BootCFG, MBR, SATA

I'm migrating my XP Pro installation from ye auld IDE drive to a new SATA. I formatted the drive and installed a fresh copy of Windows. Problem is, I can't seem to boot to this new installation. I have tried repairing the master boot record, and Bootcfg /rebuild tells me it has "failed to add selected entry to boot list". Bootcfg /list shows the installation I want, but when I try to load Windows the boot sequence stops and tells me to insert system disk.

I'm still able to boot to my old drive, so I can get into Windows just fine. I'm at a bit of a loss otherwise, though. Any suggestions?

Is there something different about setting up a boot sequence with a SATA drive?

Not really, make sure SATA is enabled in your bios, then I would suggest doublechecking your bios boot order.

Actually, you may want to go through all of your bios settings and make sure they look right. (There should be a 'restore to sensible defaults' option, you may want to try that unless something funny is going on.

If that doesn't work, reinstall windows. What you're looking for is for the installer to get to the point where it wants to format the disk, make sure you do a full (not quick) format of the whole drive. (unless you have important data on there somewhere)

If the install process doesn't bomb out, you should be good to go.

(I'm assuming that this is a motherboard with built in SATA support, if it's a sata card instead, there may be other things going on)

I did something similar a couple of weeks ago and ended up having to reinstall the works.

I hope you have better luck than I did.
