    Now onto the problems...
I built this pc a while back and was running it on my 80gb hard drive and everything was going smooth...

I recently got my 400gb hdd and a new power supply so I installed that as the OS drive for Windows XP professional. The install went fine. I boot up windows install all my drivers and restart the computer. When the computer restarts everything looks alright, but when I go to do a simple task such as open up internet explorer or go into my computer or control panel, etc. it freezes up on me. Another thing is that it takes about 20 minutes for the computer to shutdown without me doing a forced shutdown. Any idea on whats the matter would be INCREDIBLY APPRECIATED

Test the memory, sometimes it goes bad.

Could of course be that your new HDD is faulty, although that's unlikely; or the new PSU, but that power supply is freakin' awesome (I have it in my computer) and I sincerely doubt that it would be busted.

Yeah I really doubt it's the power supply and I sure as fuck hope it's not the 400GB because when I say I recently got that I mean like back in June I got the thing... I'm just lazy with installing and didn't have a proper version of XP at the time.

Yes. Both were wiped with no partitions when I installed windows. So I created the partition on the 400 during installation then when everything was up and running i made a partition on the 80 for storage.

Motherboard or memory fault; could be an issue with the OS disc as well, but thats much more unlikely. If you can, get a copy of Eurosoft PC Check - it's pretty comprehensive and fits on a floppy (or burn as an ISO)

Well then, I just decided to use the XP cd to repair the install and now everything is working perfect... hahah. That was quite stange. For once the computer shut down within 5 seconds. :D

EDIT: Appears as though that was a one time thing... it's still freezing ahhahhah. fuck.

Like I said, try testing the memory. If you don't want to deal with Memtest, at least try each memory stick by itself to see if one of the two is broken.

Do I need to put memtest on a cd-rom? or...? And are you just talking about taking one stick out and bootin up?

Well, taking one stick out and booting up (then trying the other if it doesn't work) is a fast way to check if one of them is causing the problem. As for Memtest, yeah, you need to burn it to a CD and boot with it if you want to do a proper test for errors.
