Internet pipe thing. What happened?

So you may remember a while ago there was this thing announced that let you send files to people over the intertron, and it just appeared like a shortcut or a drive on your desktop. What happened to it? Googling obvious finds nothing of use, and I'm pretty curious.

Last I heard, there were 4 lines cut and they still couldn't figure out what was causing it. They had at least (maybe) ruled out anchors from boats. Anyone have more recent info?

As a disclaimer I have no interest in this kind of thing so I've never checked it out myself, but being a fan of Digg/Rev3 stuff I've heard Kevin Rose plug http://www.pownce.com a lot and from what I understand it's supposed to be what you're talking about.

Never looked at it further than the front page though so I have no idea how/how well it works.

Sounds like you want WASTE or some other private darknet solution.

    Hamachi works too.

http://www.ilovebonnie.net/2008/02/12/the-submarine-cables-a-complete-guide-to-the-2008-internet-outage/ - Standard seemingly unbiased news. Good for info.

    http://twilightpines.com//index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=121&Itemid=67 - Crazy tinfoil version.

    http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2008/02/who-cut-the-cab.html - Logical explination.

    I love the internet.

1: Is there a filesize limit on Hamachi? And is it any improvement over just using MSN to exchange files?

2: Is there a Mac port?

3: Where is the Mac port?

4: Give me the Mac port.

Oh right, you're one of them Mac terrorists. Sorry, Hamachi is windows only. But it's essentially just a "VPN for dummies" thing that you then talk standard Windows SMB shares or whatever over.

    Hay, so it does.
Hamachi is currently available for Windows 2000, XP, 2003, and Vista. Console versions of Hamachi are also available for Linux and OS X.

Might want to give it a spin then, Ben.

If you don't just need transfer but also persistent storage (like for backups, or for uploading from one machine and downloading to another) you could try Jungle Disk. I haven't used it but heard an episode about it on Security Now ep 123.
