PSP: I am slowing being drawn to the dark side...

So, I am heavily considering buying a PSP for myself. The only thing is, I don't know if it's worth it.
There are a few games I want, namely God of War and MGS: PO. Aside from those, I have no idea if the system's for me. I have a Zune, so I have no need for the media capabilities.
Basically, tell me why I should get a PSP. I had a DS, but it broked in half, and I sold off my library. It was great, but I was okay moving on without it.

Games I'll buy:
God of War :CoO
MGS: PO
Lumines (Addicted to the XBLA version)

I like action, shooters, platformers, puzzle, and SOME rpgs.

If you like action gamrs then the PSP has a ton of decent ones. The Syphon Filter games are amazing fun times.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2, Final Fantasy Crisis Core, Wipeout Pulse, Disgaea, R-Type Command, Killzone: Liberation, Patapon... the list goes on. I play my PSP as much or more than any of my systems lately. I wouldn't think twice about picking one up at this point. The system is made of win and awesome.

Two of those games have not actually come out yet, but generally I agree.

I ended up buying a PSP about a month ago and I haven't regretted it since. I needed something to keep me busy during random spurts of mobile downtime, and to tell you the truth I clocked less time in with my DS than any other system I've owned and would not replace it if mine were lost/stolen or destroyed.

That being said, I would absolutely run out and buy another PSP in the event of catastrophe, I think it's a pretty fantastic little system with a growing library of great games. GTA: Vice City Stories is great, as is Final Fantasy Tactics and Valkyrie Profile. They even ported over Street Fighter Alpha III and Parappa the Rapper - there's lots of good stuff.

It also has a lot of homebrew fun-ness and PS1 emulation fun-ness, but you can pick up a discussion about those kinds of things on another forum.

Which two games? Only R-Type Command is not out yet by my reckoning.

I have had a PSP from day one and have never regretted it. Certain launch-era games I regretted getting, but that's another story. The games have really been coming out fast and furiously since last year. Lumines definitely has legs - I still take it out and play it every so often. Puzzle Quest is another perennial favorite of mine. As someone else mentioned, the Syphon Filter games are fantastic. Better than MGS : PO IMHO.

I love the fact that you can hook up the sucker to a PC or Mac and directly store files on the memory card. You can even back up your saved games on the PC! Not too many other systems you can guard against losing that perfect game so effortlessly on!

I like to download YouTube videos and convert them to MP4s and show then on the PSP. I know you said you don't wish to use one for music, but I have never had a music player because I have the PSP.

It's such a wonderfully capable little piece of hardware - and it has very good games in it's line up.

It's not the dark side, it's a quality console that's come into its own in the last year. I *just* placed an order for one on Amazon, along with Final Fantasy Tactics and Patapon. I would've gotten more games but a) money and b) free shipping in the future means that I might as well wait until I have more time or have played through at least those 2 games.

It's matured enough that most games aren't just PS2 ports, and are modified to play well on the system. Take the difference in the first and second Killzone, for instance -- a FPS to a 3rdPS, and the 2nd game is better for it, I'm told.

In a lot of ways the DS is more like the Wii in that it gets new franchises and weird games, while the PSP gets more "straightfoward" games. And it's been getting some good ones lately, so yeah, knock yourself out. It's a quality console. I personally think you'll be plenty busy with the more recent stuff -- the early games were sort of a misstep in my opinion, and while there's some good older stuff, the recent stuff blasts it out of the water.

Before doing anything, i'd suggest checking out the game catalogs, which gave me a good idea of what type of games are available and a decent overview whether they are any good or not. I did this when weighing up a PSP vs a DS, and found that one platform was just better suited to me.

    Gamespot PSP game rankings

    Gamerankings - Top Rated

Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops is excellent, it is a perfect conversion of the MGS game and the control scheme works very well. The graphics are excellent and the story in my opinion is one of the strongest in the entire MGS series. Other games I have enjoyed are Sid Meier's Pirates (Swordfighting during your lunch hour? HELL YEAH!), Final Fantasy Tactics (Addicting!), and the Syphon Filter series (Excellent quality games).

