So, I just purchased ye olde Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. I'm nearing the end, but it's been proving one hell of a ride so far.
For anyone who hasn't played, here's the Wikipedia info:
Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction is a third-person shooter which takes place in the near future. It was developed by Pandemic Studios and published on January 11, 2005 by LucasArts. It is available for the Sony Playstation 2 and the Microsoft Xbox. The Xbox version is currently compatible with the Xbox 360 as of the update dated 4/18/07, however many have experienced issues with its emulation.[citation needed]
The sequel, Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, has been announced for the PC, PS2, PS3 and Xbox360. The sequel is expected in August 25, 2008 as of February 21, 2008. The due date may change due to delays.
In the near future the president of North Korea, Choi Kim, extends an olive branch to South Korea. The hopes he has of peaceful Korea reunification spread to South Korea and the South Koreans agree to send North Korea money on the condition that they disband their military. North Korea agrees. All is well until the night of the reunification.
President Choi Kim's son, General Choi Song, is dissatisfied with the peace treaties and talks. On the eve of the reunification of North and South Korea, he stages a violent coup, storming the summit and killing his father, seizing control of the country.
General Choi Song then expels all foreigners from North Korea into South Korea. North Korea goes "dark". No weapon inspectors or foreign press are allowed in and all communications with the outside world cease. Eventually, the world's eyes turn to other matters. Still rumors run rampant, all hinting the worst, but, as many hoped, they are just rumors.
A North Korean freighter, floundering in a storm, is rescued by the Royal Australian Navy. The RAN finds the crew making a hasty attempt to scuttle the ship, and becomes suspicious. Upon searching the ship, the RAN finds nuclear weapons bound for an Indonesian company known to be a front for terrorists. The link between Song, terrorists, and nuclear weapons is made. Within hours of the discovery, Chinese intelligence reports that Song's missile capabilities are much higher than once assumed - he can hit any target on all seven continents.
The Allied Nations (a fictional version of the United Nations) forms a combat force with troops from all over the globe, initiates a large-scale landing, and smashes through a division of NK regulars, taking the missile sites at Yongbyon. The NK troops, though well-trained and equipped, had never experienced real war - resulting in many of its commanders panicking and fleeing. The Allied Nations emerge victorious with minimal losses. But their euphoria over breaking Song's grip on the country is cut short - they find documents containing evidence that Song is building 30 more nuclear warheads and missiles at an unknown launch site. Worse yet, the documents indicate that the weapons will be ready in three weeks.
The AN top priority becomes to find and capture or kill Song before he is able to launch the missiles. After two weeks of searching fruitlessly for Song, the AN issues a "Deck of 52," (most-wanted war criminals playing cards - much like the one used in the Iraq War). The Clubs are members of Division 39, a state-sponsored mafia consisting of ministers in the government. The Diamonds are high-ranking military officials. The Hearts are noted scientists credited with developing nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. The Spades are General Song's all-female special forces squad and their male commanders. Song, of course, is the Ace of Spades. A 100 million U.S. dollar bounty is placed on his head, with the bounties on the other members of the Deck of 52 beginning at $250,000.
The player is a mercenary working for Executive Operations, or ExOps (a name which may be derived from the actual private military company Executive Outcomes), a private military company that provides military services to world governments and large corporations. The player has been tasked with finding and either capturing or killing members of the Deck of 52, and most specifically, General Song, before he can launch his nuclear warheads.
There are multiple endings to the game depending on whether the player disabled the nuclear missiles or not and the faction with the most trust at the end of the game. All endings are with either the ICBMs exploding after receiving the self-destruct codes or the ICBMs hitting downtown Seoul, Tokyo, Moscow or Beijing and causing millions of casualties and the capture or death of General Song.
So, in short; Third person shooter that's basically GTA with more killing. However, you're killing terrorists, not hookers.
Also, the Mafia will fly in vehicles and supplies or blow shit up for you if you pay them.
Basically, it kicks untold ass.
So, let's talk about epic tales of victory, glitches, the upcoming sequel, or just whatever!
My stories are minor stuff; Just things like how I called in a sniper rifle and used it to clear out a very heavily defended card easily, or the time I just crashed a helicopter into a building to get one of the face-cards. I'm assuming you guys have far cooler stories.

