My Wii won't turn on! Help! D:

More specifically, it comes on, and either stops at the Health and Safety screen, or just shows a black screen. It was working fine last night. Since then, it was in standby mode until I tried to turn it on just a little while ago.

It doesn't seem to be hard-frozen, because I can put a disc in and it will make all of the noises it normally makes when it attempts to read the disc, remotes still connect, and I can still turn the system off by pressing the power button once or pressing the power button on the remote. The screen still does the fancy fade-to-black when I turn it off. It still goes into the screen-saving mode after I leave it at the Health and Safety screen for a long time, and comes back out of screen-saving mode when I press a button on the remote. It will not eventually go to the Wii menu if left alone, like it normally does.

The "Press A to Continue" thing never comes up, and it doesn't respond to anything I've tried. I have tried pressing every button on multiple remotes, a classic controller, and two Gamecube controllers. I have tried praying. I have tried cursing the names of my enemies. I have tried resyncing both remotes, and I have tried all sorts of different sets of batteries with varying amounts of charge. I have tried different video cables. I have tried unplugging it for 10 minutes or so. I have tried it with a Wii disc in. I have tried it with a Gamecube disc in. I have tried it with an Xbox 360 disc in. I have tried reading my operations manual for important information about my health and safety (also online at www.nintendo.com/healthsafety). I can't think of anything else to try.

Help. :(

No. Fuck that. I JUST got it back from Nintendo after they took two weeks to repair it when it wouldn't read Brawl.

Edit: Obviously I will call them if I can't figure out some way to make the damn thing work. I just thought maybe hopefully someone could helllllp.

I remember having a problem similar where my Wii would just shut off, and it only happened with brawl. Could be the power supply for the Wii, a friend gave it a few pats and then the Wii just started working as normal again, no more blackouts.

I suggest putting a fan under it cause even with all of it's gizmos it can still get really hot really fast.

I hope the best for your situation, I can't imagine weeks without brawl.

I don't know if the problem has anything to do with not properly syncing the remotes but try resyncing them with any bright lights in the room turned off. I've had problems syncing remotes with my bright fluorescent lights turned on.

Try this: unplug the power cable from both the wall and the wii for 5 minutes. The wii power brick seems to be ratehr sensitive and can be tripped rather easily - and stays that way unless it's left unplugged for a short time. It's happened to me twice.

    Hope this works man.

edit: actually, that doesn't seem to be likely, as it that would cause the wii to not turn on at all. Damn.

Unplug it from the brick and the brick from the outlet for 30 min. Then plug it all back in and power it on with no disc inside. (Remove disc before unplugging) It should reset the system and boot everything as if it were new.

    yeah, seriously -

Just unplug the power cable from it, and let it sit still for 30 minutes.

Then come back, plug the power back in, and try turning it back on.

This happened to me once about 2 weeks after I bought mine (launch unit) and it has only done it that one time, and has never done it since. Doing this unplug and wait thing fixed it for some reason, and it's actually what the Nintendo support suggested.

Are you saying that you had this exact problem, where it gets stuck on the Health and Safety screen, and that fixed it?

In any case, it didn't work for me.

I'm not sure.. what really happened to me was all kinds of crazy crap involving startup, shutdown, and the video output quality. All kinds of weird shit. So maybe it's not the same..

    damn. sorry.

Try a different power outlet? A different TV? I know that sounds nutty but what else can you try? Try a different A/V cable, a different power cable?

The probably screwed it up somehow while "repairing" it. Just send it back to Nintendo.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

The only one of those I haven't tried is the different power cable, but it seems unlikely that would be the problem. The systems powers on like normal, the disc drive spins up, the lights all turn on and the remotes connect.

I am so sad. I have a Wii-less friend who I've wanted to play Brawl with since the game came out. We went together to pick the game up as soon as it came out, but then my Wii wouldn't read it. We finally make plans today for him to come over tomorrow to play, and my goddamn Wii breaks again.

I guess they didn't read that note you put in with your Wii the last time you sent it off for repair.

They probably just thought it would be funny if they broke my Wii to get back at me for being such an ass with that note.

I bet right now they're like "WHOOPS, GUESS I DIDN'T ACTUALLY FIX IT THIS TIME :rotate:"

Not sure of this will help, but if you hold down "+" and "-" during the Health and Safety screen, the Wii starts in Maintenance mode. That might get it to load the main screen.

What does maintenance mode do? It would be helpful if it reset the system to 480i, because sometimes I go home and bring my Wii, but the TV there only supports 480i over component. It's tough to change by guessing and watching the flickering garbage closely.

Edit: on a more serious note, sorry to hear about your problems, maybe calling Nintendo is the best bet though.

If you end up having to send it in to Nintendo, I recommend trying to ask for a replacement so that the chance of ever having to send in a broken Wii again will be a lot smaller.

PS to those who are curious about maintenance mode:

It basically is there so Wii's sent in for repairs can be turned on without personally identifiable information being available to techs. Nintendo cares about your privacy!