One thing to look out for is that the PSP can be a bit more expensive than the deal suggests. A lot of this is optional, but I have bought:

    -Screen Protector
    -Carry case
    -Memory Card
    -Headphones
-USB Cable for PC file transfer

This all adds up to slightly more than an instore deal might suggest!

An old thread that provides a couple of good suggestions when buying a PSP-
    http://forums.penny-arcade.com/showthread.php?t=20905

I love my PSP, I have my music collection on it, a number of videos and it stays in my bag wherever I go so I never get bored on a journey. As has been said, support for the platform from Sony is still growing and more and more stuff is being added to the Playstation store.

It's ok, I still love you.

Also, I would suggest against buying GoW. It's a great game, but it's a great game that lasts only about 6-7 hours. Also, the unlockables pale in comparison to what you got in GoW2.

Don't get me wrong, if you can pick it up for 25 dollars or less, then it's good. But for 40, I like a bit more meat on my games.

Not that it hasn't already gotten rave reviews.

Edit: I dunno if the OP is burned out on the Katamari series, but I was damned impressed with the PSP version. Damned impressed. The PSN PS1 selection is getting better too.

Here's what you do, you go buy a PSP now. You buy a couple games like MGS:PO, Metal Gear Ac!d 1 & 2, Silent Hill Origins, Killzone: Liberation, and GoW:CoO.

Then you buy a PS3, and purchase fron the PSN Pixel Junk Monsters. You hook that sum'bitch up to the internet, then use the remote play features.

BAM! Tower Defense on your PSP from anywhere where there is internet. This is what you should do.

It probably just downloads/streams to your memory card, maybe RAM. But it is neat that it allows you to turn your home ps3 on/off via the PSP via the internet via wireless.

It's not that common, though. I know Lair has some stuff.

I just bought a PSP the other day myself. And I fell in love with the little thing. For rpg's, I'm finding Disgaea to be a lot of fun. And I've heard good things about Final Fantasy Tactics and Wild Arms XF. Not to mention Crisis Core which is coming out this week.
Among other things the PSP can do, I think one of the niftier features is thatIt's also cool that you can easily download game demo's from the PSP store and PSPfanboy.

Now concerning accesories, I have a pretty nifty carrying case and the usb cable from Pelican brand. I don't have a screen protector yet though.
I keep on hearing that the Hori screen protectors are the best, for both the PSP and the DS. So I'm thinking about getting some eventually. However, I'm not sure where the best place to buy those screen protectors online would be. Any tips?

It's a beautiful system. Also, there's some great imports if you don't mind the extra few bucks here and there; DJ MAX Portable, Initial D(why hasn't this gotten localized, Sega? Don't you want my money?), Devil Summoner, etc.

Beyond that, between Disgaea, Castlevania: Dracula X, FFT, Lumines II(yes II; infinite replay value), Silent Hill 0, MGS... it's enough to set you up for months.

You can also download demos from any place with a WiFi connection from Sony's website, and/or download them from the internet and transfer them straight to the PSP with a USB cable(lots more available this way).

As for screen protectors, I use a case that includes one inside it; it's an official, I think. Also holds two games.

PSP has an awesome selection of RPGs. I'm either going to buy Crisis Core or Jeanne D'arc next, which ever I can find on sale.

Also if you have a carrying case then a screen protector seems unnecessary. Besides if you scratch up your screen you can always buy a replacement shell for about $6 they come in cool colors and stuff. (Thinking of buying a transparent one.) Only problem is you want to do the replacement ins a relatively dust free location.)

I lurve my PSP (I've upgraded to a Darth Vader Slim), and I've done away with the homebrew, which I was extremely underwhelmed by. It's not without it's problems (Sony, give me a god damned qwerty keyboard on the thing), but it has a nice solid library that has occupied my time lately more than the DS.

