Look at that box art. If that doesn't say "You shoot Stormtroopers in this game", I don't know what does!
I was right!
Here goes my second LP, Dark Forces. I first played this way back when it was released in 1995 at a demo display at CompUSA. I immediately had to have it. I mean, shooting stormtroopers and having first person shenanigans in the Star Wars universe? What's not to like? While not my favorite two-and-a-half-D FPS, it still ranks up there pretty high. I'll let Wikipedia do the explaining on why:
Overall, the game is a standard first-person shooter. The majority of enemies are humanoid (mainly Imperial troops and aliens such as Grans) who are easily killed, although the game also features some tougher opponents (such as the Dark Troopers and Boba Fett) who appear relatively infrequently. Dark Forces was not designed to be a gory game, and does not feature any blood.
Dark Forces introduces capabilities such as looking up and down, jumping and crouching, and a headlamp and IR goggles which illuminate dark areas. In contrast to earlier games, the player takes damage from large falls. The game also features liquid surfaces, in the form of rivers and pools, in which the player partially submerges. Levels are generally far more dynamic than in Doom, including such items as moving platforms, conveyor belts, flowing rivers, and rotating fans. These various aspects allowed for more realistic and challenging environments.
Unlike many other FPS games of its era, Dark Forces was constructed around a strong plot. The missions followed a reasonably detailed storyline, sometimes interrupted by cutscenes to progress the tale. Each mission had its own briefing and specific objectives, such as retrieving items or planting explosives, instead of simply killing enemies and reaching the exit. The levels were intentionally designed to present a cognitive as well as physical challenge, and thus included numerous puzzles. The player found himself in numerous and varied environments such as bases, mines, cities, and other known places from the Star Wars universe such as Star Destroyer interiors, Jabba the Hutt's space yacht and Coruscant.
Great LP Frank, I own this game somewhere and I remember playing it at some point, I just cannot recall completely. Oh well. Also, how did some people not get motion sickness/lost to this game? I never do and with how fast you run and how fast you turn in that game even made me a little woozy. Not to mention watching you play I got lost and tried to figure out what I was looking at sometimes. That's my only complaint though, good stuff nonetheless.
Ah, this takes me back to the good old days when every Lucasarts game was something special.
Good choice for a LP. I'd keep up with the humour, like referring to Katarn as a drunkard and the mission briefings. Katarn's detailled knowledge of Imperial Methods which allowed him to steal the plans? More like landing on the roof, shooting everyone and exiting from exactly the same spot. At least he isn't as much of a chancer as the second game, where he finds a lightsaber in a garage and decides he wants to be a jedi

You know, I had actually considered doing Dark Forces 2 for a bit but I could never make the game run in windowed mode so my recording software wouldn't record it right. Also the cut-scenes would get out of sync. If you move on to that after this that would be cool because 2 was the only one I ever played.
Also if someone could help me fix those problems with DF2 do I can just play it on my own time, that would be great.

I wish I knew. I reinstalled it when I reinstalled Dark Forces and it was far far harder to get working in Vista. As far as I know there's only a command for making the GUI menus go into windowed mode (-windowgui in the shortcut's target field). I haven't found a way to make the whole game windowed.
I don't know about the cut-scenes. Never had a problem with those. You might find some handy info at LucasForums.
Heh, I remember playing this way back when. The only way I could play it was with cheats on because otherwise I just died all the time. And yes, that is because I sucked at it, I suck at all FPSs.
I'll tell you what we need, though, is a fucking new Jedi Knight game. Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 3, please. Dark Forces 2 was one of the best multiplayer games ever, and I have incredible memories from playing that online. The mod community was massive.

Also, thanks for the links Rogueknight-. I was reading the Wookiepeadia entry for Jan Ors last night and it's really interesting. I had no idea they used Kyle and Jan in stuff other than the Dark Forces games. Or that Dark Horse made a Dark Forces comic book. Good stuff.
Man these bring so many memories flooding back. Definitely one of the best games period. Can't wait for you to get to the last level - I think I beat it twice, ever. It confused the shit out of me back then - I'd kill everything and then get completely lost.
These games forever colored my perception of the whole star wars universe. All imperial bases are labyrinths filled with bored stormtroopers, and imperial officers eat babies.
At least in this game the stormtroopers are taking a few hard hits before they fall down, the little explosions on their armor look a bit more dramatic than they do in many of the true three d games.

I don't think that ever gave me much of a problem. The level I always dread is the Imperial building with the circular vault you have to crack by opening the doors in a certain order. They also always seem to fit a Nar Shadda level in each game that I end up hating. Especially the one in Outcast where they give enemies sniper rifles that kill you in two shots from across half the map.

Well I lucked out and found this game for $10 at Half-price books (also saw Tie Fighter there for $15). The game runs fine except I can't get the sound to work, any pointers?

Wait a minute...i did play this game! It was the console port of it though and i remember two things: getting lost all the time and being horribly depressed by level two. I remember my younger self finally realising what those black and brown blobs on the floors were and responding to it almost exactly like Frank did.

I know sound will not play if you run it straight from the CD. Play the exe where ever its installed. This game was the only one that would give me motion sickness if I played without sound.
Awesome thread. Good job. I played the hell out of this years ago. I think I even beat the game on normal difficulty which doesn't happen very often with me and FPS's. I never played DF2 but I think I still have the CDs. I guess I should give it a shot sometime. What we need is a Let's Play for X-Wing so I could figure out how to actually do that one mission where you are supposed to disable 73 transports with a Y Wing before your ass gets blown up.
This was an awesome game back in the day, it was the type of game that you'd step over your own siblings (with pleasure) to play obsessively. Though in my heart Jedi Knight 2 is my fav game starring Kyle.

Did that, no sound.
The problem is that I can't get it to detect the computer's sound card in setup. Where on the computer can I check which port the general midi sound is used?
EDIT: TV's Frank: How did you get the sound and music to work in your game? Can't get it to in mine.

You'll have to use DOSBox to run it and it's setup program. Also get the D-Fend Reloaded frontend. It makes setting up DOS games painless and works with Vista.

Wow. I was just about to pipe in and say that the door puzzle is about the only thing I remember from the game...and I thought it was neat enough way back when that I recreated it in a Duke3D level.
Plus I somehow have a disc(yes, an original) lying around for this game and I guarantee I've never bought it. I have no idea what friend could have left this here. A tiny mystery in my life I shall never have an answer for.

EDIT EDIT: Got the sound working, they've used some of the same sound effects in Jedi Knight! Very cool!
also, I'm noticing there's no reticle. Are you just that good of a shot? You're nailing everyone so far.
There is a bit of auto aim... The shots go to the right place if you point the gun in the right direction. Also, you don't need to look up and down to shoot. It works a lot like Doom's gun, anything right in front of you gets hit.
This next level is a fucking nightmare, what a labyrinth. I hated it the most. The ice level is not cool either, at least until you get the cleats.

I played the shit out of this game, but never beat it. The levels were brilliant though, perhaps too brilliant for my young mind at the time. I do think I got pretty far though.
And yeah Kyle's ship is like the coolest looking ship in all of Star Wars.

I remember it being very easy to skip over a huge part of the first level, that big door that's outside that leads to a smaller, darker base.

Yeah there's no crosshairs in this game. We didn't need no fancy crosshairs like you kids today... just vertical auto-aim.
Updated.