I've beaten this game about a dozen times, half of them with Mui. Anti-material rifle and AT launcher is a hard combination to make work, but I reserve my machineguns of doom for Matthias.
It was awesome
I'm still trying to make the C4 work right. So far it's only useful for fixed emplacements. Is there a trick to using it on vehicles and people properly?
I really hope they don't change too much of the gameplay or physics for the new one. I also hope it runs with a nice framerate.
Judging from the trailer vids I've seen, they haven't. The central mechanics are all there, with only some minor stuff being changed(Mafia's gone; now you form a PMC, and they bring in some equipment for you via airdrop), and some additions(boats, swimming).
Can't wait for Mercs 2, so glad it went multiplatform to 360.
The final straw was accidentally killing the card. Sure, I could've taken his picture, but I'm a perfectionist and prefer to capture all of them. I don't remember if I actually completed that one or not, but it certainly sticks out.
My Backloggery
Yeah, I've had ones like that.
I call in an NK attack chopper, blow the crap out of the card, verify and medivac. I got all of the clubs, and managed to get the ace of heats alive, but beyond that, more and more kills.
Got one of the spades alive, though. It was really quite epic. I got in atop the mountain behind where she was, so I called in a sniper rifle(missed the sniper resource crate, sadly; just have the sniper rifle crate), and shot them all. Every last guard she had went DOWN. In vehicles, not in vehicles, whatever. They all died. Then I just bashed her in the head and called in the evac.
Also, Arrath, have you considered the god mode cheat? I mean, anything's worth it for an epic chopper like that.
I reeeally hope they expand on the 'cheat crate' in the sequel, myself. I'd love to see the vehicle weapons get cheat-items too. Explosive Machine Gun, Pocket Tank, the works.
Doing the mission where you have to
And then the chopper following me blows up the bridge.
I'm guessing the point of the mission is to race to the bridge, see it blown up, then race back and take the long route around the mountain instead.
I react too late. Slam on the brakes, turn into the mountain side and wall surf the mountain all the way to the opposite side.
Choppers won't follow me, in my mind I can see the gop-smacked pilots too stunned to do anything, and I waltz down the mountain trail to the AN base.
Ah, good times...
I've heard wonky things. Some people have had lockups, others have had no problems at all.
Really, your best bet is to just get your hands on a PS2 or Xbox if you don't have one. An xbox will run you like 40 bucks max on Ebay, and then you can toss XBMC onto it and use it as a media extender.
Oh, I've had lockups, and I don't know what brings them on. When they happen, it can be a few times in a row. But for the most part, they aren't an issue. Just save between missions and you should be fine.

However I'm still waiting for it in rapt attention!
I guarantee that was the 10 of Diamonds. I hate that stupid card. :x
For using C4: the best option is to hop on your car, plant a few blocks on top, and drive it at whatever needs exploding. Bail out and hit the trigger.

Eh, I have both an Xbox and a PS2, and the PS2 is actually still hooked up, but I'm kind of 360-centric at the moment. Plus, for some reason, GameStop.com lists a used copy of the Xbox version at $9.99 while the PS2 version is $29.99.
After fighting my way out, I realized the building had been a hospital.
I can't wait for the next one, since I had this on PS2 and sold awhile ago.
Actually wasn't aware there was a god-mode cheat. I wish the game had vehicle garages like GTA to save vehicles in, I must've spent a half million on vehicle resupply drops for that chopper as I blew up the countryside.
I know PoD mode is basically a new-game+.
Can you then go into PoD mode again from your beaten PoD save?
That's what the official site says. One map, bigger than the two in the original put together.
Also, a grenade launcher.
My frothing demand increases exponentially with every passing second.
Edit: and he is doing the soundtrack for the sequel too.
Checked Gamestop? I've seen PS2 copies around, but had to resort to a used copy to get mine.
Doesn't even have a manual.
Speaking of which, the devs putting a 'controls' button right on the pause menu to show the current controls for your vehicle type/on foot was a BRILLIANT decision, and one I hope more developers adopt.
Also, woo, time to get Song! I have the other 51 cards acquired, so it's just him left! Then I get my cheat crate for round 2.
I wish I still had my PS2. Sold it to my girlfriend's little sister. I've still got a copy of Mercenaries sitting around, and nothing to play it on. I want so, so hard for the sequel to come out. Multiplayer!
Oh, wait, I had a second gripe: It's completely ridiculous that there aren't enough missions to let you play through just taking missions from the "good guys" or "bad guys". Sooner or later you have to piss everyone off at least once. This seems like terrible sandbox design.
There usually is, if you do it real well. But you'll be stretching and getting every single number card you can.
No, I seem to remember that it grinds to a halt before you get out of the first section of the game, at least sticking with the Allied Nations / South Korea missions.
Agreed! This game was hands down one of my top picks of the last gen. When I heard they were making a sequel I nearly creamed my pants. I recall not keeping up with the release of this game then seeing a few trailers and commercials thinking, 'they're making this game look much cooler than it'll ever be'. Boy was I wrong and not afraid to admit it. The atmosphere for the game was done almost perfectly in my opinion it felt like how that sort of area should feel in my mind (never been in a DMZ so can't really say heh). You all keep coming up with these really creative ways to entertain yourselves while you play I'm jealous I just tend to try and do missions since I can't ever come up with fun ways to enjoy the game.
Obey that tiny little voice in the back of your head that wants you to do crazy things for the hell of it. It will get you far.
Alternatively, contemplate action movies and go from there. Which is what has led to things like my helicopter-suicide-attack and sniper-bombardment.
That sounds AWESOME.
The only thing I used the winch for aside from that one mission was an elaborate plot involving carrying a civvie car into a place with what a guide said was heavy anti-air so I could slip in, drop it, bag the card and drive down the mountain with my disguise.
...It turned out the heavy anti-air was just the card, alone, with an anti-air rawket lawnchair. And there was no safe place to drive OFF the mountain either.
But yeah, due to the awkward camera angle, I never succesfully used the winch.
I'd cover that base in them.
...then call in a fuel air bomb.
PS2 would always freeze up for a few seconds when all that shit started blowing up.
And promptly explode.