Though with owning all the current systems, my time with each one varies wildly.

    DOOOOO IIIITTTT.

My PSP has seen near-constant use since I got it ... umm.. well, it was FW 1.52 out of the box, so probably late 2005 or- no, I probably got it after Christmas '06. 2 years ago?

Killzone, obviously, for shooter+online, or there's Medal of Honor if you want the WWII aspect. The SOCOM games are fun, as are the Syphon Filter ones. I've yet to see Lumines one OR two in stores, presumably for the same reasons I can't find Super Smash Bros (N64) anywhere. I'd try Metal Gear Acid 2 since you enjoy puzzles as well as shooters, and it has mild RPG aspects... oh, also Puzzle Quest. I've yet to find someone that doesn't like it. Daxter for platformer goodness, and there's those MegaMan games floating around - I have Maverick Hunter X, and honestly I'm not impressed, but If you're into MegaMan you'll doubtlessly enjoy them. LocoRoco and patapon for happyjoyfun games.

Please, please, don't ignore the expanded opportunities when thinking about buying a PSP. Too many people just look at the stock games and go 'ew, it doesn't have what I want, or doesn't have enough of it.' Remember your PSP is region-free, so things like Free Running, BBoy, DJ MAX, Talkman, and other import titles play on it. Also, there's the homebew scene, which is a portal to endless enjoyment - not necessarily illegally, either. Homebrew games like Zero Gravity, Open BoR and PurpleMotion, Callisto, and PSPKick are perfectly legal and very fun.

You get better battery life. (Super duper battery life if you throw a fatty battery in your slim) Also you can get faster UMD loads due to caching, though the improvements might be minimal on older games. (slim has double the memory uses the extra to cache). Also a lot of homebrew stuff does work on the slim, though some of it needs to be done through a loader.

It's much lighter and more comfortable to hold for long periods of time, plus the D-pad is absurdly better than the original PSP Phat. The battery life is apparently roughly the same, but if you use the Phat battery in a Slim you'll get improved battery life AFAIK. I sold my homebrew-enabled Phat online for about $110, put the money to the white Slim and never looked back. Love love love it, although it's a bit tougher to find nice cases for it; I was sad to let go of my Playgear Pocket.

Fucking Tekken dark ressurrection and its insanely pissing off type gameplay. I'm so angry I can't even make sense right now. I actually twisted it so much that the entire screen is now a pretty cool looking black with lightning streaks going across it. I just pretend its a screensaver of sorts.

I love my PSP, but I only have two issues, neither of which are the PSP's fault.

    1. Before I bought my Wii, and shortly after, my 360, my original intent was to own a PSP and a DS, and that would be my gaming systems. Unfortunately that only lasted for about 6 months before I caved and picked up a Wii. It's a great system, with my biggest issue being that I can't find the time to play it between the other three systems I own...not to mention...

2...the screen. It's great, but I'm uber-fucking-paranoid about scratching it. I already have a few times, and that's just the faint scratches that you have to look for to notice, but I know they're there and it bugs me. I'm afraid to play the thing because when I play it, I notice fingerprints and whathaveyou on the screen, and the more I wipe the screen, the more the screen scratches. It's a lose-lose. I've gone through a few screen protectors, even the invisible shield brand. None of them fit well, and the invisible shield I fucked up in the installation process and never bothered to get another one because I know it'd just fuck it up as well and I hate to keep spending money on the thing.

I sold my homebrew-enabled Phat online for about $110, put the money to the white Slim and never looked back. Love love love it, although it's a bit tougher to find nice cases for it; I was sad to let go of my Playgear Pocket.

You know, based off your posts here at PA and at CAG, I'm beginning to think we're the same person.

So I'm getting one today. You guys convinced me.
Question: Should I get one of those bundles?
I like the Darth Vader PSP, but the GoW bundle has the game I want in there already...

I don't think the god of war bundle is out yet so that might make that an easy choice.
