "
Design a complete playable RPG in one week with some strong limitations". It's been going strong for some 6 years, and last year had over 150 participants. Anyway, this year, we're creating a two-part contest called "
Artists First!", where we're asking artists to participate: Basically, the first part of the contest will be artists creating 3-5 pieces of work under an aggressive deadline (just a few weeks!) around whatever theme they want. Then, the second part will be game designers picking up your complete art set and using it as a basis to create a tabletop role-playing game.
You'll of course keep all the rights to your art. When the contest is over, you can keep your art, license it out, burn it, whatever. No one touches or uses it without your permission.
Here's the lowdown of the event, the "PR". However, feel free to ask me here, or stop by the site to get more info. And I hope we see some Multiclassed Artist-Gamers show up and give it a shot.
The website (with QA and everything) is here:

We are looking for illustrations for a tabletop roleplaying game that does not exist, created in styles both far and near the RPG mainstream. The illustrations will then be used by a large pool of designers to create those very games.
The Skinny
To enter, artists must draw a series of illustrations for a tabletop role-playing game text that doesn't exist!
1. There must be
3-5 original (created for the contest, not beforehand) black and white illustrations, suitable for the interior of a book
2. B&W only, size should be from 1/4 to a full A4 or 8.5x11 page, although strange form factors are A-OK (everything doesn't need to be contained in a rectangular bounding box)
3. Each illustration should showcase a place, mood, person, idea or event. The illustrations should be thematically connected in some way. Those themes are left entirely up to you.
4. Submissions must be posted in the Game Chef forum as a unique thread in the Art Submissions category, or as an e-mail to
gamechef08@gmail.com by 12:01am April 6th, 2008. [Andy's Note: We might be extending that deadline.]
For complete contest information please visit our website over here:

Artists First is part of the Iron Game Chef contest. Iron Game Chef has run annually since 2002, and has become a center for small press and independent role-playing game development. Last year more than 120 people participated, and several games from that contest are in active playtest with plans for publication.
If this sounds interesting to you (as an artist, or even as an artist who also wants to try their hand at designing a tabletop RPG), please chime in here on this thread, and make sure to go and sign up on the contest message boards!

PR's over. Anyway, as the organizer of the event, a through-and-through tabletop RPG gamer, and a longtime PA reader (since way back when I lived in Japan, some almost 10 years ago!), I'm hoping that some artists here, especially ones interested in tabletop gaming, give it a look, if not jump in and participate.
If you have any questions, please let me know here (or PM me, or ask over on the Artists First/Iron Game Chef website).
Thanks for your time!
-Andy
