Help with Seeking Employment

Hey all,

The school year is winding down, and if I want to remain in this town I need to find a summer job. The problem is I've never had to actively search for jobs until I came to college. Last year I waited until mid-April to find jobs and ended up working at Target. I hated it and would really like to avoid working there again.

My job experience:
I'm really good at working with people, so working retail isn't something that I would necessarily avoid. The way that my Target store operated was kind of stupid, though... my managers wanted me to focus more on organizing shelves than on helping customers. I would have customers talk to my managers at the checkout lanes complimenting me on how helpful I was to them, so that must say something about my customer service skills.

While I was in high school, I participated in this program that placed me in a bank, where I eventually became a teller for the summer. I enjoyed working with people and did very well at the bank.

I'm currently a Resident Assistant at my university.

So there's basically my significant job experience. I worked at the bank for about a year, I worked at Target for four stupid months, and I will have been a Resident Assistant for 9 months when I finish out the year. My question is this: What is the best way to job search?

I have heard that some people go straight to businesses with a résumé and talk to their HR Department about employment, but that just seems kind of strange to me. I'm a very personable guy and I don't have a problem talking to people, but doing something like that seems extremely confident to me.

It is extremely confident, which is a good thing.

That said, when I was job searching a few years ago it consisted of a lot of looking online -- which may or may not be fruitful depending on the size of your town -- and walked around going into businesses and asking if they were hiring. I never actually just walked in somewhere and dropped off a resume with HR, but that is certainly a possibility as well.

You could look on campus as well since you're in school. For most schools, large sections still operate over the summer and so they still need employees.

It's extremely confident, but not so much as to be arrogant or intruding?

I don't think so, but that could depend on the person on the receiving end.

I think if you go in and ask to speak to someone in HR and tell them you're interested in working there, that should be fine. They may just tell you they're not hiring, but they may ask you for a resume or tell you about any positions they're looking for now.
